Travel Turns You Into a Liberal Democrat

Apparently, travel makes you a liberal democrat. It’s true. Or, so it seems. I came across this interesting set of comparison maps a while back. One represents the percentages of passport holders by state: Mississippi being at the bottom of the barrel, with only 18% of residents holding passports; New Jersey being at the top of the list with 62% of the population carrying one. The national average, in case you’re interested, hovers around 45 or 46%. The second map breaks down which states voted ...

How 8 Women Learned To Love Their Natural Hair In College

I was raised around cousins and aunts with beautiful, hip-grazing hair. Long, straight hair was a token of a pride for most of the women in my Saint Lucian family. My own hair stretched down to my butt as a child, thanks to the relaxer my mom put in my hair at the age of 9.Once a month, my mom would sit me in the bathtub, paste my scalp with Vaseline (to protect my skin from the burning sensation of the relaxer), and perm my strands. Then, every week she'd blowdry my hair and let me style it f...

Manifest Review – NBC Hopes To Get Found By Getting Lost

It’s hard to avoid comparisons to Lost after taking in NBC‘s Manifest, and while that may pull in a lot of viewers, it also makes it tricky to recommend. The very idea of comparing anything to Lost implies, at the very least, that you don’t know what’s going on, or where things are headed. Worse, Lost ended with a closing season that ultimately negated everything that came before. You can’t watch Lost again, because that’s just an exercise in discovering how nonsensical it all was, and the true ...

Comment on foolproof cacio e pepe by Michaela

Just made this! Worked a dream until I very slightly over-did it with adding the pasta water at the end though. So don’t be like me and just trust that any cheese clumps will melt without water! Even if you do, don’t worry, it will still be scrumptious :)

18 Haircuts Our Editors Are Taking To Their Stylists This Fall

There are few things as refreshing as walking into a salon looking one way, and walking out a totally different person. But the urge to get a complete hair makeover only comes about once — maybe twice — a year. And one of those times is right now on the cusp of fall.Sure, some people may still be holding on to the last few weeks of summer, white-knuckling their way through August. But we're prepared to welcome the autumnal season with a whole new look. For us, fall means a potential new hair c...

The worst employer of 1969

1969. Woodstock. Abbey Road. The Moon Landing. And pregnancy discrimination. Michaela Cornell, a PR publishing professional in Toronto, unearthed the following letter her mom received from her employer after requesting maternity leave. We regret that we must consider your request for Leave of Absence as a termination as of December 31, 1969. This is necessary since our Board does not yet approve maternity leaves. Michaela's tweet of the letter went viral. Among the nearly 500 comments are myr...

Royal wedding front pages from around the world: 'Two people fell in love and we all showed up'

The Prince and his beaming bride exchanged vows in front of 600 guests in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. But the BBC estimated the global audience would reach as many as 1.9 billion people.   This is how the world's media reacted to the royal wedding. DIY Paint: Designer Michaela Scherrer Mixes Her Own Shades of White

It’s easy to detect warm whites and chilly whites, but interior designer Michaela Scherrer sees an entire rainbow in between. This chromatic sensitivity led her to not only dress in shades of white but live entirely in a world of pales. Chez Scherrer is far from one note: Her serene house, which we featured in the Remodelista book (including on the cover), is a study in the many nuances of white. Not surprisingly, getting the paint shades she’s after takes some doing. Like many designers, Michae...

‘HTGAWM’ Season 5 Spoilers: Will Marcus From ‘Scandal’ Join The Show?

Michaela Pratt (Aja Naomi King) really broke Asher Millstone’s (Matt McGorry) heart during the crossover episode of “How to Get Away With Murder” and “Scandal” by sleeping with Marcus Walker (Cornelius Smith Jr.). He broke up with her after that, but it’s clear he still loves her a great deal. However, if Marcus were to be more present in Michaela’s life, then Asher would have a tougher time moving past her infidelity.

The Truth About How We See the Northern Lights

Until I went to Fairbanks Alaska I thought the northern lights were all just hype. No – I haven’t joined a Flat Earth Society or decided Global Warming is a hoax, I just didn’t know if I fully believed in the northern lights. I had good reason to doubt them. Often the Aurora Isn’t What You Expect I had ‘seen’ the aurora twice before – but to my disappointment it was nothing like what I had seen in pictures and videos. There was no color (except from what long exposure photography could capture...

Madonna Will Return to Directing With ‘Taking Flight’

Superstar Madonna is going to give filmmaking another shot with Taking Flight, based on the true story of Michaela DePrince. Madonna’s talent as a musical artist cannot be denied. On top of that, she’s delivered some memorable film performances as well, particularly Desperately Seeking Susan and Dick Tracy. But whenever Madonna steps behind the camera to give filmmaking a try, it doesn’t turn out so well. Her most recent directorial effort was the poorly received W.E., about King Edward VIII...

‘HTGAWM’ Season 4: Michaela ‘Starstruck’ With Annalise Keating, Olivia Pope Working Together

Comment on the great unshrinkable sweet tart shell by Michaela

Hi Deb! Which tart pan do you use? The ones I found in your kitchen FAQ with the link (fat daddio) dont seem to have a 9 inch? I only have a 27cm or 21cm and they’re glass so no removeable bottom. I’d like to get one that I’ll be able to use for most recipes so I’m guessing that should be a 9 inch? The fat daddio listing on amazon has a 9.5 inch is that close enough? Thank you so much if you by any chance find time to give me your opinion here. :)

Big Fish Little Fish – Norway Fishing Then & Now

“Are you a fisherman?” the stranger asked me “No,” I answered quickly, but then hesitated and corrected myself – “well, maybe?” I realized, in the last year, I’ve actually done quite a bit of fishing. I went fishing for the first time in Maine last year and sort of got ‘lured in’…see what I did there? And when I did ice fishing in Alberta a few years ago I loved it; it was a highlight of my time there. Maybe I am a fisherman. Yes, yes, I am a fisherman. Now since I’ve come to grips with that, I ...

Fjord Norway Road Trip

I never really paid much attention to centerlines on roads, until we no longer had one. It’s one of those things you take for granted until it’s gone. The lack of a centerline wasn’t because it was a one-way street, the roads were all two way streets, but they were so narrow there was no reason to have a center line. In fact our ‘roads’ sometimes felt more like little bike paths than roads for cars. When the bright yellow line reappeared back in our lives, we rejoiced; it was as if a long lost f...
