While climate scientists don't anticipate any location to become fully uninhabitable, they worry that some areas will struggle to support human life.  As scientific projections of the impacts of climate change become more robust, the threats of extreme storms, cat...

Miami’s best guava desserts

Pitbull may be known as Mr. Worldwide, but his home city, Miami, is a world unto itself. The Miami-Dade population is more than — around 2.5 million people — with immigrants from Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Haiti, France, Russia, and more. Each of those populations brings a different vibe to Miami’s neighborhoods and food scene. But there’s one addictive flavor that unites all Miamians new and settled: guava. The sticky-sweet fruit was brought to South Florida from Cuba more than 160 years ...

Hey Dude, Where’s My Ballot?

I voted by mail this year, thinking that with such a long ballot the lines might be very long. I posted my ballot at the Post Office on Monday, well before the 1pm pickup scheduled for weekdays. As of this writing, the Miami-Dade elections officials have not received my ballot, at least according to the online lookup tool. Does it really take five days to deliver a letter from the post office in Coral Gables to downtown Miami? And, more worryingly, if by Tuesday afternoon, they still won’t admit...

Florida’s Toxic Algae Crisis Plagues Both Coasts For The First Time In Decades

MIAMI (AP) — Many of Florida’s famous beaches were empty Thursday because of a red tide outbreak that for the first time in decades is plaguing both the Gulf and Atlantic coasts at once. Miami-Dade County closed Haulover Beach — including a popular nudist section — early Thursday and the growing crisis prompted Gov. Rick Scott to announc...

2018 August Ballot Recommendations: Judges

There’s an election on Aug. 28, and vote-by-mail-ballots dropped a week ago so it’s time for me to offer a voter guide. I’m starting with the judicial elections because those are the ones that get the least attention — but they matter. Plus a lot of folks ask me for them, and I’ve come to suspect that these judicial recommendations may be the most (only?) important thing I do on this blog these days. Summary of recommendations Circuit Court Group 8: David Miller (line 131) Group 14: Renee Gord...
