AOL Propelled Lawyers Onto the Internet

Verizon announced this morning that it is selling its media business – AOL and Yahoo – for $5 Billion. I couldn’t help but recall how AOL launched me from a practicing lawyer to a legal tech entrepreneur. The same was true for many other lawyers. AOL was the entry to the Internet in the 1990’s. Heck, we did not even call “it” the Internet or the World Wide Web (WWW). We called AOL an online community that we accessed via our home phone lines plugged into a disc we picked up at Barn...

The previous record was set two years ago when wildfires destroyed 1.67 million acres (2,609 square miles). “The 4 million mark is unfathomable. It boggles the mind, and it ta...

Temperatures to start cooling; High surf; strong currents could arrive

A cooling trend will slowly make Southern California more comfortable this weekend, but a southern swell from Hurricane Marie could bring strong currents to the coastal waters, making swimming along the beach a bit more dangerous for those hoping to beat the heat, weather forecasters said. After days of triple-digit heat, only select areas in Los Angeles County valleys were expected to hit 100 degrees or higher Saturday, with the rest of the inland regions expected to be in the upper 90s, Meteor...

Legal Blog Networks Help Bar Associations Connect People With Lawyers

Thirty some years ago, as a practicing lawyer, I’d receive a carbon copy of a lawyer referral slip from the State Bar of Wisconsin. Someone from the La Crosse area had contacted the State Bar, via a toll free number displayed in the yellow pages, asking for a referral to a local lawyer. I was on the referral list for matters in which I had no deep expertise. Being I was next up on the list, my name, with nothing on my background nor expertise, was given to the person who called the Bar....

CS Review: Amazon Prime’s Blow the Man Down

CS Review: Amazon Prime’s Blow the Man Down In Blow the Man Down, two young sisters are in the act of fitting a corpse into a tiny cooler. One of them, Mary Beth (played by Morgan Saylor), starts panicking (as one does) during the grisly affair. The other, Priscilla (played by Sophie Lowe), calmly responds with an anecdote about coleslaw, “the whitest, goopiest shit ever,” she says, reminding her sibling that she eventually ate said shit after a boy called her a pussy. The speech works and ev...

Ravens make Don Martindale the highest-paid defensive coordinator in football

The Ravens may have to worry at least a little bit about losing offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Ian Rapoport of the NFL reports that the Ravens have signed Martindale to a new three-year deal, which makes him the highest-paid defensive coordinator in football. Martindale drew plenty of praise for his work with the reworked Baltimore defense in 2019, which suffered plenty of free-agency losses and had to reload on the fly.

The Hollywood Media Professionals, formerly known as the Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters, has a treat in store for members at its upcoming luncheon at the Airtel Plaza Hotel in Van Nuys on March 13: it’s the Diamond Jubilee, honoring 75 years of game shows. Scheduled to appear on the dais is Michael Burger, Peter Marshall, Wink Martindale, Marc Summers and Bob Eubanks. Ravens defensive coordinator: A guy as big as Derrick Henry shouldn’t be able to run like that

Derrick Henry is almost unfair. Martindale said it's just not natural for Henry, who's listed at 6-foot-3 and 247 pounds, to be able to move as well as he does. The good news for the Ravens is that they've had Henry's number: In two career games against the Ravens, one in 2017 and one in 2018, Henry has totaled just 15 carries for 47 yards, plus three catches for 15 yards.

The ABA Reports on Lawyer Websites and Lawyer Marketing

We always look forward to the ABA Legal Technology Resource Center’s Annual Legal Technology Survey Report on the use of technology in the legal profession. The summary of the “Marketing and Communication” portion of the 2019 survey was recently published. It was written by our good friend Allison Shields and contains some fascinating (and worrisome) statistics. Respondents to the 2019 Survey segment covering websites and law firm marketing were mostly solos or from smaller firms, consisting of ...

Connecting Lawyers With People, For Good

On today’s anniversary of 9/11, I couldn’t help but to think back on twenty years ago. I draw inspiration from the challenges and adversity we face as a country and the heroes who rise on those occasions to help others – I got it from my Mom. On 9/11, eighteen years ago today, I was in a Boston hotel across the street from where the five terrorists who flew the American Airlines plane into the first World Trade Center stayed. I was in Boston after selling Prairielaw.com, a virtual legal communi...

‘Blow the Man Down’ Review: A Chilling Coen Brothers-Esque Crime Drama With a Feminist Twist [Tribeca]

Sex, drugs, and murder rock the sleepy New England seaside town in Blow the Man Down, a chillingly savage debut feature from co-directors and screenwriters Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy that makes a strong case for them to be the heirs to the Coen Brothers’ wintry crime drama throne. Plenty of talented filmmakers have tried to ape the Coens’ singular brand of brutal absurdity, but Cole and Krudy succeed in pulling off Fargo-esque shenanigans while adding their own feminist twist. Bl...

The first day of the long-awaited infected blood inquiry has heard from several victims about the devastating impact it had on their lives. Martindale told the inquiry that his brother Richard, who also had severe haemophilia, contracted the virus and died aged 23 in 1990. Tainted blood inquiry: First witness recalls being told he had year to live and not to tell family he had HIV

The infected blood inquiry has heard from its first victim, who had to fight back tears as he recalled being told he had year to live having contracted HIV through contaminated blood.  Two previous inquiries have been branded a whitewash by campaigners, but on Tuesday morning Derek Martindale took the stand to tell the hearing his story.  In the mid-80s, Mr Martindale was receiving treatment for severe haemophilia, which involved receiving blood products.   Questioned by Jenni Richards QC, Couns...
