Hot Trade Targets

from Michael Traikos of the National Post, Forget about Mark Stone or Matt Duchene. Heading into this year’s trade deadline, the two names at the top of most lists are Wayne Simmonds and Micheal Ferland. They might not provide the same point production as some of the high-profile rentals available. But they certainly pack a punch. And for teams eyeing a Stanley Cup, that might be more important. Call it the Tom Wilson effect. After the Washington Capitals won the Stanley Cup l...

Senator’s Need to Move Dzingel While He’s Valuable

With the NHL trade deadline approaching, Ottawa Senators forward Ryan Dzingel is quietly becoming an attractive target. The 26-year-old is on the last year of a $1.8 million contract, becoming an unrestricted free agent this summer. Especially if a trade can’t get done with Mark Stone or Matt Duchene, it makes sense to try and move Dzingel, whose market value hasn’t been higher since signing a bridge deal at the end of the 2016-17 season. A bridge deal gives the player opportunity to show ...

Oilers to Apply “Full-Court Press” for a Scoring Forward

There are fans, media, management, and players in Edmonton suggesting the performance of the team right now is simply not good enough. Describing the perception of the club as a group that is often out-worked and out-chanced, that the Oilers are only two points out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference might come as a shock to some. The team has made multiple in-season trades in an effort to squash multi-game losing streaks, they’ve shifted line combinations, and tried to motivate through ...

Ottawa Senators Midseason Report

The recent 5-4 defeat against the Carolina Hurricanes marked the eighth straight loss for the Ottawa Senators, putting them last in the NHL with 35 points (from ‘GARRIOCH GAME REPORT: Senators’ eighth straight loss stings – Ottawa Sun – 1/6/19). Over those eight losses, they’ve been outscored 37-20 and allowing five goals to a Hurricanes team struggling to find the back of the net seemed to be the cherry on top. The Hurricanes rank third-worst this season with 67 goals scored, despite havi...

Predicting Predators’ 2019 Storylines

In a recent article, I covered the top-five storylines for the Nashville Predators from the 2018 calendar year. So now that 2018 is wrapped up and we’re a week into 2019, I want to predict what I think will be the team’s biggest storylines this year. Related: Predators’ 2018-19 Mid-Season Awards That means not only looking at the remainder of the 2018-19 season, but also the 2019 offseason and the first half of the 2019-20 season. Hockey Thoughts In Early 2019

from Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, - Some other teams to keep an eye on: Pittsburgh, as the Penguins have righted the ship, looking to make themselves better; and Minnesota, with the Wild beginning Wednesday five points out of the playoffs. The tough thing for them is that unless they change what they are willing to do, there’s kind of a paralysis. Philadelphia’s been a constant, but now the question is, are they adding or selling? The Rangers will sell, but may decide to wait until clo...

Ducks’ 3 Resolutions for a Successful 2019

It’s that time of year again. The time when some of us resolve to buy a gym membership and only use it a few times. It’s the time when we pledge not to spend on what we can’t afford only to come home a week later with a new wardrobe. It’s resolution time. The same goes for the Anaheim Ducks. They continue to hover above the playoff line but could be more comfortable if they make, and stick to, these three resolutions. Flames Options for Replacing Smith

The 2018-19 Calgary Flames are a terrific scoring team whose most likely fatal weakness remains in net. Namely, they need a more reliable backup or “1B” goalie than 36-year-old Mike Smith. In a 3-1 loss on Dec. 22 against the St. Louis Blues, Smith proved his doubters correct again, letting in two questionable goals. Calgary Flames goalie Mike Smith (Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports) Based on a report last month by Frank Seravalli listing five goalies who could be on the move, there are several ...

Decision Time For The Ottawa Senators

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, Once the Yuletide season has ended, the Ottawa Senators will have to get down to business. When the Senators return from their holiday break Thursday to prepare to face the New York Islanders on Friday – followed with a visit by the Washington Capitals on Saturday – there will be no shortage of focus on the future of a couple of key players. Once the holiday roster freeze lifts on Friday morning the business of hockey will shift back into hig...

Revisiting Doug Armstrong’s Drafts – 2010

The St. Louis Blues is an organization that prides itself on drafting and developing talent, and much of general manager Doug Armstrong’s reputation is built on that very skill. But is perception reality with the Blues and the draft? We’ll be taking a look at the Blues’ drafts since 2010, the year Doug Armstrong took over the front office. Thirteen of the Blues’ 25 active players (including Alex Pietrangelo and Robby Fabbri, who are injured) were Blues’ draftees. But is that an accurate assessme...

Duchene or Stone: Senators’ Long-Term Choices

With Ottawa Senators center Matt Duchene set to return to the lineup Friday against the New Jersey Devils, and with head coach Guy Boucher calling Duchene “ one of the pillars” of the Sens,  it seemed an opportune time to revisit his contract situation, along with one of his teammates. Duchene, who turns 28 in January, is in the final year of a five-year, $30 million contract (cap hit of $6 million), a deal that was inked while he was a member of the Colorado Avalanche. Turris Trade a Year Later – Did the Predators Get Their Guy?

On Dec. 18, the Nashville Predators played the Ottawa Senators on the road, marking a return to Ottawa for long-time Senator Kyle Turris. It was not his first game back in Ottawa since his trade to the Predators last season. That matchup occurred in February of last season, but the most recent game was interesting because he remains a fan favorite in Ottawa and also because he fought former teammate Bobby Ryan. Trading Roman Josi is a Good Idea

From a production standpoint, the Nashville Predators have the league’s best defense, with 89 points by eight players. None of their blueliners exhibits this offensive ability more than captain Roman Josi, who consistently puts up great numbers and is currently second on the team in points. However, he is also somewhat of a polarizing defenseman as people’s opinions of him tend to be on opposite ends of the spectrum. There are many reasons to like him. Chris Tierney scores 2 in Senators' 4-2 win over Red Wings

Mark Stone scored midway through the third period and Chris Tierney's second goal went into an empty net, lifting the Ottawa Senators to a 4-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night. Stone had a goal overturned by video review in the first period, but there was no disputing his go-ahead goal that he sent into the net after the puck was loose in the crease behind goaltender Jimmy Howard. Tierney and Thomas Chabot gave Ottawa a 2-0 lead in the first period.
