Villanueva comments on cuts to Special Victims, Cyber Crimes bureaus were ‘false,’ OIG says

The appointed watchdog for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department excoriated its leaders on Wednesday for what he said were false statements about recent budget cuts, including claims from the sheriff that he was being forced to eliminate investigative units. At a virtual press conference Wednesday, Inspector General Max Huntsman said the Sheriff’s Department “has falsely claimed they’ve been told to eliminate critical units” like the Special Victims and the Fraud and Cyber Crimes bureaus a...

15th Anniversary of Eye Prefer Paris

On June 26, 2006 I launched Eye Prefer Paris, and last Friday was the 15th anniversary. Here’s the first post I wrote.   About This blog This blog is about how a native New Yorker dreamed of moving to Paris …… and what he discovered once he got there. Come live this Paris dream vicariously through the eyes(and ears) of Richard Nahem. He writes his blog from his 18th century apartment overlooking tree-lined Place St. Paul in the fashionable Marais district of Paris. I had no idea wha...

L.A. Sheriff’s Department could cut 1,000-plus positions amid budget crunch

After a bruising, months-long battle waged in public over its budget, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department could see cuts to its funding amid the region’s dour economic outlook, county budget analysts and department employees say. The Board of Supervisors is to finalize the county’s budget for the next fiscal year on June 29, two days before that year begins. The panel is expected to slash the department’s funding to around $3.3 billion – $200 million less than the year before. That will ...

Comment on any-kind-of-fruit galette by Meredith

I’ve made both your nectarine galette and the blue and red berry galette in the past few weeks! It’s strawberry season here, and a galette is perfect, since I have a dough phobia. I’ve found both recipes to be easy-to-follow and delicious. This post will be my go-to reference from now on – thanks for the notes!

Comment on chicken, leek, and rice soup by Meredith

I made this and my husband declared it the best soup I’ve ever made. I was only a little offended as it was also one of the easier soups I’ve made! My differences: I had 3 cups of parmesan broth left over that I used; I also used 2 cups of chicken bone broth (made a double batch so 8 total cups of chicken stock); the rest of the stock makeup was from a carton. I added carrot and a big spoonful of harissa to the broth so it had a great, slow building spice. Lots of salt is key here. As is the lem...
