PBOT wants diverters on N Michigan to reduce crashes and cut-through drivers

PBOT sketch of diverters proposed for North Michigan at Skidmore. The rising number of people using cars on our neighborhood streets has many negative impacts. Among them are more crashes caused by people who make dangerous moves out of frustration, selfishness, impatience, or all of the above. One way to combat this is to constrain the driving environment so people have fewer choices and are forced to make safer movements. And that’s exactly what the Portland Bureau of Transportation wants to ...

I drove a $137,000 Corvette ZR1 to see if the most powerful Vette ever is worth the steep price tag — here's the verdict (GM)

The Chevy Corvette ZR1 is the most powerful Vette that General Motors has ever produced. The 755-horsepower ZR1 is surprisingly easy to drive on public roads, but the car has the kind of specs that enable it to shame supercars on a racetrack. I was staggered by the ZR1's power, but I actually found it pleasing for slo-mo cruising. The ZR1 is the pinnacle of Vette-ness — but a new Vette is slated to be revealed on July 18, and it will have a mid-engine design. Visit Business Insider's homepage ...

What to know about UCLA gymnastics in the NCAA championships

LOS ANGELES — The UCLA gymnastics team is two meets away from a second straight national championship. The Bruins barely mentioned that fact this week heading into the NCAA championships in Fort Worth, Texas. “The personality of our team is more about focusing on the little things and focusing on taking one event as a time or taking one skill at a time, even,” junior Gracie Kramer said. “Because we have that mentality, it’s more fun and it’s surprising when the numbers fall into place.” The Brui...

Paul Bunyan's Axe has been busy since Gophers reclaimed it from Badgers

In trying to create demand for a product, scarcity is a wonderful tool. For Gophers athletics, it's an unfortunate byproduct of a football reality — but one administrators are taking full advantage of nonetheless with Paul Bunyan's Axe. The department announced this week a plan for a revamped "Coaches Caravan" at which several high-profile coaches will make four stops around Minnesota. As part of those ticketed events in Owatonna (May 21), Dellwood (May 22), Chaska (May 28) and Alexandria (June ...

Talking to the Miasma

Over the last week I’ve been trying to make sense of what seems to be Democrats’ April funk. Some of this seems directly tied to the completion of the Mueller probe and subsequent refusal to share its findings. But as a number of TPM Reader emails I’ve shared in recent days have shown, it goes beyond that. Some of it is simple fatigue. It is difficult to remain engaged and be buffeted by daily outrages and erosions of the edifice of the state after 30 months. But one thing I’ve been particularly...

Reviewing Ohio's (now-suspended) execution realities

The Cincinnati Enquirer has this lengthy new article headlined "As Ohio struggles to find a painless way to kill death row inmates, is this the end of death penalty?". Here are excerpts: Jeffrey Wogenstahl was supposed to die Wednesday.... But that didn't happen.  Wogenstahl's case began in 1991 when 10-year-old Amber Garrett went missing and was found dead three days later in Indiana.  A jury found him guilty of beating and stabbing the girl to death. Wogenstahl was 31 at the time.  He's 58 no...

Giving Notice: Daughter to Move Out

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: Michigan I have been asking my daughter nicely to move out since August of 2018. Finally I gave her an eviction notice December 1st. Argument preview: When must criminal intent be developed for an unlawful trespass to become a burglary?

Next Wednesday, April 24, the Supreme Court will consider its third Armed Career Criminal Act case of the term, and the second case involving the elements of burglary. Indeed, Quarles v. United States sounds a bit like the previous burglary case, United States v. Stitt. In Stitt, the court opened October Term 2018 with arguments about whether a “generic burglary” for purposes of the ACCA encompasses vehicles as well as structures; eight weeks later they unanimously ruled that it does. Next week,...
