Ténéré Paco Rabanne: Gone To A Beautiful Sunset

In one of his books, Luca Turin called Paco Rabanne a perfume house that is responsive and even predicts changes in perfumery fashion, releasing bestsellers to please the public. The story of Ténéré Paco Rabanne, launched in 1988 and almost forgotten already, shows that the Spanish brand has had setbacks. The cologne invited men to discover new and unexplored territories, to go into the blazin... Read full article: Ténéré Paco Rabanne: Gone To A Beautiful Sunset from Fragrantica Perfumes and Co...

Tocade Rochas: Quiet, Happy Days

Tocade Rochas is famous for its fancy bottles with colorful plastic stoppers that look like a woman in a Vietnamese hat or Chinese fireworks. Far from glamour and luxury, the Serge Mansau bottles once kept me from trying the fragrance - the more pleasant it was to smell it now, after an interview with its creator Maurice Roucel, after a five-star review by Luca Turin, and after numerous reviews by... I'm re-reading The Emperor of Scent: A True Story of Perfume and Obsession

I'm re-reading The Emperor of Scent, by Chandler Burr. It's a non-fiction book about a guy named Luca Turin who is obsessed with odors, specifically, perfume fragrances. Turin is a biophysicist who wrote a best-selling book that reviewed hundreds of perfumes, in the same way a wine reviewer would write about wine. He believes that the odor of a substance has to do with the way it vibrates on a molecular level. Our noses, he says, contain the equivalent of a scanning electron microscope. This fli...

Perfumes: The Guide 2018 by Luca Turin and Tanya Sanchez

The 27th of June 2018 was made a bit brighter and more smelling with just one tweet from Luca Turin who reported about the publication we've been awaiting for years. I remember that he told me at Esxence that they were thinking about a new guide that will be devoted to the niche and indie segment of the perfume industry – and now the book is ready. The Ebook is launching first, and the... Read full article: Perfumes: The Guide 2018 by Luca Turin and Tanya Sanchez from Fragrantica Perfum...

What's that smell? A controversial theory of olfaction deemed implausible

Eric Block, University at Albany, State University of New York Humans can discriminate tens of thousands of odors. While we may take our sense of smell for granted, it adds immeasurably to our quality of life: the aroma of freshly brewed coffee; the invigorating smell of an ocean breeze or a field of wildflowers; the fragrance of a lover or the natural smell of a baby. Our olfactory sense also warns us when milk turns rancid, when a baby's diaper needs changing and when there's a gas leak. In...

New evidence for the vibration theory of smell

(Phys.org)—The predictive power and galvanizing influence that theoretical models routinely enjoy in physics is only rarely replicated in biology. Lord Raleigh's theory of sound perception, Francis Crick's sequence and adapter hypotheses, and Hodgkin and Huxley's model of the electrical dynamics of neurons are a few notable exceptions that have gone on to spawn entire scientific industries. Although it is hard to find comparable mechanistic drama unfolding in our current century, Luca Turin's vi...
