It's time to redefine 'masculinity'

APA Guidelines for the Psychological Practice of Boys and Men represents the first time the association has published rules specifically for treating white, Western males. Though the guidelines are data-driven and therapeutically sound, a corner of the American Right (and some on the Left) has taken offense. Men still dominate statistics in a number of categories, including suicide rates, substance abuse, and violence. None Many men don't like their power being questioned, a difficult situation...

Raise boys who end the #MeToo crisis

Former FOX News host Gretchen Carlson says that, as a culture, we didn't know how to speak openly about sexual harassment until very, very recently. And there's still a lot of work to be done. Her docuseries on the subject, Breaking the Silence airs January 14 at 8 PM on Lifetime. Her own experiences of sexual harassment played out on air in real time... and were wrongly condoned by a major news organization. Gretchen has emerged as one of the most influential voices in the #MeToo movement, lo...

Scientists are still fascinated by Phineas Gage. Here's why.

Phineas Gage is considered to be Patient Zero for traumatic brain injury. The story of Gage at the time was that his damaged brain rendered him a different, monstrous person. Short men are indirectly aggressive toward taller men, study finds

A recent study examined the Napoleon complex through economic games. The results showed that shorter men are more likely than taller men to keep a disproportionate amount of resources for themselves, but only when the other player can't retaliate. The study suggests that the Napoleon complex is most likely to manifest in situations where the shorter man has all the power. None In the early 19th century, Napoléon Bonaparte was perhaps best known for leading successful military campaigns and serving...

Why natural disasters make men take more risks

The 2011 earthquake in Japan was among the most intense earthquakes to occur in recorded history. Thanks to regularly distributed surveys, however, it also became a unique research opportunity to compare civilians' behaviors from before the earthquake with their behavior after. Now, researchers have found data that suggests being exposed to a natural disaster tends to make men more prone to engage in risky behavior, like gambling and drinking, over the long term. None In March of 2011, the tectoni...

Studies suggest parenthood makes people unhappy

Folk knowledge assumes having children is the key to living a happy, meaningful life; however, empirical evidence suggests nonparents are the more cheery bunch. The difference is most pronounced in countries like the United States. In countries that support pro-family policies, parents can be just as happy as their child-free peers. These findings suggest that we can't rely on folk knowledge to make decisions about parenting, on either the individual or societal levels. 11 Esther Perel quotes that set the record straight on love and sex

The idea of the "one" sets us up for unrealistic expectations. Communication relies on honest conversation and plenty of listening.Change yourself, Perel writes, don't try to change your partner. None I discovered Belgian psychotherapist Esther Perel when she was featured in the NY Times in 2014. Only then did I backtrack and read her 2006 bestseller, Mating in Captivity. The book resonated at time when I was just meeting the woman who would become my wife. Perel's frankness was a refreshing br...

Humiliation, homoeroticism and animal cruelty: inside the frathouse

Photographer Andrew Moisey uncovered ritual hazing, extreme drunkenness and toxic masculinity on one college campus – from men destined to be America’s future leadersLast year in the US, four freshman students died as a direct result of hazing rituals during college fraternity initiation ceremonies. All the deaths occurred during or just after drinking bouts in which the victims consumed vast amounts of spirits in a short space of time while older students egged them on. One of the deceased, Max...

How sexual fantasies affect your relationship

There are two main types of sexual fantasies. One of them is more harmful to the a relationship or marriage than the other (by a lot). Sexually fantasizing about somebody else, though, neither hurts a relationship nor helps it; instead, it has the same mental impact as random daydreaming. None The beginning of a relationship is exciting. You get to learn more about a beautiful person who wants to learn more about you at the same time. You both get the opportunity to make an increasingly deep co...

What's your daddy?

Polldaddy is dead; long live Crowdsignal, its successor in the platform-agnostic poll- and survey-creation business. The service, which is owned by Wordpress, was silent on the reason for the recent name change, leaving us to wonder: Was daddy too patriarchal? Was the name likely to be confused with the unrelated GoDaddy*, the internet-domain registrar? As long as we’re asking questions, what accounts for the plethora of DADDY brand names? There are 757 DADDY registrations in the U.S. Patent...

On the Street…Tailoring, London

I’m really intrigued by Davide Taub’s @davidetaub work at @gieveslondon ! It’s so hard to put a new twist on classic men’s tailoring but he seams (see what I did there) to be finding a way. I love this jacket reads as very buttoned-up (almost military or like a pea-coat) but (in the next photo) it reads as a normal-ish double-breasted jacket. People that say men’s tailoring is boring just aren’t looking closely enough.
