Turning the Pages: “Training for the Uphill Athlete”

“Training for the Uphill Athlete ”– Kílian Jornet runs down the Täschhorn, Switzerland. Photo: Steve House For many who read FasterSkier, going uphill remains the name of the game. Although we assume the fidelity to nordic skiing is strong we know many dabble in several outdoor pursuits. Some athletes nordic ski as a means to remain aerobically and anaerobically sharp to parlay their fitness into proud adventures or race efforts far from a PistenBully’s corduroy. In many mountain towns, Creste...

Stephen, Murdoch Fastest Skiers ‘to the Sun,’ Hundreds Revel at Inaugural Event

In a fitting setting for the the inaugural Ski to the Sun Marathon and Relay, hundreds of skiers emerged from a fog-blanketed morning dreamscape in Mazama, Washington as they cruised down the Methow Valley to brilliant sunshine and the finish at Sun Mountain Lodge. Kent Murdoch, who splits his time between Mazama and Fall City, Washington, took advantage of his familiarity with the final climb to lead the marathon field over the 41 km course, passing a fading Liz Stephen in the last kilome...

Tiny houses in the Pacific Northwest

Tiny houses are a growing trend for vacation rentals. They’re very affordable, they can be placed anywhere from a tiny lot in a busy downtown to the middle of a forest, they’re better for the environment, and, of course, they’re incredibly Instagrammable and just as cute as can be. The prototypical tiny house looks pretty much like any house but on a miniature scale; most two-person models feature a kitchen, living room, and bathroom on the ground floor, with the bed housed in a loft space ...

Olson Kundig breathes new life into former RV campground with low-impact huts on wheels

Seattle-based firm Olson Kundig has revamped an old RV campground in Washington’s Methow Valley with a series of wooden huts. According to the architects, the design for the Rolling Huts, which have just 200 square feet of living space, was inspired by Thoreau’s simple cabin in the woods. The minimalist cabins are set on wooden platforms supported by large wheels in order to reduce impact on the landscape. After closing down permanently, the former RV campground was left vacant for years to l...

A New Start For the Methow Valley in its Quest for a Signature Race

Ready, set, go: racers at the start of the skate portion of the 2018 Methow Pursuit. (Photo: Methow Trails) Washington’s Methow Valley is the literal end of the road in winter. There’s one way in from the south.  There’s route 20, a sinuous side spur plunging down from Omak in the Okanogan Highlands to the Methow’s eastern edge. Otherwise, travel by car terminates just beyond Mazama — the small town nestled in the valley’s north.    The Methow’s charm remains its solitude and mellowed pace. ...

Nordic Nation: Sadie Bjornsen and the ‘Sadie System’

The Sadie System, as in the Sadie Bjornsen system, is the topic in this episode of Nordic Nation.  That system involves a basic understanding of how hard and long to train and how to recover effectively, a question many athletes struggle to answer. But Bjornsen, a U.S. Ski Team all-arounder, has overcome chronic foot injuries and arrived on the World Cup scene this year poised for podiums . She has three World Cup podiums so far in the 2017/2018 season and she’ll be competing at her ...

Road Burn Behind Him, Bjornsen Brings On New Season with Heat

U.S. Ski Team B-team member Erik Bjornsen during a rollerski in France this summer 2016. (Courtesy photo) A little less than two months ago, Erik Bjornsen found himself face down , breathing in some combination of medical mattress and bleached bedding. There was a sore tightness in his right shoulder, made all the more difficult to move due to the layers of salved gauze firmly taped to his skin. His training shorts had been modestly rolled down, revealing steak-sized road burns on both of his...

How to Have Fast Skis ALL THE TIME, in EVERY CONDITION

(Original e-blast) How to have fast skis ALL THE TIME and in EVERY CONDITION I love my job. The contact that I have with people in the ski community is pretty much always positive and enjoyable. We have great waxes and other products so of course generally interaction, feedback, and my motivation are very positive. However sometimes at events or otherwise, I have people approaching me trying to get me to guarantee super fast skis if they use a certain wax. A fairly rare thing is also that a pe...

U.S. Thanksgiving Camp Guide: Where The (Skiable) White Stuff Is

Skiing under Liberty Bell on Washington Pass in November, 2016. (Methow Trails courtesy photo) Natural snow is where it’s at, unless there’s none to be found. In high-elevation places like West Yellowstone, Mont., (roughly 6,600 feet above sea level) and Crested Butte (nearly 9,000 feet), November skiing is almost always a given — which is why those venues have hosted Thanksgiving-week ski camps for 16 to 30+ years. And they are again this year, while looking to the skies and weather forecasts ...
