Michael Connelly Starts Writing Before the Sun Comes Up

One of the notable realities of my life, given the topics I write about, is the regularity with which people send me various articles about the work habits of the novelist Michael Connelly. Here’s a representative sample from an interview published in The Daily Beast:  “I get up to write while it’s still dark, 5 or 5:30. I start by editing and rewriting everything I did the day before, and that gives some momentum for the day. I get to new territory when the sun is coming up. I take a break to ...

Lost series info on Kobo Libra

I have several Michael Connelly books from the Harry Bosch detective series. In Calibre they appear to have the series correctly labeled. And when I originally loaded them onto my Kobo Libra, in the device's interface they showed the series names/numbers correctly. But somewhere along the line, all of that series data disappeared from the Libra. I can't say for certain, but it appears to be the only series data that was lost on the device. Trying to fix it, I went into Calibre, deleted the book...

Are we one step closer to the Bosch television universe? Dads everywhere can dream! According to author Michael Connelly, Amazon, the #1 place for Bosch, is looking into developing a Lincoln Lawyer TV series. In Michael Connelly’s books, Mickey Haller, AKA the Lincoln Lawyer, is the half-brother of detective ...

Michael Connelly's imaginary Blue Note albums

Police procedural novelist Michael Connelly is a connoisseur of jazz music so it's no surprise that his most famous character, LAPD detective Hieronymus 'Harry' Bosch, is also a deep enthusiast of the genre. (Connelly has a page on his personal Web site all about the "music in the novels.") Illustrator Russell Walks took those cues and his own penchant for Los Angeles noir and mid-century design to create a terrific series of imaginary Michael Connelly albums released by Blue Note Records. ...

Elite 8 of food institutions in Southern California, an alternate March bracket

Everybody has that one place in Southern California to take out-of-towners to eat, that definitive location that is a local institution for great grub. Try limiting it to a Sweet 16 of those spots the way our team did. Yes, we should’ve started earlier with 64, though we still would’ve ticked off some people with our omissions. Still, we thought you could have a little fun supporting your favorites by voting in a bracket reminiscent of the NCAA Tournament, which we’re all doing without this year...

Search for an Author often fails

Before buying/getting a new eBook, I first do an author search in the Library to see if I already have it. This often fails because a click on the Authors column-heading in Library often responds to the author's first name rather the surname. For example, Jo Nesbo may appear as a 'J', Michael Connelly, as an 'M' and Bernard Cornwell, as a 'B'. As a result, I have sometimes obtained a book only to find, on trying the "Add Books", that I already have it in the library!! Thus, I need to check...

How Steph Cha’s ‘Your House Will Pay’ was inspired by a racially charged shooting and the LA Riots

Author Steph Cha had just finished the third book in her series about Juniper Song, a Korean-American private eye in Los Angeles, when a conversation on the radio captured her attention. The topic under discussion was the case of Latasha Harlins, an African-American teenager shot dead in 1991 in South Los Angeles by a Korean-American shopkeeper named Soon Ja Du. And Cha, 33, was shocked that she’d never heard about the killing. It was, along with the beating of Rodney King two weeks earlier, one...
