Daimler-backed Momenta says its robotaxis will be fully driverless and profitable in 2024

In China and the U.S., there’s much debate about when and how humans will achieve fully autonomous robotaxis at scale — cars that chauffeur passengers under complex road conditions without safety drivers behind the wheel. Many pieces are needed to make this happen: mammoth amounts of test data, advanced algorithms, strong operational teams, big checks from investors, local policy support, to name a handful. Until that day arrives, the bold claims from players in the field seem mostly out of reac...

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA: Quick but Detailed Walk Around This Sleek SUV

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA is certainly a stylish little guy. He’s the latest in what has been a busy year for Mercedes-Benz when it comes to their SUV and crossover lineup. We saw the new GLB roll into town, a compact city cruiser with a third row (it even has an AMG variant because why not). From there, Mercedes-Benz released the new midsize GLC, followed by the three-row GLE (we like the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe). After that, the larger GLS entered the fold with a whopping 500-plus lb-ft...

Car companies will sacrifice autonomous vehicles before they cut spending on EVs as the auto industry faces its biggest threat since the 2008 financial crisis, an expert says

While the coronavirus has created an enormous challenge for the auto industry, it isn't likely to derail plans to roll out new electric vehicles in the coming years, industry experts and automakers told Business Insider. Emissions and production regulations, particularly in Europe and China, will give auto companies little choice but to sell more EVs, said Maryann Keller, the principal of Maryann Keller and Associates.  Volkswagen, Toyota, and four other automakers told Business Insider the co...

COVID-19 rocked the auto industry, but the pandemic hasn't derailed the shift toward electric and self-driving cars. It's forging ahead.

The novel coronavirus has had a major impact on travel habits in recent months, but it won't have a profound impact on the future of electric and autonomous vehicles, industry experts told Business Insider. Autonomous-vehicle companies may add more limited-occupancy models to their lineups and increase their focus on deliveries, said Reilly Brennan, a partner at Trucks Venture Capital. And automakers may seek more partnerships related to electric-vehicle technology, but electric-vehicle adopti...

Mercedes-Benz, Nvidia partner to bring ‘software defined’ vehicles to market in 2024

Dig into the guts of a 2020 Mercedes-Benz — or just about any modern luxury vehicle — and dozens of electronic control units will appear. Traditional automakers have historically added ECUs as they have added more technology, a practice that has introduced complexity and cost as well as limitations that newer rivals like Tesla happily avoid. Today, Mercedes-Benz and Nvidia announced a partnership aimed at eliminating the complexity while boosting the performance and automated driving capabilitie...
