Overnight Devaluation: TRYP Jerusalem Award Night Costs Have Doubled

Wyndham is one odd loyalty program. You can’t transfer points from any banks like you can to Choice, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, and Marriott. They used to have an award chart that they got rid of in order to make all hotels cost 15K points. Then they brought back an award chart with all hotels costing […]

By ERIC TUCKER and MICHAEL BALSAMO WASHINGTON — Four members of the Chinese military have been charged with breaking into the networks of the Equifax credit reporting agency and stealing the personal information of tens of millions of Americans, the Justice Department said Monday, blaming Beijing for one of the largest hacks in history to target consumer data. The 2017 breach affected more than 145 million people, with the hackers successfully stealing names, addresses, Social Security and drive...

Lots Of Misinformation About New Limits On Award Redemption At Many Marriott Hotels

Yesterday we learned that Marriott is going to let former Starwood hotel brands limit award redemptions on high demand dates during the year, matching what legacy Marriott brand hotels could do. There's been a lot of misinformation spreading since the change became public (on blogs, Marriott still hasn't told its members) so I wanted to correct these misimpressions. Analysis Of Marriott Hotel Redemption Category Changes Coming March 4

Marriott has an award chart with each hotel assigned a category from 1 to 8. That determines the price you'll pay in points for a standard room, as long as that room is available. Every year Marriott re-categorizes hotels, moving them up or down, largely based on whether the rates are expected higher or lower than the previous year. There's some wiggle room for adjustment, but changes largely track the hotel market. Here's what's happening March 4, 2020. Continue reading Analysis Of Marriot...

Frumpy Middle-aged Mom: So here’s what happened in the Galapagos

An iguana urinated on my head. Something like that will not fail to get your attention, I promise you. It was just one of the more interesting things that happened to me on my trip to the Galapagos Islands, from which I returned a changed person. So, I learned not to stand under a tree full of iguanas, or the local Ecuadorians are all going to laugh at you when the inevitable happens. This is an important life skill that I’m sure can be a metaphor for something. Let me know if you think of one. ...

The Plot Against Section 230 Is Being Run By Big Legacy Companies Who Failed To Adapt To The Internet (techdirt)

Last summer, we explained how it was not crazy to think that the narrative being pushed about internet companies and Section 230 was a manufactured narrative by Hollywood and other old legacy companies jealous of the success of new internet companies. Now, the NY Times has a detailed article on exactly that. It's about how a broad coalition of big, old, legacy companies are conspiring to punish Google and Facebook by convincing the media and politicians that Section 230 of the Communications Dec...

Marriott Adds Capacity Controls To Limit Awards At Many Hotels

Marriott doesn't have blackout dates. Award redemption is permitted on all dates. However hotels are allowed to have significant capacity controls for a handful of dates each year. Marriott is increasing the number of hotels that are allowed to limit award redemption at their busiest times. Marriott made a change to its terms and conditions and it's no longer only Marriott brands that can declare high demand dates where award redemption is limited. These redemption controls are now available ...

The Resort Fee At This Sheraton Includes Telling Your Kids You’re Getting Divorced

At the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani in Waikiki the $33 per night resort fee includes a keiki (child) gift upon request. It turns out the gift is a book“Dinosaurs Divorce, a Guide for Changing Families.” That’s right, the resort fee includes a ‘surprise’ gift intended to let children know their parents are breaking up. Hawaii used to be a romantic destination, but resort fees at the Princess Kaiulani turn it into something far darker. Continue reading The Resort Fee At This Sheraton Includes Tellin...

Mattress shopping with a bad back

The world is now filled with an insane variety of things you can sleep on. I ended up with a Purple 3 mattress, but holy cow -- what a ride! A while ago I moved all my stuff into storage except my 10+-year-old mattress. One marriage, one Great Pyrenees and who knows how many people who briefly tried to 'relate' to me later, that mattress had run its useful service life. As I re-emerge from #vanlife it has become time to purchase a new mattress. I bought my first mattress in 1994. It wa...

Marriott’s Elimination Of Annual Elite Nights For Meetings Is Retroactive

I suggested in December that they'd kill the benefit entirely and then days later a memo leaked that it would end December 31, 2019. There are two lingering issues, however. Early check-in breakdown

“You need to check in,” my friend texted me, a full month before our cruise. This seemed a little excessive. “Check in?” I asked. “Isn’t that a little presumptuous?” “No!” she insisted. “I just got an email saying everyone needed to check in. So, go do it!” “But doesn’t checking in mean, ya know, actually being there? Isn’t that the ‘in’ part of ‘checking in?’” I responded, feeling a little like I was inventing my own Seinfeld bit. “What happens if I check in, and between now and a month fro...

North Carolina Marriott Shut Down, Guests Locked Out Of Rooms

One person staying on property reported spending hours on the phone with Marriott "trying to get the..chain to help." The chain directed people to go into the office and get staff to find them somewhere else to stay. These were the employees who had just lost their jobs, and who abandoned the property early. Great strategy. Marriott also reportedly stated "they were under no legal obligation to help" although eventually helped guests transfer to another Residence Inn. Continue reading North C...

Dennis McCarthy column: 50 years ago, Valley’s college champs had no stars, but the sky was the limit

“We were never favored to win anything. Valley State College? Who the heck is that?” – Ron Valenti, team captain of the 1970 Division II College World Series champions — There were no stars on the team, no highly recruited, out-of-state players on full scholarship. They were just a bunch of home grown kids who loved baseball, and came together for one glorious season 50 years ago to win the College World Series for a fledgling school only 11 years old that was never favored to win anything.
