Comment on russian honey cake by Maria

In reply to Elizabeth. I made it when I was in high school back in USSR. The reason for making it is because even with empty shelves you could find all the ingredients. I never even heard of these spices until I moved to Canada. Our (Russian) cooking doesn’t utilize spices. So these new recipes are not ancestral or original.

Ways To Respond To Spasibo

You probably already know how to thank others in Russian. We discussed this topic earlier in this blog. But it’s equally important to know what to answer when someone thanks you. Today we will learn how to respond to words of gratitude. Y ou A re W elcome First of all, I’ll start with the most known expression: Пож а́ луйста! – Y ou’re welcome! Undoubtedly, this word often scares non-Russian speakers. It is difficult to pronounce [ pa-ZHA-lu y – sta] the first time. But with a little p...

The Games Lizards Play

I did mean evolutionary games played out over long periods of time, where for example, three colored varieties of one lizard species keep cyclically oscillating in their numbers. Why should this happen? The answer lies in the children's game 'rock- paper- scissors', an analogue for understanding evolutionary strategies for reproductive success. This is a really fine essay in The Wire Science by evolutionary biologist Raghavendra Gadagkar on the ecology and evolutionary biology of rock lizards. The Letters of Mozart’s Sister Maria Anna Get Transformed into Music

The talent of an individual may not always run in the family, but we can never discount the possibility of its doing so. This is true even in the case of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, not just one of the best-known composers ever to live, but a byword for deep, innate, and unrepeatable genius. Mozart was composing original music at the age of of four or five, an astonishing fact we know today in part because his older sister witnessed and later attested to it. Known as Nannerl, Maria Anna Moz...

Meghan Markle worked at LA-based Humphrey Yogart; Now British media calls Sherman Oaks shop for scoops

During her much ballyhooed Sunday, March 7 interview with Oprah Winfrey, former actress and current Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle briefly mentioned that as a teen she worked at a froyo shop called Humphrey Yogart.   The quick statement was enough to set off gallons of internet buzz, as well as an avalanche of calls to the shop from British media and curious customers. But the owner of the store didn’t have a scoop. In fact, she didn’t even remember Markle — who worked there in 1994, acco...

Comrade Drakulich – review

Director: Márk Bodzsár Release date: 2019 Contains spoilers Hungary was the source of one of the oldest (and unfortunately lost) vampire films in the form of Drakula Halála and was the birthplace of Bela Lugosi, of course, who gave us the arguably most iconic form of Dracula. From a media point of view Hungary’s legacy in the vampire genre is, with these two things, absolutely secured. Drakulics Elvtárs, as this film is known in Hungary, is a satire that looks at the socialist/soviet era of Hun...
