John Calipari: Jimmy Butler bullied Karl-Anthony Towns

In an interesting but sometimes wandering recent ESPN story that maybe attempts to weave together too many narratives, we nonetheless learned — or gleaned from some new voices — more about the dynamic in the Timberwolves locker room that preceded Jimmy Butler's trade to the 76ers. The Jackie MacMullan piece at times reads as an attempt at rehabilitating the perception of Karl-Anthony Towns … and a Derrick Rose comeback story … and a referendum on Jimmy Butler, but where it gains the most steam i...

Unclaimed veterans buried with dignity, thanks to strangers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — When the flags were removed from the caskets and folded with military precision, there were no family members there to receive them. So, the banners were passed, hand-to-hand, through the crowd. Some mourners wept as they clutched the flags briefly. Others kissed them. But the three veterans laid to rest on […]

Marc Gasol, Mike Conley reportedly meet with Grizzlies owner

This summer, Robert Pera maintained ownership of the Memphis Grizzlies and with that meant the status quo remained — the Grizzlies were going to try to ride the duo of Marc Gasol and Mike Conley to the playoffs. After falling to the Celtics Friday night, Memphis is 19-26, has lost 10-of-11, and are 14th in the Western Conference. Around the league, there is a buzz that Memphis may have to look at trading Gasol, who has a player option this summer and could become a free agent.

Heisler: With Kyrie Irving, Jimmy Butler looking wiggy, list of stars who might be available keeps growing

Now, the free agent summer to end all free agent summers. Of course, this is a big deal around here, once the glamor capital of the NBA, better known lately as its leader in salary cap space. A year ago the Lakers had two max-contract slots, cashed one in on LeBron James and saved the second for 2019. This year, it’s the Clippers who can create two max slots. Happily for the local teams, this isn’t a thin class like last summer’s, which was basically LeBron and Paul George. This one is loaded wi...

Martin Luther King Jr. assassination

Americans, we’re much better with pop music than history. Which is why the line in U2’s “Pride” that goes, “Shot rings out in the Memphis sky,” is how a lot of people remember where Martin Luther King, Jr., leader of the American Civil Rights movement, was tragically gunned down in 1968. That’s because most of us don’t really care where it happened. To most Americans, Memphis conjures up images of the neon lights of Beale Street, smoky barbecue, and dirty blues. In the American collective con...

Report: Marc Gasol, Mike Conley meet with ownership to discuss Grizzlies' future

There is no indication that either requested a trade, and Charania reported that meetings with Pera when he is in Memphis are not necessarily out of the ordinary. That this news comes amid reports...

50 moments from 1969 that shaped entertainment and pop culture

It was the last year of the ’60s, and the last year for Boris Karloff, Judy Garland and the Beatles, too. But it was also the first year for Led Zeppelin, Jennifer Aniston, “Easy Rider” and Jay-Z, too. John Lennon and Yoko Ono spent part of it in bed in public. The Doors’ Jim Morrison spent part of it in jail. Moviegoers spent time watching “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” while at home they watched a brand-new show called “The Brady Bunch” about a brand-new kind of blended family, the youn...

Should a Pastor Ever Retire?

Recently, someone asked me if I was retired. The question flummoxed (a word for William’s list) me somewhat. That’s because I am partially retired. These days I’m receiving Social Security payments as well as withdrawals on my Guidestone account. The IMB made me an Emeritus Missionary, and Mid-America Seminary named me a Professor Emeritus. So, by those measures, I am retired. Yet, I still go on international mission trips, and I still teach some for Mid-America Baptist Seminary. Beyond that, ou...

Argument analysis: Justices weigh text and history of 21st Amendment in challenge to state residency requirement for liquor licenses

Ratified in 1933, the 21st Amendment ended Prohibition – which (fun fact!) was established by the 18th Amendment, ratified 100 years ago today. It also gave states broad power to regulate alcoholic beverages. At today’s oral argument in Tennessee Wine and Spirits Retailers Association v. Blair, the justices considered exactly how expansive that regulatory power is. In particular, does the 21st Amendment allow Tennessee to impose a two-year residency requirement for anyone who wants a retail lice...
