‘The Bluff’ Will Be a Netflix Pirate Movie Starring Zoe Saldana, Produced by the Russo Brothers

You may have forgotten this, but Zoe Saldana has a small part in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. But now, Saldana is going to lead a pirate movie of her own – and wouldn’t ya know it, it’s also set in the Caribbean. Saldana will star in The Bluff, a movie that Netflix just won in a “hotly contested auction.” The story follows a Caribbean woman whose past comes back to haunt he...

‘Isabella’ Review: The Women Take the Stage in a Surreal Shakespeare Riff [NYFF]

All the world’s a stage, but many of its players are riddled with self-doubt in Matías Piñeiro‘s surreal exploration of female identity through the works of William Shakespeare. Isabella is the Argentinian director’s latest post-modern spin on Shakespeare, following two women who are imperfect reflections of each other as they audition for the part of Isabella in Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure. Measure for Measure is often called one of Shakespeare’s problem plays due to its unclassifiabl...

Cruise ship with COVID-19 patients docks in Cuba

A British cruise ship rejected by Caribbean port officials for weeks docked in Cuba on Wednesday to unload more than 1,000 people on board, including five with confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus. The Braemar arrived in the port of Mariel early in the morning. Passengers leaving the ship were being taken by medical workers in protective gear to Jose Marti International Airport, about 40 miles (65 kilometers) east in the capital, Havana.

Long-range thinking key to managing migrant issues

In 1980, 15,000 Haitians took to boats to come to America. President Jimmy Carter initially welcomed the refugees. The impact on Florida labor markets, however, and the contemporaneous arrival of Cuban refugees (including criminals and insane people) in the Mariel boatlift turned United States public opinion. President Ronald Reagan ordered a new policy. Since American law grants any foreigner who makes it to U.S. territory the right to petition for asylum, the new policy sought to keep Haitians...

Made this the other night for dinner–definitely not too fishy once it was cooked. Used jaggery instead of brown sugar, but will try brown sugar next time. Served it with a peanut slaw. Would make again and again.

Limnisa: Seclusion and Silence – a True Writer’s Retreat

Birdsong and the constant lulling sound of the waves; the taste of freshly baked apple cake and good coffee; the salty tang of the sea, rosemary and jasmine perfume the air… I’ve just returned to Australia from my second trip to the Writer’s Retreat at Limnisa in Greece, owned by Mariel Hacking and Phillip Wooderson. The house is by the shore on the Methana peninsula, with the islands of Aegina and Angistri across the water. It is spacious and airy with five bedrooms, all with sea views. A fully...

Comment on the ‘i want chocolate cake’ cake by Mariel

Deb, I am a fan of Smitten Kitchen and have your newest cookbook. I have enjoyed the recipes although my husband and I find them quite fussy (we find your title misleading). I was convinced by your cake spiel that I, a novice baker, too could make a cake but have been let down twice. I made the spice cake with banana and found it tasteless, is that normal? I tried to make this one today and it burnt to a crisp, even with my oven at the right temperature. I don’t have an oven thermometer, but is ...

Trump Admin Releases Lengthy List Of Strict Rules For Americans Visiting Cuba

WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans who visit Cuba must now avoid hotels, shops, tour companies and other businesses on a lengthy list released Wednesday by the Trump administration as part of a new policy aimed at cracking down on the communist-run island’s government. U.S. travelers will once again be required to go as part of organized tour groups run by U.S. companies, and a representative of the sponsoring group must accompany the travelers. That’s a return to the stricter rules that existed before...

Why ‘Redwall’ Should Be the Next Huge Movie Series

In an ideal world, Hollywood would focus entirely on wholly original films, from low-budget dramas to big-budget action/adventure/science-fiction stories. When the industry does go back to original storytelling, it can often yield major successes; we’re only a couple months removed from the low-budget original horror smash Get Out, released by Universal Pictures. But hoping only gets you so far. Even the briefest look at the summer-movie calendar in 2017 and beyond offers sequels, prequels, rem...

Romantic wedding at a Horticulture Center in Philadelphia: Mariel + Steve

Fun fact about Mariel + Steve: They actually got engaged at their venue-to-be, the Fairmount Park Horticultural Center in Philadelphia. Mariel had the venue on her radar after seeing tons of wedding photos there, so while in the city they decided to take a quick look. They’d been together for six years and had talked about getting married one day, but she totally wasn’t expecting him to pop the question then and there. Luckily, they both loved the space so much they knew it was going to be the ...

Zoe Saldana Has A Mindful Alternative To A New Year's Resolution

Zoe Saldana and her sisters are foregoing traditional New Year’s resolutions. In their most recent YouTube video, the three women describe how they’re planning to take on the new year.  “Instead of a resolution this year we’ve decided to set an intention, picking a word and focusing on that word and letting that word guide you through the year,” Mariel Saldana says in the video.  While a resolution and an intention may sound very similar, Zoe explained to viewers why she and her sisters feel th...

Running in Place: Improving Public Education

Reading, writing, and ‘rithmetic. In popular culture, we have a cheerful image of little Jim and Jane skipping to their suburban elementary school. Cute? Yes. Accurate? Only if Jim and Jane hail from upper-class backgrounds. Compare Jim and Jane, two adorable first-graders from Coldwater Canyon, to Marcus and Mariel, two adorable first-graders from Los Angeles. For Marcus and Mariel, domestic violence, physical violence, and food insecurity pervade their daily lives. On Mariel’s walk to her gang...

On January 18, University of California, Davis economist Giovanni Peri and doctoral candidate Vasil Yasenov published an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal discussing their recent study on the wage and employment disruption created ...

Comment on gingerbread layer cake by Mariel

I am glad to see I am not the only one who is baffled by the stickiness of gingerbread. This year was my first year making true gingerbread cookies. All the stops. And I always roll it out w conf. Sugar or flour, but was hoping to try something easier, like parchment paper. Oh my goodness. I’ve never seen something stick so intently to parchment. I had to take my cake spatula and literally scrap it all off. I ended up going w flour. Pam m Baking spray helped release my cake from my the Bundt p...
