Why dreaming up bedroom scenes for Lucille Ball and his grandfather was ‘weird’ for this novelist

For Darin Strauss, the first glimmer of his novel “The Queen of Tuesday” came to him in a dream, although by morning he was wondering why he’d scribbled the names of Lucille Ball and Poppa Izzy, his late grandfather, on a scrap of paper by his bed. “I wrote down Lucille Ball, but didn’t really know anything about her except I watched her on TV as a kid and I thought she was really funny,” Strauss says. “As such, she was so cool and so interesting. “And then I very quickly found out about this pa...

The two rom-coms that inspired Geraldine Viswanathan’s ‘Broken Hearts Gallery’ performance

Geraldine Viswanathan fell in love when she read the screenplay for “The Broken Hearts Gallery.” Not with Max or Nick, the male love interests in the romantic comedy the Australian actress had been offered, but with Lucy Gulliver, the character she’d play. “I just wanted to be her/be her best friend,” Viswanathan says. “I thought she was just so unapologetically herself. “And she wears her heart on her sleeve, and that’s a really brave thing to do, and inspires the people around her to be their ...

100% Whole Grain - 80% rye and 20% Wheat. Submitted by dabrownman on September 7, 2020 - 8:29am. It has been a while since I made a loaf of bread.  Covid and health issues have just about made life as horrible and boring as can be among other things.  At least I can still drink a glass of wine a day:-) Lucy has really slowed down since she turned 17.  I had to make a ramp for her to get up on the bed and her hind quarters don't work as well as they used to - but she is hanging...

‘I’m Thinking of Ending Things’ Review: Charlie Kaufman’s Long, Strange Trip is a Surreal Masterwork

“I’m thinking of ending things.” So thinks a young woman (Jessie Buckley) as she sets off for a road trip with her boyfriend Jake (Jesse Plemons) to meet Jake’s parents. The young couple has been dating for about six weeks, and there’s a spark between them – albeit an awkward one. But as the car plods on, the snow drifts down, and the wiper blades hypnotically cut back and forth, the young woman can’t shake that thought, lodged in her brain like song lyrics, or a parasite. “I’m thinking of endi...

Comment on raspberry crumble tart bars by Lucy

Am on the fence with this one. Used ripe, sweet homegrown rasps and somehow it was still too sharp. I sprinkled some golden caster sugar on the crumble in the end which helped a bit. The crumble element was lovely and we really liked the nuts. The crust came out crisp but had gone soggy the following day, as had the topping- which I guess is to be expected as eventually the fruit juice seeps through. So in summary I would add a little more sugar and only make if I knew it would all go on the day...

But as time goes on, fewer and fewer people know about the history of these two television trailblazers. Thankfully, comedian Amy Poehler will tell their story in a new documentary simply titled Lucy & Desi. Deadline has wor...

Comment on rice-stuffed tomatoes by Lucy

I used to love stuffed tomatoes when I lived in Italy. They were a summer specialty. However they were served a room temperature, overflowing with rice, so that a serving usually included extra rice on the plate. The rice was never starchy, and there were no extra flavorings added to them. Somehow, as simple as they were, I’ve been unable to duplicate them in the US. I do know that the type of rice you use is all important. Long grain, and therefore starchy rice, doesn’t work. If you have...
