FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) — Hall of Fame manager Tom Lasorda’s condition has improved while he remains hospitalized in Southern California. Los Angeles Dodgers spokesman Steve Brener said Tuesday that the team’s 93-year-old former manager has been taking online calls from former players and coaches at a hospital in Orange County. Lasorda lives in Fullerton. The team first announced he was hospitalized on Nov. 15. Lasorda attended the team’s Game 6 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Oct. 27 in Texas...

Dodgers Q&A: On Arenado, Estevez, Lindor, Turner, and more

Editor’s note: This is the Tuesday, Nov. 24 edition of the Inside the Dodgers newsletter from reporter J.P. Hoornstra. To receive the newsletter in your inbox, sign up here. The off-season news hit a natural, expected lull over the weekend. I figured it was time for my first question-and-answer newsletter since … 2018? (I’ve seriously lost track of time. Send help.) When I solicited questions on Twitter Monday, I quickly realized the answers were better served across multiple newsletters. Cons...

Dodgers add four to 40-man roster in advance of Rule 5 draft

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers added four minor-leaguers to their 40-man roster before Friday’s deadline, protecting them from next month’s Rule 5 draft. The group included right-handed pitchers Edwin Uceta, Gerardo Carrillo and Andre Jackson as well as outfielder Zach Reks. The moves mean the Dodgers currently have 36 players on their 40-man roster. Reks, 27, is the most advanced of the four prospects. A 10th-round draft pick out of the University of Kentucky in 2017, Reks has hit a combined .300 wi...

Dodgers will affiliate with Spokane, and not Great Lakes or Ogden, in 2021

The Dodgers will gain a minor league affiliate in Spokane, Washington for the 2021 season, while losing affiliations with minor league teams in Ogden, Utah and Midland, Michigan, the Southern California News Group has learned. The number of affiliated minor-league teams is shrinking from 160 to 120, a sweeping consolidation MLB initiated behind the scenes more than a year ago. Each organization will be left with four affiliates – Triple-A, Double-A, High-A and Low-A – in addition to two teams ba...

Dodgers’ minor league affiliate shuffle will bring major changes in 2021

As part of sweeping changes coming to minor league baseball in 2021, the Dodgers will no longer be affiliated with teams in Ogden, Utah and Midland, Michigan, the Southern California News Group has learned. The number of affiliated minor-league teams is shrinking from 160 to 120, a consolidation initiated behind the scenes more than a year ago. Each organization will be left with four affiliates – Triple-A, Double-A, High-A and Low-A – in addition to two teams based out of their minor-league com...

Perry Minasian, Kim Ng offer MLB a familiar yet different breed of executive

It’s an interesting time to be a general manager of a Major League Baseball team. The Angels’ Perry Minasian and the Marlins’ Kim Ng have been working in MLB in some capacity since the 1990s. They were collecting paychecks from clubs long before Chaim Bloom, the Red Sox’s top executive, wrote his first article for Baseball Prospectus in 1997, or James Click did the same in 2003. Those four – Minasian, Ng, Click and Bloom – were the last four people to be hired to helm a baseball operations depar...

Dodgers implement layoffs after financial losses of 2020

A World Series championship could not insulate the Dodgers from the financial realities of 2020. The Dodgers instituted layoffs “throughout the organization” on Wednesday, joining a number of MLB teams in making cuts as a result of the revenue losses suffered during the coronavirus pandemic. The job cuts are believed to be at least 40 to 50 in all, from virtually every department. The Dodgers had already declined to renew the contracts of a handful of scouts when they expired at the end of Septe...

How minor league contraction will (probably) affect the Dodgers

Editor’s note: This is the Wednesday, Nov. 18 edition of the Inside the Dodgers newsletter from reporter J.P. Hoornstra. To receive the newsletter in your inbox, sign up here. There’s a debate to be had about whether or not the Dodgers’ eight-year run of National League West titles constituted a dynasty before they won a World Series, if it constitutes a dynasty now, or if another championship is required before anyone mentions the “D-word.” It’s a good debate for sports-talk radio or Twitter ...

Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger undergoes surgery on right shoulder

Dodgers outfielder Cody Bellinger underwent surgery Tuesday to stabilize the right shoulder that he dislocated during Game 7 of the National League Championship Series last month. Bellinger has had a history of popping the shoulder out of its socket. He did it on a diving defensive play at first base in May of 2019, prompting his move to the outfield as his primary position. Surgery was considered following that season but Bellinger opted for a program of strengthening exercises. He did it again...

