Matt Dumba's 'anger' led to indefinite stint on sidelines

Fans of the Minnesota Wild would have wished that Matt Dumba wouldn't have thrown a “wild punch” at Matthew Tkachuk in a game against the Calgary Flames on Dec. 15. Dumba, wearing a brace around his right arm, told reporters that he didn't feel the pain of the injury until he had a chance to calm down in the penalty box. Dumba's surgery came on Dec. 26 and along with it, a three-month timetable to return.

What the Flames Need at the Deadline

After a 7-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Jan. 13, the Calgary Flames won their 30th game of the season — seven short of their win total from a season ago — and stretching their record to 30-13-4 through 47 games. They are in the top spot of the Pacific Division as well as the Western Conference and rank second in the NHL behind the Tampa Bay Lightning. People thought the Flames would improve over their 37-35-10 record from 2017-18 and many would have said they’d be a playoff team as...

Backlund’s Game Rounding Into Form Nicely

The Calgary Flames have enjoyed the luxury of having major offensive weapons to rely on during what’s been an outstanding 2018-19 campaign so far. The bad news for the rest of their Western Conference counterparts is that one of their understated depth scorers, Mikael Backlund, is starting to contribute more consistently. Backlund hit the score sheet with his tenth goal of the season in a 5-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche to kick off the Flames’ latest homestand on a positive note. The 29-year...

Is Gaudreau Making a Case for MVP?

Johnny Gaudreau is having a season for the ages. Add to the fraction that the Calgary Flames are sitting atop the Western Conference 44 games into the season — a feat the franchise hasn’t accomplished since 1993 – and the Salem, N.J. native’s campaign looks even more special. His 35 points (16 goals, 19 assists) since Dec. 1 makes him the league’s top scorer since. Similarly, in his last 25 games, he has 20 goals and 25 assists, leading Calgary to its most recent hot streak. This offensive...

Flames’ Tkachuk Blossoming as NHL’s Most Valuable Agitator

The Calgary Flames once again showcased their remarkable come-from-behind abilities in a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers that guaranteed them of at least a .500 record on this current four-game road trip. The Flames’ latest triumph was spearheaded by Matthew Tkachuk, who continues to have a knack for producing timely goals this season. The feisty 21-year-old netted the game-tying goal late in the third period and later assisted on the game-winning marker by T.J. Brodie. Tkachuk’s her...

Tkachuk assisted on the winner in the 3-on-3 extra session. Philadelphia’s Jordan Weal turned the puck over in the Flyers offensive zone to set up a 2-on-1 break. Flames’ Rittich Solidifying Himself as Number One

Whether the Calgary Flames declare it or not, David Rittich is their number one goaltender. He’s started five of the last six games and was brilliant in Thursday’s 4-1 road win against the Winnipeg Jets. He has also faced more shots than Mike Smith and played against the toughest opponents. The goalie – who entered the matchup with an 11-4-2 record, 2.29 goals against average (GAA) and 0.923 save percentage (SV%) – improved his numbers to 12-4-2, 2.22 GAA and 0.926 SV% following the 35-save perf...

Pending RFAs to Put Teams in Cap Hell

The first part of the 2018-19 NHL season was dominated by William Nylander talk. Talk about his contract, talk about offer sheets and talk about possible trade options. That tireless cycle finally came to an end on Dec. 1 when the Toronto Maple Leafs signed Nylander just before the five o’clock deadline. Pierre-Luc Dubois Proving Many Experts Wrong

Ah yes, the Auston Matthews, Patrik Laine draft. Who could forget what happened after their names were called first and second in 2016? I never will. The Columbus Blue Jackets won one of the lottery draws in that offseason. Their reward was picking third overall. They won the right to select “can’t miss” Finnish prospect Jesse Puljujarvi. You remember the build up to that draft, right? Puljujarvi was the consensus third-overall pick that season. No matter which media outlet or publication you tu...

