Dragoon Mountains, days 2 and 3

Tuesday, March 2Although the temperature would rise to the mid-60s, there was enough wind to make it feel colder. Just before sunrise I ended up spending the morning reading inside the URRV, the book was riveting and the inside of the URRV was warm in the sun.Around 3:30 PM, I decided to take a drive with Mariko due to the continuing cold winds.  I didn't get very far, I started smelling coolant.  Checked the engine compartment, nothing.  Kept driving and the coolant smell got stronger.  This...

Trips into Safford, fixing a leak, 4-wheeling to the nearby hills avoiding the maddening crowds

Friday, FEB 26The day was spent mostly riding to/from the campsite to the town of Safford, AZ which is located about 37 miles away.  It has most of your regular stores, to include a Walmart, so a better choice than Bowie, AZ which is slightly closer but without many amenities.First trip was to take the broken Sony camera to a a shipping store where they printed out for me the paperwork to be included with the camera, the Fedex label provided by Sony and I paid for a box/packaging for them to sh...

Changing campsites and a camera malfunction.

I decided to displace to a better campsite within the Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area this morning, it's a bit more secluded/isolated and away from the UTV crowd that showed up last night. It was within walking distance of site 11 where I had been so not a big hassle. Not sure if it was the same road runner but one of them showed up at the new campsite, walking around the URRV like he owned the place.  I followed him around and once he was in the light, I activated the zoom on the Sony HX80....gr...

Wind Pumps, a Roadrunner and more dune driving...

An issue-free day as it pertained with Mariko! She and I drove out of the Hot Well Dunes Campground area and meandered northward, eventually finding four wind pumps while exploring trails as we found them. Driving along Tanque Road (Spanish word for Tank) Never did find the tank... Aermotor is still in business it turns out. These things are pricey! Got back to the campsite around 1PM, had a light lunch and just hung out at the campsite listening to podcasts, relaxing and f...

Mariko is a project at times...

A bit of a stressful day in terms of issues that arose with Mariko.First, everything was fine as I drove the 30 miles or so to Safford, AZ where the nearest NAPA store was located.  Well, almost everything was fine, she seemed to be idling at around 1100 rpms where normally it would be between 800-900 rpm.  Hmm.I got there just fine and purchased antifreeze (50/50 mix) and another 5 quart bottle of 10W30 oil.  It didn't take very much to fill up the radiator to the top so being low on coolant i...

Now boondocking in the Hot Well Dunes BLM campground, Arizona

This BLM campground is located roughly halfway between the towns of Safford on the north and Bowie on the south.  I've stayed here before, a little short of a year ago: LINK, leaving when things were starting to be shut down everywhere due to the pandemic. The hot water tubs remain closed due to Covid-19 but camping is once again permitted, at the rate of $3/vehicle per day.  A bargain!  Especially since as a American the Beautiful Pass holder, I only pay half.I even got the same spot as last tim...

A hike up Picacho Peak and more light four-wheeling

Warmest day in quite a while, it was in the high 60s in the late afternoon though quite breezy with gusty winds bringing a bit of wind chill factor.Started walking from my campsite at 9:02 AM and would be standing at the top of the highest point of Picacho Peak 40 minutes later.  Yes, several stops to catch my breath were made on the way up! Near the start of the trail up, you can just see what I called the gateway rock formations upper center. The gateway rock formations, things would g...

A Recycled Roadrunner, some 4-wheeling and finally got the package.

After breakfast, I drove Mariko out towards the Recycled Roadrunner, a roadside attraction located at a rest stop on the I-10 super slab (eastbound side).More info re this attraction here on roadsideamerica.com:  The roadrunner didn't originally stand on the rock....but after it was refurbed, they located it on a rock to discourage the morons who liked to climb aboard for pics. A closeup of the right wing... Now that's a lot of tennis shoes... Neat attraction, the only n...

Visiting the White Sands National Monument with Mariko

Today, the weather was warmer than the last couple of days but still more cloudy than desired, so it was still a brisk experience, walking among the dunes when the sun was hidden by clouds.I'd been to this park before, back in December of 2018, better pictures than the ones taken today here: LINKSo I learned one thing about the "white sands" at this monument.  If you visit after shortly after a snow fall, the sands are still wet if not still around and turns the sand, well, sand colored!  It wa...

Visiting the Missile Garden

That's the nickname given to the White Sands Missile Range's museum's outdoor display of the missiles, rockets and associated equipment, drones, and launchers that have been developed/tested at this range.Last time I'd tried to get into post to take the pictures, the rules still didn't allow me access onto post as I didn't have a military ID card anymore.  Now, as of over a year ago, I now have access to active military posts with my Veterans Health ID card.  So after registering myself and the...

