Esquire sparks debate with profile of white teen from Middle America

Esquire's cover story about a 17-year-old white teenager has caused a heated debate on social media. Editor in Chief Jay Fielden said Esquire staffers huddled to discuss what it's like to be a kid these days the idea for a series on 'growing up now' was born. Critics are angry because they feel that documenting the experiences of a 17-year-old boy is unnecessary, while others took to social media to share their outrage over the outrage.

Costco might launch its own streaming service for 'average Americans' to compete with Netflix and Amazon (COST)

Costco has discussed building a video-streaming service geared towards "average Americans," according to a CNBC report.  Mark Greenberg, a TV industry veteran, reportedly held talks with Costco about the streaming service. Greenberg was previously working with Walmart to create a similar service, but talks reportedly fell apart last year.  Amazon has used its streaming service to build customer loyalty, but critics say that the e-commerce giant and Netflix ignore conservative and Middle Americ...

Waldner: What the UCLA basketball empire has taught us

Once upon a time, there was the Roman Empire. That’s ancient history. Another once-upon-a-time involves UCLA basketball. The Bruins, coached by the incomparable John Wooden, won 10 of 12 NCAA championships from 1964 to 1975. In sports, this too is ancient history. Does history indeed help us understand what is going on today? Well, scholars of the professional and amateur variety continue to study the Romans. In similar fashion, their counterparts in sports have been prompted this week to take a...

My Favorite New Travel Destinations of 2018

Every year, I name my favorite new travel destinations. Lots of traditions have come and gone on the site, but I’ve been doing this for six years in a row! 2018 was much more low-key than past years: most of my trips were around 3-5 days or so. That said, I managed to visit seven countries (Japan, Argentina, Netherlands, Lebanon, Cyprus, Austria, and Kenya) in addition to exploring the US. I enjoyed only doing four “big trips” this year: Japan in February (12 days), Antarctica in March (16 days...

Walmart is helping launch original shows, claiming that Netflix and Amazon don't make enough content aimed at its core Middle America shoppers (WMT)

Walmart has struck deals to back original TV shows and other programming that will air on its streaming service, Vudu.  The retailer's streaming videos will be geared towards Walmart's customer base of middle- and lower-income shoppers who don't live in major cities, who Walmart believes to be underserved by current options like Netflix and Amazon. Walmart's emphasis on creating video content to boost existing customers' loyalty has the potential to result in the proliferation of a distinct ne...

This Week in Trailers: Monrovia, Indiana, All Square, Transformer, Tyrel, MFKZ

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week we visit a red state to see how the other half live, gamble on little league, visit some bros for the weekend, find some anime I  wa...

For new Rams corner Marcus Peters, perception is a line often blurred

THOUSAND OAKS – “Perception,” Marcus Peters repeats back, a well-worn sense of indignation in his voice. Over three seasons in Kansas City, as he established himself as the most aggressive and unpredictable corner in the league, that word has been watered down and stripped of meaning. Still, hearing it again leaves a sour taste in his mouth. “Y’all throw perception on it, and it becomes reality for you guys until you get to know us,” he scoffs. This is his first meeting with the media since join...

Best in Show: Vanilla - For Vanilla Lovers Vanilla Haters

Vanilla, known long ago to the native peoples of Middle America, came to win the hearts of gourmands around the world, together with cocoa, upon the "discovery" of America and the New World. Mayas, and later on Aztecs, called vanilla "tlilxochitl" and used it mainly for their royal chocolate drinks. Europeans discovered and came to like vanilla back in the 17th century. They used it as a cure for ... Read full article: Best in Show: Vanilla - For Vanilla Lovers Vanilla Haters from Fragrantica...

The triumph of Trumpism will outlast Trump

Given the endless scandals swarming around him, Donald Trump’s presidency may prove, to quote Thomas Hobbes, to be “nasty, brutish and short.” But even if Trump ends up out of office sooner than planned, we will continue to live in a world shaped by him for years to come. He retains surprisingly high ratings for the economy and keeping the country safe. His perceived successes have allowed him, in a way matched only by Ronald Reagan, to alter American politics, and policy, in ways that could wel...

