The far-reaching effects of mutagens on human health

Mutagenic threats to a cell's subtle machinery may be far more widespread than previously appreciated. In a new study, Michael Lynch and his colleagues demonstrate that DNA mutation itself may represent only a fraction the health-related havoc caused by mutagens. The study highlights the ability of mutagenic compounds to also affect the process of transcription, during which a DNA sequence is converted (or transcribed) to mRNA, an intermediary stage preceding translation into protein.

Together We Can

In 2010 I had more or less stopped making music. I was despondent, negative, and cranky. To anyone who would listen, I complained about other musicians, arts funding, and how much better the European cultural infrastructure was. I’m so glad I’m not there anymore, and want to share what I did to get out of it and some of the results. Things began to shift when my friend, the composer, conductor, and pianist Paul Leavitt, said that I was probably right about my complaints. He suggested that instea...

Ads On The Sydney Opera House? It Corrupts A Public Monument

Regifting ideas: How an obscure idea from animal breeding helps us to understand genome evolution

One of the more satisfying aspects of science is that an often fairly technical or obscure idea from one field can later turn out to be a key guiding principle in another, rather distant, field. One such example is a historical result from the theory of animal breeding that now provides critical insight into the way evolution structures genomes. One of the early observations from DNA sequencing studies was the finding that regions where the rate of gene exchange between chromosomal pairs (recombi...

Scientists explore mysteries behind diversity of DNA composition among species

DNA rules specify that G always pairs with C, and A with T. But, when it's all added up, the amount of G+C vs A+T content among species is not a simple fixed percentage or, standard one-to-one ratio. Michael Lynch's group has now experimentally demonstrated that G+C composition is generally strongly favored by natural selection, regardless of the class of DNA, size of a species' genome, or where the species is found on the evolutionary tree of life.

Clean-cut, can-do Alexander Heffner (never Alex) is twenty-six years old. He went to Harvard. He has high hopes for technology. He has high hopes for journalism. Trump and the Triumph of Pabulum: Why?

In the May 12-May 25, 2016 issue of The New York Review of Books Jeremy Bernstein has a most interesting article entitled "The Trump Bomb" in which he shows how clueless and ignorant Donald Trump is about foreign policy. He mostly refers to the interview Trump gave The New York Times on March 26 in which Trump never answered questions and showed how ignorant he was. Bernstein uses an interesting image to describe the candidate: "He did not seem to know his ass from a wheel." For instance, Trum...

HP-Autonomy saga drags on with London trial scheduled for 2018

The long-running saga between Hewlett- Packard and Autonomy over their $10 billion takeover is set to drag on at least two more years, after lawyers agreed to fight a $5.1 billion-dispute in a London court in 2018. Lawyers for Hewlett-Packard and two former Autonomy executives -- co-founder Michael Lynch and chief financial officer Sushovan Hussain-- appeared in court Thursday to set out their case after both sides filed lawsuits last year.
