Suburb Staid No More: A California-French Family Remake a Bay Area House

When we first met Stéphanie Ross several years ago, she had a hint of plaster dust in her hair. That was at Remodelista’s San Francisco Market, where she was showing her children’s clothing line, Les Petits Carreaux (now available at Anthropologie and in some women’s sizes, too). At the time, she had just about finished resuscitating her family’s apartment near the Champs-Élysées—we took a tour and immediately featured it: see A Grand but Understated Flat in Paris. And she was also getting start...

10 Easy Pieces: Best 24-Inch Counter-Depth Refrigerators

If you’re dealing with a kitchen full of tight corners, the depth of a refrigerator is just as important as its width. What you need is a slender 24-inch wide counter-depth fridge; counter-depth meaning 24 to 29 inches deep (to stand flush with standard 24- and 25-inch cabinets). Essentially, measurements are around 24 by 24 by…however tall your fridge stands. Here are 10 of our favorite models—all with depth measurements that include doors and handles. (N.B.: Looking for wider but just as flush...

10 Easy Pieces: Best Canister Vacuums for Small Spaces

The beauty of the canister vacuum? If you have, say, 20 inches of storage space, you can keep your dust-busting, allergen-eliminating machine well out of sight. While the upright vacuum is another option (see our post 10 Easy Pieces: Compact Upright Vacuums for Small Spaces), most of us at Remodelista prefer the canister style for the sake of storability. Here are our 10 favorites; just in time for that New Year/New You spring cleaning job. Above: The Miele Compact C1 Pure Suction Vacuum is d...

Why spiritual people are more likely to embrace capitalism than materialists

Why spiritual people are more likely to embrace capitalism than materialists In his 1993 book The Catholic Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, the late Christian philosopher Michael Novak wrote that certain cultures are more likely to favor capitalism. Among them were the following: Confucian, Jewish, Protestant, and Northern European Catholic. These cultures, Novak argued, possessed certain commonalities that made them more likely to engage in capitalism ...

I need a new kitchen

Need perhaps is a very strong word. My current kitchen is adequate but also has some serious failings as I like to cook and entertain. Lots. Naturally I’ve started boring my friends about this until finally my mate James introduced me to Chelsea Hing to come up with a new design. My plan I pitched to Chelsea is that I write about the process of designing, our inspiration, selecting appliances and finishes, and building a new kitchen in excruciating detail in exchange for a design. So here goes...

We need to talk about...

...vacuum cleaners, I hope you don't mind. Invented in the 1860s apparently, with the first motorised version appearing by the turn of the century.  I can remember us having a Goblin, and then an upright Hoover with a sort of cloth bag that inflated rather ominously and concealed a paper bag which would regularly split. I can hear the deep throaty noise it would make even now and the fact it weighed a ton. We have been through that many vacuum cleaners in our time too. Old hand-me-down Hoovers...

Hudson Eclectic: An Artist’s Circa-1830 Home in Claverack, New York

My favorite detail in Helen Dealtry and Dan Barry’s 1830 house in Claverack, New York: two delicate, oval-shaped pieces of honeycomb in a small pink bowl. When I moved the honeycomb into the light, in front of a window, for a shot, my hands came away sticky. Photographer Alison Engstrom and I had taken the morning train north, from New York to Hudson, to capture the couple’s eclectic house and gardens; the honeycomb, they told me, was from their neighbor, a landscape designer who had designed th...

Miele oven with steam injection

Miele oven with steam injection Submitted by Tonz57 on July 12, 2018 - 12:25pm. I’m having trouble figuring how to use the steam feature in my new Miele oven. I got good results in conventional ovens but the variables in my new oven is a real learning curve. Two main questions is how many minutes before the steam adversely effects the crust and whether I should bake with convection (at a lower temp).

The New Yorker: A 400-Square-Foot West Village Apartment, Thoughtfully Redone by a Young Architect

Here’s one to watch: Daisy Ames, a tennis player-turned-architect, who toured Europe playing professionally before graduating from the Yale School of Architecture, then launching a studio of her own, New York-based Studio Ames, last year. Among the firm’s first projects: a 400-square-foot one-bedroom on the second floor of a townhouse in New York’s West Village. “The building was, at one point, a single-room-occupancy dwelling for sailors who would dock along the Hudson River a few blocks away,”...

GOING GREEN. Schlachtwerk’s ‘Wasabi’ Kawasaki W650 Sprint Racer

Written by Marlon Slack Insanity comes in many forms. It can be the drooling, yelping, crud-caked guy shouting at street lamps outside your 7/11 at three in the morning. It can be cruel megalomania, bright static head noise or political psychopathy. Kitchen of the Week: The Updatable Kitchen from Stilleben Kitchen in Copenhagen

Designing a kitchen is like deciding on a tattoo: What if you change your mind down the line? Founders of Copenhagen shop Stilleben, Ditte Reckweg and Jelena Schou, were obsessed with the idea of creating an updatable kitchen “to survive many styles and color trends.” They teamed up with architect Trine Hjorth and cabinetmaker Ditlev Rahbek of HjorthRahbek to come up with a series of no-nonsense kitchens—practical and solid, but also fun. The kitchens are made up of a basic core design with hand...

Kitchen of the Week: A Glamorous Kitchen in San Francisco, Ikea Hacks Included

A couple of months ago, Michelle emailed me to tell me about her friend Amy Lindburg’s recently remodeled kitchen in San Francisco. “It’s very original,” she wrote. “A mix of high and low, Ikea and crystal.” So a couple of weeks ago we headed over to document the project, which is full of brilliant ideas to steal. As Michelle says, “Anyone who knows Amy knows she is extremely effective. And daring. She was a hardware engineer at Apple at a time when there were practically no female engineers any...

Expert Advice: An Architect’s 15 Essential Tips for Designing the Kitchen

With more than 50 kitchen projects under his belt, Jerome Buttrick of Buttrick Projects (formerly Buttrick Wong Architects) is a veteran of kitchen design. One of those designs was for Julie’s Mill Valley, California, kitchen, which serves as an ongoing testament to his thoughtfulness on how to create a meaningful space in what has become the hub of the modern home. 10 Easy Pieces: Ceiling-Mounted Kitchen Range Hoods

If you’ve survived a kitchen remodel, you might remember that choosing a vent hood is one of the least exciting (but crucial) parts of the process. And if your kitchen has a cooktop or range located in a central location, i.e. an island, your choice becomes more important, since the hood will become a visual focal point. When it comes to ceiling-mounted vent hoods, the canopy should extend past the perimeter of the cooktop. Most of the styles we show here are convertible: They can be either vent...
