Everyone Who Ignored Trump’s Requests To Do Something Obstruction-esque

As special counsel Robert Mueller himself said, President Trump may have been more successful in influencing the Russia investigation had his aides been more willing to go along with his requests. As we go through the report, we’re keeping a running list of all the people who had to ignore or rebuff a request from Trump to do something to meddle in the investigation: Chris Christie:  After former National Security Advisor Mike Flynn’s resignation, Trump dined with former Gov. Chris Christie, ...

Hulu and Netflix may face subpoena over Fyre Festival documentaries

Hulu LLC and Netflix Inc. may face subpoenas over their production of documentaries about the festival. Gregory Messer, the Chapter 7 trustee for the Fyre Festival estate, sought the subpoenas in a filing Tuesday in bankruptcy court. He asked the judge to require Hulu and Netflix to show whether they paid for footage that should have been deemed an asset of the company. “In order to create the documentaries, both Hulu and Netflix used unique behind-the-scenes footage of the festival,” Messer s...

Gary McFarland on Madison Ave.

Following my post on Gary McFarland last week, I nosed around online and found a Fresca TV ad that McFarland wrote, arranged and conducted in 1966. It was posted by Kristian St. Clair, who directed the documentary This Is Gary McFarland. First, here's the Fresca soda ad, with McFarland in the ad conducting... So I reached out to Kristian to find out more about McFarland's advertising career. Here's what Kristian told me: Hi Marc. I'm glad you asked. It's definitely one of my favorite Gary ...

Olivia, Gary and the Zombies

In The Wall Street Journal this week, I interviewed Olivia Newton-John for my my "House Call" column in the paper's Mansion section (go here). Until I began my pre-interview research, I had no idea Olivia's grandfather was Max Born, the physicist and mathematician who received a Nobel Prize for developing quantum mechanics. Or that when her mother was little, Albert Einstein played violin in her mother's home in Germany while her father played piano. As Olivia pertly remarked, "Well, at leas...

Gary McFarland: Departure Point

In the late 1950s and early '60s, a new breed of jazz arranger began to surface. Some were deeply influenced by modern classical orchestral music. Others such as Johnny Mandel, Manny Albam, Johnny Pate and Oliver Nelson were swayed by the drama and subtle incidental melodies of television and the movies. Among the latter group, the most innovative and musically dashing was Gary McFarland. Born in Oregon in 1933, McFarland was something of a savant, teaching himself to play boogie-woogie piano....

Jared Kushner uses WhatsApp to talk with foreign leaders, claims Cummings

House Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings says Abbe Lowell has confirmed that President Donald Trump's son-in-law and White House advisor Jared Kushner has been using the encryptable/disappear-able messaging WhatsApp to communicate with leaders of foreign nations. "Mr. Lowell could not answer whether Mr. Kushner's communications included classified information." Mr. Kushner's attorney disputes the claims in the Cummings letter. Kushner's the tip of the iceberg -- the House attention to this ...

Movie reviews. Almost.

I am on a sad-movie-watching binge. It started a few weeks ago. Wait. No. It probably started when I was in third grade and there was no grownup home until 8pm, so after school I went to the movie theater every day for a week to watch Wilbur lose Charlotte and learn to fend for himself. I think people who have sadness in their life use movies to work out their sadness by seeing it in other people. You know that truism about how we see other people so much more clearly than we see ourselves? I...

Andy King, Subject of the Most Infamous Scene in ‘Fyre’, Begged Filmmakers to Cut It

Of the two recently released Fyre Festival documentaries, only one featured a scene where someone confessed that they’d be willing to perform fellatio in order to help the soon-to-be-doomed fest succeed. That would be Netflix’s Fyre, in which event producer Andy King admits that Fyre Festival “mastermind” Billy McFarland asked him to perform oral sex on some guy in order to secure a large quantity of Evian water for the festival. The moment quickly went viral after Fyre premiered, and turned Ki...

Report: Officials Pushed Flynn’s Saudi Nuke Project After Warnings It Broke Law

fThe Trump White House pursued a controversial nuclear energy project linked to Saudi Arabia even after warnings from career National Security Council staff and ethics officials that doing so without congressional approval would violate the law, the House Oversight Committee said in a preliminary report Tuesday. The project was pushed by a top aide to ex-National Security Advisor Mike Flynn, who served as an advisor to a company lobbying for the project, and the aide continued to stress that ...

Introducing Trout Smith's

I don't think I'll ever forget getting a phone call from Shane Gray of Graywolf Rods which was not too long after I had started writing this website in 2008.  Shane wanted to talk about fiberglass fly rods and what his ideas were moving forward and it was pretty exciting to have a builder that I followed and admired reach out for where I thought this whole "Glass Revolution" was going. That first phone call was followed by many other phone calls, text messages and emails over the years and I've w...

This Nail Brand Is Donating Money to the Ripped-Off Fyre Fest Bahamian Workers

In 2017, "business man" Billy McFarland and rapper Ja Rule teamed up to create what was supposed to be a luxurious Bahamian music festival called Fyre Festival, that ended up being a severe failure with tents and cold cheese sandwiches. In the last month, both Hulu and Netflix have both come out with documentaries on the now legendary disaster, and it's coming to light that many of the Bahamian workers that were hired by McFarland were not paid. Original Content podcast: Fyre Festival docs shine light on a social media-fueled disaster

Netflix and Hulu have each released their own documentaries about the infamous Fyre Festival, and the hard-working hosts of the Original Content podcast have watched both of them. We’re joined this week by Brian Heater, and the three of us are unanimous on one thing: If you’re only going to watch one of these documentaries, make it “Fyre” on Netflix. It’s the better-made movie, offering a clearer retelling of what actually went wrong at the first-time music festival in the Bahamas. But if you...

‘Fyre’ and ‘Fyre Fraud’: Which One is Better? (And Which One is Less Ethically Compromised?)

It’s been less than two years since the debacle of the Fyre Festival. The proposed event on a Bahamian island was going to showcase major musical acts such as Blink-182 and Major Lazer; it was overseen by, among others, rapper Ja Rule; and it would create a new Coachella or Burning Man for the social-media elite. Of course, the dreams of the festival organizers were revealed to be impossible at best and criminal at worst; when attendees (who had paid an insane amount of money) arrived, they...

Netflix's 'Fyre' director says Fyre Festival founder Billy McFarland could make a comeback when he gets out of prison

Despite Fyre Festival founder Billy McFarland currently serving a six-year prison sentence for fraud charges related to the disastrous music festival, Netflix's "Fyre" director Chris Smith thinks we haven't seen the last of McFarland.
