10 Breathtaking Lake Louise Hikes, Banff National Park

Lake Louise hikes are some of the best you’ll find in Banff National Park – and even Canada. Superlative mountain and alpine lake scenery is the reward for your efforts. The downside to most but not all of the Lake Louise hikes are the sheer number of people on the popular trails – especially Lake Agnes and the Plain of Six Glaciers.  If you can do it, book accommodation somewhere close to Lake Louise so you can spend more time hiking than driving. Then over three or four days knock off any nu...

Two Yosemites: Either wild or accessible

By Joe Mathews The shuttle bus to Mariposa Grove in Yosemite National Park wasn’t running. Would the Three Stooges — my sons, ages 10, 8 and 5 — agree to a 2 ½-mile uphill hike to see Yosemite’s signature sequoias? This month I made my first trip to Yosemite as a father, wondering if my city slicker boys — they like reading, coffee shops and riding the L.A. Metro — could handle a visit to the Sierra wilderness. I shouldn’t have worried. Today’s Yosemite has been changed so much by record crowds,...

Best winter day trips near NYC

Winter in New York City can be brutal; temperatures can drop into the negatives, and you’re likely to see people resembling the Michelin man with all the layers they’ve packed on. While there are plenty of activities to do within the five boroughs during this time of year, such as outdoor sports or cozying up somewhere to avoid the cold, sometimes you just need to get away and maybe even see some real, clean snow. Luckily, the Big Apple is in a great location with easy access to other places...

"Exactly one 'toc' nav element must be present"

Hi, folks. I'm working on some code for a client which crates EPUB 3 files. The books are working fine in iBooks and Calibre, but now we're trying to upload the file to Google's book store and getting stuck with the lingering error: "EPUB/toc.xhtml:2, 203: Error while parsing file 'Exactly one 'toc' nav element must be present'." But there is most definitely exactly one 'toc' nav element in the TOC file, and it matches the spec in other ways as well, as far as I can tell. I presume there's som...

Shove Off: Utah’s Best Places to Paddleboard

The roaring hum of snowmelt tumbling off Utah’s mountainsides in May and June always triggered a sense of helplessness in my winter-obsessed self. As the melted snow departed the slopes and fled downhill, the realization that ski season was over caused a depth of unease. Of all Utah’s resorts, typically posts the latest closing day in June, after which I was left to bide the next five months waiting for winter’s frigid return. It’s true, I dreaded and very much disliked the summer months; peopl...

Delays as Music

As I wrote in my previous post, I view performing with “live sound processing” as a way to make music by altering and affecting the sounds of acoustic instruments—live, in performance—and to create new sounds, often without the use of pre-recorded audio. These new sounds, have the potential to forge an independent and unique voice in a musical performance. However, their creation requires, especially in improvised music, a unique set of musicianship skills and knowledge of the underlying acousti...

Rant from the road: resort horticulture by Elizabeth Licata

Mirbeau Vacations are always busmens’ holidays for gardeners. Whether it’s a tropical paradise, a stateside resort, or a European capital, gardeners can’t help but notice what’s planted, where it’s planted, and how well it’s designed. We don’t actually work on the gardens where we stay, but we’re doing it in our heads. Over the past week, I’ve been on holiday in New York state: Skaneateles, Clayton (1000 Islands), Lake Placid, Saratoga Springs, and Geneva, on a more-or-less circular itinerary. ...

9 watersports in Lake Placid, NY

1. It’s called Mirror Lake for a reason. Photo: Neil Kremer The town of Lake Placid is located deep in the Adirondack Mountains, a far cry from the urban hubbub you typically picture when you hear the words “New York.” As you head out of the bustle of the city and make the drive north into the shadows of the yellow birch and red spruce lining the shores of the area’s thousands of lakes and ponds, you’ll probably find yourself itching to get out on all that water.
