With Gophers men's basketball, the disappointment is all connected

For confirmation of just how precarious sports outcomes can be – and the butterfly effect that ensues from one moment – go ahead and watch one more time, if you can stomach it, Darryl Morsell's game-winning three-pointer for Maryland against the Gophers with 1.9 seconds left Wednesday. The deep shot, from a couple steps behind the three-point line, rattled on enough parts of the rim that if it was just an inch to the left or an inch longer, it probably would have bounced out. The Gophers would h...

ICE ran facial recognition searches on millions of Maryland drivers' photos without court approval; activists say they're targeting immigrants

ICE has done facial recognition searches on millions of photos Maryland drivers without court approval. They appear to be targeting immigrants who sought driver’s licenses after 2013. The access sought by Maryland state officials “goes far beyond what other states allow and that alarms immigration activists in a state that grants special driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants,” report Drew Harwell and Erin Cox at the Washington Post: More than 275,000 such licenses have been issued stat...

Self-belief surges as Trump's conservative faithful plan four more years

At the annual CPAC conference in Maryland, Republicans were in buoyant mood about the president’s re-election prospects“Four more years!” the crowd chanted at Mike Pence, the vice-president. “Four more years!”Not so long ago, under the shadow of investigations, impeachment and dismal approval ratings, Donald Trump’s re-election seemed a long shot. Baltimore ex-mayor sentenced to three years in prison in children's book fraud scheme

Former Baltimore mayor Catherine Pugh was sentenced on Thursday to three years in federal prison for fraud and tax evasion schemes involving bogus sales of her children's book series. U.S. District Judge Deborah Chasanow ordered Pugh, who served for three years as mayor of Maryland's largest city, to surrender no later than April 13. Suckers List: How Allstate's Secret Auto Insurance Algorithm Squeezes Big Spenders

Insurers are supposed to price based on risk, but Allstate's algorithm put a thumb on the scale. From a report: Seven years ago, Allstate Corporation told Maryland regulators it was time to update its auto insurance rates. The insurer said its new, sophisticated risk analysis showed it was charging nearly all of its 93,000 Maryland customers outdated premiums. Some of the old rates were off by miles. One 36-year-old man from Prince George's County, Md., who Allstate said in public records should...

Mark Turgeon still frustrated with officials as Maryland prepares for next test at Minnesota

That didn't stop head coach Mark Turgeon from making a point to call out the officiating Sunday. Turgeon lost his most important, and experienced, player with just a few minutes left in the game thanks to a technical foul given out by the officiating crew after Anthony Cowan kicked his foot out in frustration after a no-call. The Maryland head coach unsurprisingly came to the defense of Cowan, but didn't directly complain about the officials in regards to the call.

Snowstorm to target interior Northeast as I-95 corridor remains in snow drought

A large storm will spread rain across the Interstate 95 corridor in the Northeast through Wednesday, but like so many others this winter, the storm will send snow elsewhere. “In liberal Takoma Park, a bold new climate proposal: Banning fossil fuels”

Oh! Takoma! “Takoma Park, the liberal enclave just outside Washington known as the ‘Berkeley of the East,’ is debating whether to outlaw gas stoves, leaf blowers and water heaters. The proposal… would ban all gas appliances, close fossil fuel pipelines, and move gas stations outside city limits by 2045. The cost to the average homeowner could reach $25,000, officials wrote.” [Rebecca Tan, Washington Post] Tags: climate change, Maryland, oil industry

With Liberty and Two-Track Justice for All

‘Equal Justice Under Law.”What a joke! Those four stirring words, chiseled into the marble atop the U.S. Supreme Court’s portico, were transformed into a punchline Thursday. Did Anthony Cowan deserve the technical foul that ended his night vs. Ohio State?

Anthony Cowan was handed a technical foul late in the second half of Maryland's matchup with Ohio State that resulted in his disqualification. Cowan, with four personal fouls at the time, was hammered on a layup attempt with 3:54 left in the contest against the Buckeyes. He had cut the Buckeyes' lead to 64-59 and thought he was headed to the free-throw line for an and-1.

Maryland doesn't lose any ground in Big 10 standings after loss to Ohio State

Maryland suffered a frustrating loss to Ohio State on the road Sunday in a game that featured their best player fouling out thanks to a more than questionable technical foul. The good news is that Penn State lost, too, so Maryland didn't lose any ground in its quest to win the Big 10 regular-season championship for the first time. With four games to go, it still holds a two-game lead over Penn State, Michigan State, Iowa and Wisconsin in the conference standings.
