Details on Ohio's new ban of juve LWOP and the broader national landscape

As mentioned in this recent post, Ohio recently enacted a new law largely banning life without parole sentences for juveniles.  Daniel Nichanian has this new piece at The Appeal: Political Report about the law and the national develops in this space. I recommend the whole piece, and here are excerpts (with links and the graphic from the original): Ohio is expanding access to parole hearings for people who have been incarcerated ever since they were children.  It will no longer sentence minors t...

Despite this, there is little political will to reorient academic research libraries around electronic materials; attempts to reduce print collections or move them to long-term storage are staunchly opposed by students and faculty who often win their battles...but then fail to patronize the libraries they've saved, a ...

Cannabis Cup and other 4/20 events smaller, but not dead, in era of legal weed

California’s cannabis industry is struggling to transition to a fully regulated marketplace. And those growing pains were evident at the High Times SoCal Cannabis Cup, and similar events, held this weekend to mark marijuana’s unofficial 4/20 holiday. Cannabis Cup, a marijuana festival that attracts thousands of people to San Bernardino’s National Orange Show Events Center each spring, appears to have shrunk significantly but otherwise operated pretty much the same this year as it has in years pa...

New Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Pulls His Predecessor's Commitment on Dash Cams

The new Cuyahoga County Prosecutor, Michael O’Malley says rescinding the half-million-dollar agreement his predecessor had with Cleveland to buy police dash-cams was difficult. But he says his office could not function properly without that money. Before leaving office, former Prosecutor Tim McGinty contributed the money from its trust-fund account to Cleveland. The money comes from forfeitures in criminal convictions. O’Malley says that left only $100,000 in the fund, which he says needs at lea...

Was Michael O'Malley's election to Cuyahoga County prosecutor a call for re-examination of...

Is the degree by which Michael Oa Malley defeated incumbent Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty Tuesday a mandate for Oa Malley to reopen the case of Tamir Rice and seek justice for the death of the 12-year-old at the hands of police? Oa Malley won the Democratic Party primary by a landslide, with more than 55 percent of the vote. That generally does not happen to incumbent Democrats in Cuyahoga County.