Dodgers’ Andrew Friedman named MLB Executive of the Year

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman has been named MLB’s Executive of the Year for 2020 in a vote of his peers. White Sox GM Rick Hahn and Rays GM Erik Neander finished second and third in the voting by all 30 MLB teams conducted before the start of the postseason. Friedman was recognized for putting together the team that produced the best record in baseball (43-17) and extended the Dodgers’ streak of NL West division titles to eight despite the challenges of playing during...

Former Dodgers manager and Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda hospitalized in intensive care

Dodgers Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda has been hospitalized in Orange County and is intensive care. The team acknowledged Lasorda’s situation in a release Sunday morning, Nov. 15. No specifics were given about Lasorda’s health, but the team did say the 93-year-old former manager was “resting comfortably.” Lasorda lives in Fullerton. He did travel to Texas for Game 6 of the World Series on Oct. 27 when the Dodgers won their first championship since the Lasorda-led team in 1988. Lasorda has a histor...

Marlins hire former Dodgers exec Kim Ng as MLB’s first female GM

MIAMI — Kim Ng became the highest-ranking woman in baseball operations in the major leagues when she was hired Friday as general manager of the Miami Marlins. Ng is believed to be the first female general manager for a men’s team in a major professional sport in North America, the Marlins said. She broke into Major League Baseball as an intern and has 21 years of experience in the front offices of the Chicago White Sox (1990-96), New York Yankees (1998-2001) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2002-11). Alexander: There was a case for Mookie Betts as NL MVP

The numbers made the strongest case, obviously. The voting for the National League Most Valuable Player award, announced Thursday afternoon, went about the way most people expected, and it was pretty much a runaway. Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman, the pride of El Modena High in Orange, received 28 of the 30 first-place votes and won easily, denying Mookie Betts the opportunity to be the only player besides Frank Robinson to win the MVP in both leagues. And while we hate to keep goi...

Freddie Freeman wins NL MVP; Dodgers’ Mookie Betts finishes second

With the coronavirus impacting everyone in the country on one level or another, anyone who can overcome it deserves an award. Freddie Freeman got his. The Atlanta Braves first baseman was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player for 2020 on Thursday, receiving 28 of the 30 first-place votes from members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts, who was the 2018 AL MVP while with the Boston Red Sox, got the other two first-place votes plus 21 second...

Hoornstra: In defense of a Yu Darvish-less Cy Young Award ballot

Back in July, I asked Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler what it would mean to win a Cy Young Award after a 60-game season. He said it didn’t matter. “Individual stuff, more than normal, takes a back seat this year,” he said. It’s not as if Buehler didn’t have skin in the game. Two oddsmakers emailed me their handicaps of the NL Cy Young race before the season began. One pegged Buehler third, the other fourth. He was a legitimate candidate to win the award given annually to the best pitcher in each ...

On free agency, and what the off-season holds for the Dodgers

Editor’s note: This is the Monday, Nov. 9 edition of the Inside the Dodgers newsletter from reporter J.P. Hoornstra. To receive the newsletter in your inbox, sign up here. As always happens around this time of year, I’m trying to keep an eye on the headlines around MLB, checking in with people around the game, and trying to see where the Dodgers fit in to the bigger off-season picture. This off-season promises to be different, and not in a good way for free agents. I wrote last week about how ...

LA County reports third straight day of 2,000-plus new coronavirus cases

Reporting a daunting third straight day of more than 2,000 new coronavirus cases, Los Angeles County health officials again pleaded with residents to avoid large gatherings and take “Safer at Home” guidelines aimed at slowing the virus spread seriously. Officials announced 15 new deaths and 2,418 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, Nov. 7, the numbers topping Friday’s total and continuing to hover around levels the county hadn’t seen since summer. The number of people hospitalized with the virus ...

Dodgers coach George Lombard leaves for job with Tigers

The Dodgers have a vacancy on their coaching staff. George Lombard has left the team to become bench coach for the Detroit Tigers under their newly hired manager, A.J. Hinch. Lombard served as the Dodgers’ first-base coach for five seasons under manager Dave Roberts and also worked with defensive positioning in the outfield as well as baserunning. Lombard’s departure leaves bench coach Bob Geren and bullpen coach Josh Bard – who left for two seasons with the New York Yankees – as the only member...

Major League Baseball concluded its investigation of Justin Turner’s behavior following his positive coronavirus test during the Dodgers’ World Series-clinching Game 6 victory and issued no discipline. Turner, who is a free agent, issued a statement during which he says he was “blindsided” by the news of his positive COVID-19 test late in the game. “I will not make excuses for my conduct, but I will describe my state of mind,” Turner wrote. “Winning the World Series was my lifelong dream and the...

In celebration of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ World Series victory, this East Los Angeles duplex has been turned into a big blue art gallery.