More minor chores on Mariko as the weather cools...

Though the sun did shine through on occasion today, it was mostly overcast with gusty winds making it feel colder than the indicated temperatures.  I don't think it got above 62°F (16.6°C) as a high temperature. The lighting being what it was, I postponed the trail ride from the Sierra Vista Trailhead until a sunnier day.Instead, I drove into town and did some light stimulation of the local economy with trips to Harbor Freight and an O'Reilly's Auto Parts.  It was at this particular O'Reilly's t...

The weather is turning cooler....

Looks like the weather is turning cooler here in southern New Mexico, major storm up north in Colorado apparently, might even bring a little rain here! The day dawned solidly overcast and would be cool and gray most of the day.I spent the morning doing chores on Mariko, basically ensuring all the spark plugs were gapped at .035" per the Samurai Guru I met in Elephant Butte.  The other chores were touching up the black paint parts, mainly the bumpers, where rocks had pitted the paint and rust sho...

Testing the Jack Extension and Taking Mariko's Top Off

A pretty lazy morning today, starting with a shot of the sun as it crested over one of the Needles: Really didn't do much, nor felt the need to do so, just relaxed and read....enjoying the warm sun which made the morning temperatures feel warmer than they actually were.  The lack of wind probably helped with that as well. I did get around to testing the viability of the 6" Jack Extension I'd purchased from SafeJack to extend the reach of the 6 Ton Bottle Jack I got from Amazon to go with i...

Lazy Last Day at the Monticello Road BLM area.

Didn't really get much done in the morning, was content to just sit and listen to my current e-book and putter around the URRV and the Sammy.I did pull the plugs on Mariko and the color of the plugs look good now.  I had thought they were too white or lean before but now they're a faint caramel color so things should be good with them.I did go for one last drive in the northern trails of the Elephant Butte State Park, checking out trails I'd not wandered down before....nothing earthshaking foun...

I meet a Samurai Guru...

Quite the eventful day today.I'd driven down to the City of Elephant Butte to retrieve a package sent to me by my loving wife Martha.  It had the TPMS sensors for the Sammy so I know all is OK when towing her with the URRV. At the front entrance to the T or C Municipal Airport Package retrieved, I went to the Autozone in Truth or Consequences and what did I spy in the parking lot but another Suzuki Samurai!  I parked next to it and its owner came out to chat.  Mike W. works at Autozone and is...

A tool run, some light off-roading to the foothills, and a phone drop!

This morning's task was to replace the gear oil in Mariko's Transfer Case with new 80W90 oil.  Why?  I'd found the oil in the transfer case contaminated with water last month.  I had changed it out then, and this change was to ensure no water remained.I found I was missing the 24mm socket I'd used in my garage.  So before I could do the swap, I drove into T or C and the Autozone Auto Parts store there.  Before I got to the store though, I stopped Mariko at nearby buildings to take pictures of t...

Ridge Running with Mariko

A cloudless sunrise this morning but I took this picture anyways, I liked the glowing color. I spent a couple of hours wiping off the oily dirt and grime that had accumulated behind Mariko's engine and on top of the transmission's bell housing.  Samurai's apparently are known to leak from the o-ring located at the base of the distributor where it mates to the engine.I also discovered, to my chagrin, that Suzuki had left some sharp edges in the vicinity of the distributor and transmission bell ...

Mariko Tasks, RV Vent repair and a brisk ride with Yagi

Sunny but cool today, with a high only in the mid-60s....the steady wind made it seem much cooler. After some more looking at the fuel pump and ruminating over the problem overnight, it finally occurred to me to forego using the existing mount point on the floorboard of the Sammy.Instead, I secured the metal clamp that encircles the pump onto the cable sheath used by the parking brake!  Much quieter now, I can still hear it (just not as loud) when I turn the ignition to ON, can barely hear it wi...

La Jornada del Muerto, Spaceport America and meandering the north side of Elephant Butte State Park

Drove into Truth or Consequences this morning after breakfast to pick up a rubber bumper to try and isolate the new fuel pump and perhaps ameliorate it's tapping sound.  I tanked up Mariko and determined 21.7 MPG with a mix of offroad and pavement driving. Geronimo portrait on the side of a building....there's a museum I might check out another day. As I was in town, I decided to check out La Jornada del Muerto or Dead Man's Journey.  A stretch of road that had been part of the Camino Real o...

