Vaping might be better for you than smoking, but e-cigarettes like Juul come with risks of their own (MO)

Research suggests that vaping — or using e-cigarettes like the Juul — is likely better for you than smoking. Smoking involves inhaling burned material. Vaping involves inhaling heated vapor. Still, e-cigs come with health risks of their own. They are especially dangerous for young people, experts say. E-cigs contain nicotine, an addictive drug that in kids and teens appears to blunt emotional control as well as decision-making and impulse-regulation skills. A single Juul pod delivers the same ...

Juul's strategy for success: target children, steadily ramp up nicotine levels

Juul -- now a subsidiary of the company that owns Marlboro -- attained its $12.8B valuation by growing faster than any other vaping company, thanks in large part to the children who bought its products, reversing decades of progress in getting teens off nicotine products while simultaneously monopolizing the market for vaping products Juul's other secret to success was to steadily ramp up the levels of deadly, highly addictive nicotine in its products, being the first to leap from 1-2% nico...

Carcinogens, monopolies, influence-peddling: Juul is a microcosm with everything wrong in the world

Juul just handed out $2 billion in dividends, making 1,500 employees into overnight millionaires; the cash came from Altria-Marlboro's 35%, $12.8 billion buyout of the company -- and everything about the story stinks. As David Dayen from The Intercept explains, the vaping industry has gutted the smoking industry -- and the smoking industry's attempts to catch up with their own offerings have failed miserably. In a world of competitive markets, this would be pretty normal: a disruptive innov...

The company behind Marlboro reportedly aims to bet big on Juul — a move that could make the Silicon Valley e-cig startup more valuable than Airbnb (MO)

Tobacco giant Altria plans to take a 35% stake in Silicon Valley e-cig startup Juul Labs, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. As early as this spring, Wall Street analysts warned that Juul sales were starting to encroach on big tobacco's financial terrain and could negatively impact Altria stocks. Altria's move is strategic: It would give the company a fresh line-up of new nicotine products as traditional cigarette smoking declines in popularity. But US regulators have been cracking...