The damage to the nation that Mueller could do

Until last week, the Robert Mueller investigation had a Kenneth Starr feel to it. Starr was the independent counsel who was supposed to be investigating Bill and Hillary Clinton’s involvement, if any, in an old Arkansas land swindle. Instead, Starr spent five years probing the president before issuing a scathing report documenting Clinton’s lies about his sex life — and a sexual harassment case — resulting in impeachment. Mueller has gone even further afield than Ken Starr, but the investigation...

In Spies Battle, Trump Holds the High Ground

In Spies Battle, Trump Holds the High Ground U.S.A. –-(Ammoland.com)- In backing John Brennan's right to keep his top-secret security clearance, despite his having charged the president with treason, the U.S. intel community has chosen to fight on indefensible terrain.Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper seemed to recognize that Sunday when he conceded that ex-CIA Director Brennan had the subtlety of “a freight train” and his rhetoric had become “an issue in and of itself.”Af...

How to Plan a Weekend Getaway to Cleveland

Ah, Cleveland — after so many years, I finally got to experience you for myself. Cleveland is a curious city. It’s a euphemism for the epitome of Middle America. Sadly, it’s all too often a punchline. And every four years, pundits go crazy over voters in Cuyahoga county, often a bellwether of the presidential election. And then 30 Rock broadcast its iconic “Cleveland” episode. Liz Lemon’s boyfriend Floyd brings her to his hometown and she discovers a utopia where people think she’s a model, the...

Are Globalists Plotting a Counter-Revolution? Walmart reportedly recruits ex-Epix CEO in bid to build video service

According to new reports, Walmart has enlisted the services of Mark Greenberg to help build a subscription video streaming service. Rumors have been floating around for some time now, that the retailer is looking to go head to head with the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime video, and Greenberg — who left the role of CEO at Epix in September — is well-positioned to help. The service would reportedly function apart from Vudu, the a la carte video service Walmart purchased in 2010, as a bid to...

As the cost of a college education creeps higher and the student debt crisis grows more pressing, there are lots of people brainstorming and developing educational programs that offer an alternative to college. This is especially true in the tech sector, where numerous code schools and bootcamps have popped up in an effort to teach young people the skills they’ll need to land good jobs, with or without a university education. Why Hip Hop Belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

I can pinpoint the moment I became a hip-hop fan. It was October 1994 and I was 10 years old. I was returning from a school field trip to the Bunker Hill Monument, and the boys kept yelling at the bus driver, “One, two, three — NINETY-FOUR POINT FIVE!” Any Bostonian will immediately recognize that number as Jam’n 94.5 — Boston’s hip-hop station. The bus driver ignored the boys’ shouts for music. But I didn’t. As soon as I came home, I brought a radio into my room, turned it to 94.5, and felt my...

The Democratic Party’s Christian Problem

The Democratic Party's Christian Problem U.S.A. –-(Ammoland.com)- People on the left are outraged when you question their patriotism, their dedication to the nation as founded and their respect for the Constitution as originally written, but they continually vindicate our concerns. The most recent example is the left's unhinged mania at Judge Amy Coney Barrett's inclusion on President Trump's list of potential Supreme Court appointees. In times of perceived crisis — and this is certainly one of...

Today,  Kali VanBaale is reading an excerpt from her recently released novel The Space Between. Kali is also t he author of the novel The Good Divide. Fentanyl Bust Reveals How Mexican Drug Cartels Are Infiltrating Middle America

The war against Mexican drug cartels pushing lethal opioids in have been dealt a blow in a “good bust” by a south Ohio drugs task force. A 20-pound cache of fentanyl, capable of killing millions of people, was seized, according to Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine. Four men, three from Mexico, were arrested on drugs charges and held in the Montgomery County jail. DeWine said the arrests were part of an ongoing investigation into a Mexican drug cartel.
