Dizzy – “Twist”

Comprising brothers Charlie, Alex, and Mackenzie Spencer plus neighborhood friend Katie Munshaw, Dizzy are a band we've been keeping tabs on. Their music has drawn comparisons to that of Lorde's Pure Heroine in terms of its aesthetic and the emotional space it navigates. We loved their artful rendition of dream pop on tracks like "More »

20 Coachella festival performances we’ll never forget

The 20th anniversary of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is almost upon us and our reporters have logged many, many miles on the grass (and to and from the parking lots) at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. This year’s festival happens April 12-14 and April 19-21 and the lineup includes headliners Childish Gambino (who we saw back in the day in 2012), Tame Impala (who played the fest in 2011, 2013 and 2015) and Ariana Grande, who makes her debut as something more than a surprise guest. ...

This Guy Is The Hottest Songwriter In Pop

Many songs on Juice WRLD's Death Race For Love, the reigning #1 album in America, made me laugh out loud. A track called "HeMotions," for instance, is already hilarious coming from an emo-informed SoundCloud sing-rapper who made his name on misogynistic self-pity, even before you even factor in lyrics like these: "Going through … More »

Historical lesbian destinations

Due to the vast majority of LGBTQ historical records and writings focusing on the relationships between gay men, there isn’t much about the history of lesbianism in the more distant past. However, just in the past three centuries, along with the emergence of feminism and women’s rights, came the need to bring the lesbian voice into the mainstream. The easiest way to pay homage to the lesbian culture that helped shape history as you know it? Simply pay a visit to one of the many destinations a...

Women dominated in Grammys nominations, but will they win?

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Janelle Monae remembers being frustrated at last year’s Grammy Awards, where male acts dominated in nominations and the only woman competing for the night’s top award, Lorde, didn’t get a chance to perform onstage. But this year, Monae is looking forward to the show, where women are now leading in nominations […]

The Grammys Are Bowing Down To Women & It's About Time

The last Grammy Awards were a true shit show for the representation of women. The one woman nominated for Album of the Year, Lorde, was not invited to perform on the show — but all the men nominated were. Only one woman, Alessia Cara, won an award during the actual telecast. Women were shut out as songwriters, with no Record of the Year nominations, and in Producer of the Year, not only were there no nominations for women, but no woman had been nominated since 2004 (!!!). When questioned about ...

Alessia Cara May Not Be The Best New Artist, But She’s Also Not Half Bad

How Postmodern Jukebox found success mashing up jazz and ragtime with modern rock and pop

The popular phrase may be “everything old is new again.” For Scott Bradlee, it might read everything new is old again. That essentially is what he does as the founder and lead arranger in Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox, an ensemble created with the idea of taking modern pop hits and playing them in ragtime, vintage jazz and other retro musical styles. “When I was in high school, I was getting into really like early jazz, stuff like ragtime and New Orleans music and things like that,” he said...
