Amazon is investing $1.4 billion to expand into 6 cities outside of Seattle, and it may be a sign that tech companies are reconsidering the future of the office (AMZN)

Amazon announced that it's expanding its physical offices in six "tech hubs" around the country and adding 3,500 jobs. The expanded offices will be based in Dallas, Detroit, Denver, New York, Phoenix, and San Diego. Amazon is investing $1.4 billion in building out those offices, it said.  Amazon's office hubs follow a larger trend of tech companies reconsidering how and when employees return to the office. Facebook and Google aren't requiring workers to return until next summer, while Twitter ...

Amazon will add 3,500 tech and corporate jobs across six US cities

Amazon today announced an upcoming hiring spree set to bring 3,500 jobs to a half-dozen U.S. cities. The news is, of course, particularly notable amid a pandemic that has cause many industries to freeze hiring, while unemployment claims have soared across the country. It also finds the company doing that hiring in cities — many of which have seen citizens looking to move to less densely populated areas. While many businesses have suffered the knock-on effects of COVID-19-related lockdowns, ho...

The Lord and Taylor building in midtown Manhattan, owned by a real estate fund linked to WeWork, is a symbol of the co-working company's grand ambitions gone unchecked. WeWork planned to lease the space and turn it into a global headquarters.  The landmark property is still under construction, but as WeWork slashes thousands of jobs – eliminating the need for a ne...

Walmart's newest virtual mall addition reveals a hidden strategy to attack one of Amazon's biggest strengths (WMT, AMZN)

Walmart has added Fanatics, an online sports apparel shop, to its list of stores in its online virtual mall. It's the latest move in the retailer's plan to increase the number of items it sells on Walmart.com. Walmart needs to boost its selection to compete with legacy e-commerce players like Amazon and Ebay, which host a much wider selection. If it can't become "the everything store," Walmart wants to become known as a store that sells everything.  The retailer is in a hurry to add more sele...

Now, the company is making good on that purchase, as Moosejaw is the first of Walmart’s acquired brands to arrive on Walmart.com. By Adam Bernstein, The Washington Post Robin Leach, a British-born TV personality and unapologetic practitioner of “Jacuzzi journalism” whose long-running show “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” ogled the world’s most conspicuous consumers consuming conspicuously, died Aug. 23 at a hospital in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Brands to Watch in 2018 Midyear Update

How are brands such as Amazon, Facebook, Tesla, and Salesforce doing?  These brands were among those I had flagged last December as “Brands to Watch in 2018,” my most popular post of last year.  Given that a very eventful six months have passed, it seems appropriate to provide updates on how these “brands to watch” have been faring.  In this post, I take a look at these and several other brands that have made the news in recent months: AMAZON.  Keeping track of the number and scale of developm...

If You’re Short & Style-Minded, You’ll Love These

If You’re Short & Style-Minded, You’ll Love These It’s tough to be short, even if your BFF is a tailor. All those super-cute pieces the mannequins wear are designed for leggy ladies, while the petite racks are stocked with sad, frumpy seconds. It’s as if the fashion industry thinks all short women are aging receptionists from the 1980s. But I’ll say it again: thank goodness for online shopping. While the stores in the mall may not carry a decent selection of petite fashion, you can still get you...