5 Flames Who Could Make the NHL All-Star Game

The 2019 NHL All-Star Game will begin on Jan. 25 with the All-Star Skills Competition and the game will take place the following day on Jan. 26 in San Jose. Since the inception of the three-on-three tournament in 2016, where four teams based on the league’s four divisions compete in a single-elimination tournament. Calgary Flames whiz kid Johnny Gaudreau has been a stalwart in the tournament. He has participated in all three installments and should be part of the 11-man roster representing...

Flames Recent Slide: Trend or Just a Red Flag?

The Christmas break couldn’t come at a better time for the Calgary Flames. The team leads the Pacific Division with 47 points. They have lost three straight games, though. It’s their second three-game losing skid of the season. Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to the St. Louis Blues might serve as a wake up call for a common topic in recent memory: lack of secondary scoring. “We Can’t Just Rely on That Top Line” Correct. This sentence was heard many times during the 2017-18 campaign. The Flames mis...

3 Reasons the Flames Could Be Cup Contenders

Heading into the National Hockey League’s annual holiday break, the Calgary Flames are in an unfamiliar position: first place. The Flames lead the Pacific Division at Christmas, and are among the top teams in the Western Conference. Calgary Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau is the team’s offensive leader. (Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports) Given that the Flames struggled frequently last season and missed the playoffs by 11 points, their success this season has turned a few heads around the hockey w...

Flames Providing Home Faithful With Plenty to Cheer About

While the Calgary Flames were on the short end of a 5-4 shootout decision against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Dec. 20 to begin their final home stand before the Christmas break, you couldn’t help but think that fans leaving the Scotiabank Saddledome were far more exhilarated than disappointed by what they saw. After all, the sellout crowd of 19,289 had just witnessed one of the most entertaining games of the 2018-19 season between two red-hot clubs and fellow divisional leaders. The heavyweigh...

Oilers Koskinen Excelling in NHL After Time in Europe

VANCOUVER — Mikko Koskinen always knew he’d return to the NHL. The six-foot-seven Finnish goalie was taken 31st overall by the New York Islanders in the 2009 draft but logged just four games with the franchise before returning to Europe in 2011. Koskinen thought he’d be back in North America the following season but instead landed with the SKA St. Petersburg in the Kontinental Hockey League. “I felt that I could get better there every year so it was the perfect set up for me,” he said. “I really...

Is This the Best Flames Team Since 2004?

After a crazy 6-5 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Dec. 12, which included two goals in the final 1:08 from Rasmus Andersson (his first NHL goal) and Sean Monahan to knot the game at five — eventually setting up Johnny Gaudreau’s game-winner in overtime — I’m sure all that was going through the minds of Calgary Flames fans was the voice of Flames radio play-by-play announcer Derek Wills belting out “The find-a-way-Flames have done it again!” No, this is not a replay of 2014-15 seaso...

Hitchcock’s Line Combos Looking for Goals

A major theme of the early days since Ken Hitchcock replaced Todd McLellan as the Edmonton Oilers’ head coach is that ‘Hitch-Hockey’ has led to tighter team defense but the Oilers are failing to score enough five-on-five goals to win regularly. Is it true? A seven-goal explosion on Friday night against the Minnesota Wild and six more goals Tuesday against the Colorado Avalanche may have calmed some of the fears about the team’s ability to score, but more often than not with Hitchcock at th...

Best in the West: What the Calgary Flames Are Doing Right

The Calgary Flames are off to a stellar start in this 2018-19 National Hockey League regular season. With a commanding 19-10-2 record, the Flames currently sit atop the Pacific Division and the Western Conference. The momentum does not seem to be slowing down, either, as can be seen by the 3-1 record last week, which included a momentous 9-6 thrashing of the Columbus Blue Jackets on Dec. 4. CALGARY — Oliver Kylington had his first NHL goal and helped set-up the game-winner as the Calgary Flames grabbed first place in the Western Conference with a 5-2 victory over the Nashville Predators on Saturday night. The decisive goal came from Garnet Hathaway, who broke a 2-2 tie at 6:03 of the third period, neatly deflecting in Matthew Tkachuk’s point shot.