Elephant Butte, errands and more off-road meandering

In other posts regarding Elephant Butte, I'd posted pictures of the rock formations I thought had been the inspiration for such a name.  I was wrong all the previous times. This morning, I was perusing a Garmin map and lo and behold, it showed a small rock formation near the dam that forms the Elephant Butte Reservoir! So after breakfast, I headed on down to Elephant Butte, the town, and eventually found the spot shown on the map.  I must say two things.  First, maybe I see the elephant's head bu...

Exploring old and new locations north of Truth or Consequences

Pretty nice day today, presaged by a pretty nice sunrise: About mid-morning, I headed out driving Mariko, the '87 Suzuki Samurai to go check out locations I'd been to before on motorcycles and also range further into the southern boundary of the Cibola National Forest.First was a drive to Mitchell Point and the Stone House located there.  Mitchell Point is located near the Rio Grande which feeds into the Elephant Butte Reservoir to the south.   The interior of the stone house is empty but ...

Boondocking again near Truth or Consequences

I'm back to my preferred boondocking spot about 14 miles north of the New Mexico town of Truth or Consequences.  Yep, a town which renamed itself after a TV Game Show.....google it.Here's a picture of the site I spent the night at, last night: Got here around 1PM after having refilled the propane tank and taken on water in the fresh water tank now that I'm south enough to not worry about freezing temperatures. Most of the other obvious boondocking spots nearby are occupied as well.  I guess thi...

Now in New Mexico

Saturday, JAN 29The sunrise for today wasn't too bad: Penrose Sunrise Found out the hard way that a 40 acre plot of land I was curious about was within the confines of a gated community.  So, no way to get in and wasn't interested in waiting on the offering realtor.  Still, it was a nice drive out with Mariko.Did some errands in the town of Cañon City and managed to get a view of their Castle Rock which seems to lie within one of the prisons' land; so not easy to get closer to it:  In the a...

Boondocking again in Penrose, with Mariko and Yagi

Packed up the URRV this morning and by 10:30 AM I was heading out of my home neighborhood and headed South/Southwest towards Penrose, CO.About three hours later, made it to the Penrose Commons BLM area next to the small town of Penrose off of CO Highway 115, no issues, a couple of stops to check out the towing bits that were pulling Mariko the Suzuki Samurai along as a dingy/toad behind Umarang.I got my preferred spot, and though it did take a few light hammer blows, didn't have any real issues...

Mariko is back and running....finally!

A recap of the last two weeks or so.Last week:I got Mariko back with a new fuel filter, the mechanic thought the old one had caused the issues which had prompted me to return the Sami to them for another look.  Basically, symptoms reflecting haphazard fuel flow. Some maintenance related items were done, such are replacing the spark plugs it came with. These same plugs had been black with soot! You'll note the above old plugs look pretty good in terms of color.  Before, when the engine had be...

Still at home, some snow pics....

Mariko, the '87 Suzuki Samurai 4x4 is still in the shop, this time awaiting the replacement of the factory mechanical fuel pump with an electrical pump to hopefully remedy the ongoing fuel delivery issues.More on the delays in the next posting I hope.It snowed a little bit on the Colorado Front Range, the mountains to the west as usual got a lot more.We got perhaps an inch of the powdery version of the white stuff so I thought I'd kill some time this morning with a ride on Scarlett, my 2014 Ura...

Mariko is back and running....

So, a bit over a week at the shop and I was able to retrieve Mariko yesterday.I had actually been able to retrieve her on Monday, but she acted strangely when I started driving her home from the mechanic's shop.I showed the mechanic the symptoms and he felt it was probably either very low on gas or something with the fuel filter.  So I went back home, riding in Thing Two's truck, very disappointed.Wednesday afternoon, I get a call from the shop and they said the Sami is ready!  Two different pe...

Snow, delays, batteries and a sunset

Sunday, Jan 10Went for a short drive with Mariko, to check out her 4WD in a more extended manner on what I hoped would be snow covered road.  The area I picked did have some snow on the roads, but not much, more muddy than anything else (which is also a good test I guess) as the weather had been warm the last few days.Aside from a slight rattling noise when engaging the clutch before bleeding down the speed, no issues encountered.  The PO told me he'd heard some noise too, especially in Low Rang...

Recovery gear for Mariko and more Maintenance

Since Mariko, my '87 Suzuki Samurai 4x4 weighs almost 2100 lbs dry....it takes a lot more in terms of equipment to do jobs like raising her to change a tire, or straps and shackles to pull her out of loose sand and just gear to do tire repairs!Note: Still, she basically weighs a bit over One Ton!  Light for a four wheeled vehicle!  One Smittybilt 2780 Air compressor rated for 2.54 CFM to air up the tires after leaving terrain where I decided to air down the tires for better traction.  I like th...
