2020 NHL Trade Deadline: Fisher’s Winners & Losers

By my count, there were 30 deals on deadline day involving 55 players and 25 draft picks. That included 36 legitimate NHLers, plus 19 minor-leaguers or prospects on the move on Feb. 24. Dating back to Feb. 5 — when Toronto acquired Jack Campbell and Kyle Clifford from Los Angeles — there were exactly 50 trades leading up to the 2020 deadline. It sure felt like a busy month, with business picking up as per usual but even more so than anticipated. Ironically, I posted a poll on Twitter sett...

Golden Knights Trade Deadline Review

Las Vegas is a town of magic and flair, so one would expect their professional sports franchise to follow suit. Well, in their third season, the Vegas Golden Knights continue to make trades at the annual trade deadline. In their inaugural season, the team acquired Tomas Tatar from the Detroit Red Wings for multiple picks, and, last season, acquired the biggest fish on the market, Mark Stone, from the Ottawa Senators, turning multiple assets into star players. With limited cap space at the st...

A Small-Town Cop’s Fight to Stop Angry Men With Guns From Killing Women

At 27, Valerie Martinez had never known a life without fear. Her earliest memories were of hiding from her father in the tiny space between her daybed and the wall when he came home drunk and volatile. He once kicked Martinez’s sister so hard that she vomited, then threw her into the empty bathtub with a thud. He insulted their mother, an undocumented Mexican immigrant, with racist slurs and dared the children to contact the police when he beat her. “Call them,” he taunted. “They’ll take her awa...

Kings may have already made their biggest trades as NHL deadline approaches

With the NHL’s trade deadline Monday, the Kings and their general manager Rob Blake expect to be fielding calls and making inquiries up until the noon Pacific cutoff time for trades. “(Teams) tend to wait to make sure if they’re completely in (the playoffs) if they’re going to give up assets,” Blake said in a phone call earlier this month, adding that the accumulation of cap space for prorated salaries was also a factor in trades materializing near the last moment. The Kings have clearly identif...

King stops Chaminade, Whitfield to advance to girls basketball Division 1 semifinals

RIVERSIDE >> King’s girls basketball team wanted badly to avenge a championship loss Wednesday night, and that, of course, meant points. More specifically, it meant a lack of them for its high-scoring opponent. Senior forward Olivia Moran scored a game-high 18 points, and sister Nyah added 12, including a game-clinching, three-point play with 45 seconds left as the Wolves outlasted visiting Chaminade 53-43 in a CIF-Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinal. Wednesday was a rematch of last year’s ...

Kings to begin 5-game homestand against high-scoring Panthers

As their offense awakened and a modicum of momentum mounted, the Kings found a way to take a step back against the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday. Coming off two wins, they allowed six goals in the final two periods of a 6-3 loss, and the following day they traded defenseman Alec Martinez to a division rival, the Vegas Golden Knights. On Thursday, the Kings welcome the Florida Panthers to open a five-game homestand that is loaded with star power on opposing teams. The Panthers are the league’s fourth ...

The 32-year-old Martinez has spent his entire NHL career with the Kings, who drafted him in 2007.

Flames Need Defensive Help Before Trade Deadline

Heading into February, the Calgary Flames were once again displaying a need for a top-six winger. Additional defensive depth was a secondary concern, but it has remained on the radar as the NHL Trade Deadline approached. But after two of the team’s top three defenders – Mark Giordano and Travis Hamonic – fell to injuries, defensive reinforcement has emerged as the team’s top priority ahead of the Feb. 24 deadline. Blues Could Pursue Several Top Trade Targets

The St. Louis Blues are in chaos at the moment. It is their worst stretch of the season results-wise, as they are 2-6-2 in their last 10 games. Additionally, the sudden and unexpected loss of Jay Bouwmeester has thrown their blueline into disarray. Unfortunately, the Blues find themselves in this situation just under a week removed from the NHL’s Feb. 24 trade deadline. That gives the defending Stanley Cup Champions and their general manager, Doug Armstrong, six days to decide whether they n...

Davey Martinez provides some clarity on the Nationals’ infield plans

When Davey Martinez fills in his lineup card on Opening Day, there are going to be many different ways he will be able to pencil in his infielders. The Nationals manager provided some insight Monday on how he'll be narrowing down those decisions. In his daily press conference with reporters, Martinez said he wants offseason addition Starlin Castro to focus on second base at least for the first few weeks of spring training.

Blues Options to Fill Bouwmeester Void

Fear gripped every St. Louis Blues fan, and indeed the entire hockey community, as news spread that veteran defenseman Jay Bouwmeester had collapsed on the bench in a game last Tuesday night against the Anaheim Ducks. Addressing Blues’ Weaknesses at the Trade Deadline

The St. Louis Blues have hit quite a rough patch since the beginning of 2020. Recently for the club, they have won just two of their last 11 games (2-6-3). They sit at the top of the Central, regardless, at 74 points. It feels as if Blues’ general manager Doug Armstrong needs to make a move or two at the trade deadline to give this team a boost. And with Armstrong’s recent trade record, I say he gives it a go and makes a move. The team has looked all out of sorts for quite a while now, and s...

‘Unhoused’ symposium at USC gives federal, state and local decision-makers forum to address homelessness

During a meeting Thursday that included the nation’s housing secretary, two former governors and mayors of some of California’s biggest cities, USC researchers released results of a new poll that underscored the urgent nature of the gathering. Homelessness — not climate change or immigration — is the single biggest problem in California, according to about 1,000 likely voters surveyed by USC. Policy makers on Thursday were eager to talk about it. “Declare an emergency,” former California Gov. Gr...

St. Louis rotation questions revolve around Carlos Martinez

As far as the St. Louis Cardinals are concerned, how Carlos Martinez feels on days he's not throwing may be as important has how well he performs on the mound. A healthy Martinez is likely the final piece in the Cardinals' starting rotation. A Martinez whose shoulder, like last year, doesn't recover quickly from starts could reprise his role as the Cardinals' closer.
