Dodgers’ Hyun-Jin Ryu could become an All-Star at opportune time

PITTSBURGH — Hyun-Jin Ryu is setting himself up for a much more complicated decision next winter. Following the 2018 season, Ryu became a free agent. But the left-hander never made it to the open market. When the Dodgers made him the qualifying offer – securing draft-pick compensation if he signed with another team – Ryu did what only a small percentage of players in that position have done. He took it. “To be honest, it wasn’t a difficult decision,” Ryu said through his interpreter. “Knowing th...

Evolved Dodgers’ clubhouse allows young players to ‘be who you are’

When Justin Turner was about to make the big leagues for the first time with the Baltimore Orioles in 2009, his locker in spring training was next to the locker of Ty Wigginton, a savvy 31-year-old veteran at the time. “He kind of took me under his wing and told me some horror stories from when he came up (about how rookies were treated),” Turner recalls now. “How he wasn’t allowed to sit in a seat on the bus. He had to sit on the ice chest and pass out drinks to everyone. Stuff like that. But h...

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Avisail Garcia and Kevin Kiermaier each hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to power the Tampa Bay Rays past the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-1 on Wednesday night. Dodgers’ Kenley Jansen reconnects with his 2017 self via Facebook

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Who says no good ever comes from time spent on social media? Kenley Jansen was bored in his hotel room during the Dodgers’ off-day on Monday when he noticed a video had popped up on his Facebook feed from two years ago. It was from the “immaculate inning” he threw against the Miami Marlins on May 18, 2017 – Jansen struck out the side in the ninth inning on nine pitches. Good times. But what struck Jansen about the Facebook memory was how different he looked. In the Dodgers...

Willians Astudillo, the Twins’ talented ‘turtle,’ is making contact look cool again

ANAHEIM – One Willians Astudillo story goes like this: during batting practice one afternoon, Astudillo was hitting everything. Over his head, a foot outside, buried in the dirt – no matter how wild the pitch, Astudillo was determined to make contact. Rudy Hernandez, the Minnesota Twins’ batting practice pitcher, tried to throw a ball where no mortal could touch it: directly behind Astudillo’s back. The 5-foot-9 dynamo chopped down at the pitch like a tomahawk as his body spun away from home pla...

Julio Urias rejoins Dodgers after reinstatement by MLB, addresses team

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Julio Urias returned to the active roster Tuesday, joining the Dodgers in Tampa Bay and expressing eagerness to get back to playing baseball but otherwise saying little about the incident that landed him on administrative leave. “I’m cooperating with Major League Baseball. They’re the ones in charge of the investigation,” Urias said through an interpreter. “I’m just happy to be back in here and grateful my teammates welcomed me back in the clubhouse.” He responded with ver...

Dodgers’ Urías reinstated from administrative leave

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías was reinstated Tuesday from administrative leave by Major League Baseball. MLB reinstates Julio Urias, Dodgers add him to active roster

TAMPA — Major League Baseball official reinstated Julio Urias from administrative leave Tuesday and the Dodgers added him to their active roster. However, MLB acknowledged “the investigation into a matter governed by the Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy continues.” It is still possible Urias could be suspended or disciplined by MLB when that investigation concludes. Urias was placed on seven-day administrative leave a week ago after he was arrested and briefly jaile...

MLB expected to reinstate Dodgers’ Julio Urias from administrative leave

Major League Baseball has completed its investigation and Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias will be released from administrative leave on Tuesday, a source confirmed to the Southern California News Group. The left-hander will be eligible to return to the team’s active roster. It is unclear until the move becomes official whether Urias will be subject to discipline of any kind. If he does return to the Dodgers’ active roster, that appears to be a clear indication no suspension will result from the inci...

Dodgers’ Andrew Friedman hasn’t let a bigger payroll change his winning formula

The first time it really hit Andrew Friedman that he wasn’t in Tampa anymore was Opening Day in 2015. “Jimmy Rollins hits that big three-run home run and 50,000 people erupted,” Friedman recalls now. “I took a minute and looked around and said, ‘Wait a minute – I’m happy and 50,000 people are happy?’ because I was used to being at Fenway or Yankee Stadium and when those crowds were happy I was not. So it definitely set in.” There were other, quieter moments after Friedman “kind of took my profes...

Dodgers outfielders largely responsible for better defense this season

CINCINNATI – Those laminated cards the Dodgers outfielders carry in their back pockets must be working. Or maybe it has something to do with the outfielders themselves. What can’t be disputed is the fact that the Dodgers’ team defense has improved in 2019. After being a middling (or worse) team defensively last season, they rank first or second in most of the advanced defensive metrics this season, vying with the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox for the top spot in overall defense (second to t...

Dodgers on wrong end of shutout in Cincinnati

CINCINNATI — The Dodgers were shut out by right-hander Tyler Mahle and three relievers in a 4-0 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday afternoon. No park in the National League has been yielding home runs at a higher rate than Great American Ball Park, and only in Coors Field has it been easier to score runs. But after hitting four home runs Friday night, the Dodgers managed just six hits Saturday, all singles. Coming into the game, it had been Dodgers pitchers putting up the zeroes. But a 24-i...

Dodgers showing no signs of a World Series hangover

CINCINNATI — One year ago, the Dodgers were just starting to dig themselves out. When they woke up last May 17, they were 10 games under .500 (16-26) and eight games out in the National League West. They won that night and kept on winning – nine of their next 11. After that cold start, they won at a .628 rate (76-45), right through a Game 163 victory over the Colorado Rockies to claim their sixth consecutive division title. Their second season as defending NL champs has had a different look. The...

Angels block Dodgers' attempt at doing something cool

There's an interesting story in the Los Angeles Times today about a neat idea the Dodgers had a couple of years ago. The plan would cost taxpayers nothing as the Dodgers and the existing landowners would foot the entire bill. It would not add to traffic, parking or zoning problems in the area — L.A.'s mayor said it would have less impact than if a Costco opened on the same property.

Safety first, fashion second: why more hitters than ever are wearing extended ear flaps

LOS ANGELES — Two blue batting helmets stamped with a number-31 decal sat in the Dodgers’ dugout on the afternoon of April 23, 2017. One helmet had the traditional ear flap on the right side. This was the helmet Joc Pederson wore whenever he faced a right-handed pitcher. The other featured an extended cheek protector – the “C flap” – which Pederson wore whenever he faced a left-handed pitcher. On this afternoon, Pederson strained his groin running out a ground ball at Chase Field. The next day, ...
