Comment on piri piri chicken by Marea

I made this and it was lovely. Changes I made: I didn’t have a food processor so I just chopped everything really finely. I added an extra glug of olive oil and another splash of red wine vinegar. I roasted it in a convection oven at 425 for 35mins. Didn’t have a meat thermometer so checked that juices ran clear in thick part. Changes for next time: I only added 1 chili and should have added 2-3 more (because it was all just chopped it’s hard to check spiciness). I forgot to set some aside when...

Watch The Black Madonna DJ live from … inside a video game

Algorithmic selection, soulless streaming music, DJ players that tell you what to play next and then do it for you… let’s give you an alternative, and much more fun and futuristic future. Let’s watch The Black Madonna DJ from inside a video game. This is some reality-bending action here. The Black Madonna, an actual human, played an actual DJ set in an actual club, as that entire club set was transformed into a virtual rendition. That in turn was then streamed as a promotion via Resident Advis...

Summer in the Italian Language: Going to the Beach

La spiaggia The beach The beaches of Sonoma County on the northern California coast, practically in my backyard (praticamente dietro casa), are beautiful, dramatic--and usually windy and cold. As much as I love walking and running on them, none can compare with una spiaggia italiana. If I could, I'd spend the entire summer on one. Over the years I've discovered that  going to the beach (andare in spiaggia) in Italy requires a specialized vocabulary.  Start with sunglasses (gli occhiali da sol...

Pro-Assad forces shell Turkish positions in Syria: pro-Assad commander

Pro-Syrian government forces shelled Turkish positions in northern Syria on Wednesday in response to a Turkish air strike that killed five of their fighters, a pro-government commander said. The Shi'ite militia fighters used artillery to target the Turkish positions in the town of Marea, north of Aleppo, the commander told Reuters. Pro-government forces have sided with the YPG against Turkey in Afrin.

Dinner For One: What It's Like To Be A Widow In Your 30s

Nights are the most brutal. For most parents, it’s known as the witching hour, those endless minutes between dinner and bedtime when kids morph from moppets to monsters, mutating into miniature unhinged dictators. For me, the strain starts much earlier. At roughly 4 p.m. That’s when I start to plan the menu for supper, and trust me when I say that there’s nothing quite as disheartening as eating every meal alone. Sure, my son, now 6, will share the table because I believe in family meals, but it...

Summer in the Italian Language: Life's a Beach!

La spiaggia The Beach Doran Beach, practically in my backyard (praticamente dietro casa), curves from the northern California coast to the harbor entrance of Bodega Bay and beyond to the wind-blown cliff known as “Bodega Head.” As much as I love walking and running on our hometown beach, it doesn’t compare with una spiaggia italiana. The chilly water is too cold for a swim (una nuotata), even in the summer. The sea can be rough (mosso), with rip-tides and strong currents. And there are none of t...

The Black Madonna, shesaid.so talk role models, co-conspirators

Kentucky-born artist The Black Madonna this month joined Romanian Andreea Magdalina, founder of all-female network shesaidso.so for GROOVE. The message is as simple as taking women seriously – and what can be done to change things when it doesn’t happen. It’s worth sharing that conversation – and please, listen to its entirety – for a couple of reasons. First, I think we’re obligated to keep sharing this conversation and ones like it so long as it keeps prompting negative and defensive reacti...

Erdogan's Waterloo: Turkey Invades and Occupies Syria

The Obama administration has assiduously avoided U.S. military engagement in Syria. President Barack Obama is wary of the pottery barn rule: "You break it, you own it." Supporting Turkey's invasion and occupation of Syria would be a strategic mistake, making the United States a protagonist in Syria's civil war. Vice President Joe Biden went to Ankara last week on a mission to repair U.S.-Turkey relations. Upon arrival, Biden learned that Turkish Special Forces, tanks, and fighters with the Free ...

Erdogan is in Syria With a Green Light from the US and Iran

The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, did another about-face following the failed coup against him. He has since re-defined Turkey's role in Syria with a nationalist-authoritarian priority, while reneging on some previous accords with the Gulf countries and the US-led coalition in Syria. Erdogan has placed the containment of Kurdish expansion at the top of his list of priorities, complete with an understanding with Iran on disallowing the further evolution if not the full suppression if n...

Thousands of civilians have fled an offensive by the Islamic State group against non-jihadist rebels in northern Syria into territory controlled by a US-backed Kurdish-led alliance, a monitor said on Sunday. The offensive against the towns of Marea and Azaz threatens to overrun the last swathe of territory in the east of Aleppo province held by non-jihadist rebels and bring IS to the doorstep of the Kurds' Afrin enclave.
