Former Angels employee Eric Kay charged in connection with death of Tyler Skaggs

A longtime Angels public relations employee was charged on Friday with conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, the drug found in Tyler Skaggs’ system when the former Angels pitcher died last year. Eric Kay has been arrested and appeared in Federal Court in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday morning, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of Texas. If convicted, Kay faces up to 20 years in federal prison. “Tyler Skaggs’s overdose – coming, as it did, in the midst of ...

Twins TV ratings on Fox Sports North are up 47% over last year

Conventional wisdom said that fans would consume sports in large quantities on TV once they returned in 2020 after a months-long drought and with in-person attendance wiped out by the coronavirus pandemic. So far, in an early sample size of Major League Baseball regional sports networks, that notion is proving to be true. Forbes has the numbers for the 29 U.S.-based MLB teams through July 30 — just a handful of games, but still a useful early snapshot (the Canada-based Blue Jays were not include...

A’s Coach Apologizes For Apparent Nazi Salute

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Oakland Athletics bench coach Ryan Christenson has apologized for raising his arm during a postgame celebration in what looked like a Nazi salute. Christenson made the gesture while greeting closer Liam Hendriks following the A’s 6-4 win over the Texas Rangers on Thursday. Hendriks immediately pushed Christenson’s arm down and cameras then showed him laughing and briefly raising his arm a second time. Christenson faced criticism after video of the gesture circulated on soc...

Martin Kaymer checks his highlight film, makes another one at PGA Championship

You can call this a comeback. He hasn’t been here for years. Not even Martin Kaymer could easily recognize the fellow who was the No. 1 golfer in the world, who won the PGA Championship 10 years ago and ran away with the U.S. Open six years ago, who drilled the winning putt for Europe in the 2012 Ryder Cup and won the Players Championship in 2014. But he was quite familiar with his lookalike, the one who spent a forlorn week as an alternate to the Open Championship field at Royal Portrush and ne...

Murphy’s Pinch-Hit HR Lifts Rockies Over Giants 6-4

DENVER (AP) – Daniel Murphy hit a two-run, pinch-homer during a five-run seventh inning to lead the Colorado Rockies over the San Francisco Giants 6-4 on Thursday. Trevor Story and Charlie Blackmon also homered for the Rockies to spoil Tyler Anderson’s return to Coors Field. Anderson was Colorado’s opening day starter in 2019, but knee surgery in June ended his season after going 0-3 with an 11.76 ERA. The Giants picked him up off waivers in October, and Thursday was his second start in four gam...

Parenthood’s changed perspective has been good for Dodgers A.J. Pollock

A.J. Pollock had an awful lot on his plate over the past several months. A lot of it had nothing to do with baseball. Maddi Mae Pollock was born on March 19, arriving three months premature and setting off a 130-day stress test for her parents of “home-hospital, home hospital,” as A.J. put it. In June, the anxiety was ratcheted even higher for the first-time father when he contracted COVID-19 and had to quarantine at home for most of two weeks, staying away from both Maddi and his wife, Kate. Angels top prospect Jo Adell sits because of quad tightness

Jo Adell was out of the Angels lineup on his third day in the big leagues because of some quad tightness, although Manager Joe Maddon gave no indication it will be more than a one-day issue. “I don’t think so,” Maddon said Thursday. “The trainers didn’t express anything more than that, so as of right now I’m not concerned.” Adell’s first day on the big league bench came a day after he had trouble on two balls in right field, demonstrating the defensive issues that were largely the reason he wasn...

With his pitching season over, Angels’ Shohei Ohtani takes the long view

Shohei Ohtani’s reaction to the end of his 2020 season was steeped in perspective. “This time it’s not as severe as when I needed Tommy John surgery,” Ohtani said through his interpreter on a Zoom call with reporters Wednesday. “It’s just a little inflammation in the elbow. I’m trying to get back on the mound.” Ohtani was told not to throw for 4-6 weeks Monday after an MRI revealed a grade 1-2 strain of the flexor pronator mass. He’s likely to be limited to designated hitter duties the remainder...

Belt’s 3-Run Homer Lifts Giants Over Rockies 4-3

DENVER (AP) — Brandon Belt extended his success against Colorado starter Jon Gray with a three-run homer and a double to lead the San Francisco Giants past the Rockies 4-3 on Wednesday night. Belt’s two hits raised his career average against Gray to .417 (10 for 24) and helped Logan Webb (1-0) get his first win in his fourth start of the season. Dodgers defend decision-making with top prospect Gavin Lux

The reigning Minor League Player of the Year, as determined by Baseball America, the Dodgers’ Gavin Lux came into spring training seen by many as a strong candidate to not only be the their primary second baseman, but also to make a run at the franchise’s 19th National League Rookie of the Year award. As camp progressed, however, it became apparent the Dodgers did not see Lux as a lock to open the season on their roster, and that raised questions about service-time manipulation — a frequent mane...

Angels ride early homers from Mike Trout, Albert Pujols to victory

If Tuesday marked a new start for the Angels, it was a good one. After losing seven of their first 10 games, the Angels had an off day and returned with Mike Trout and uber prospect Jo Adell together in the outfield. They have a rotation no longer clinging to the hope of Shohei Ohtani and a new bullpen mix. It added up to a 5-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners, with Trout hitting a homer and Adell an infield single in his first big league at-bat. They helped provide enough support for Andrew He...

Piscotty Hits A’s 2nd Walkoff Slam This Year, Beats Rangers

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Stephen Piscotty hit Oakland’s second walkoff grand slam of the year and the Athletics beat the Texas Rangers 5-1 Tuesday night for their fourth straight win. The late-game theatrics helped the A’s win on a night when prized pitching prospect Jesus Luzardo pitched five scoreless innings in his first career start for Oakland and Texas starter Lance Lynn allowed first run of the season. Edinson Volquez (0-1) got into trouble quickly in the ninth inning when he walked two bat...

Márquez Strikes Out 9, Rockies Beat Giants 5-2

DENVER (AP) – Germán Márquez struck out nine in efficiently throwing into the eighth inning and benefited from an overturned home-run call as the rolling Colorado Rockies beat the San Francisco Giants 5-2 on Tuesday night. The Rockies moved to 8-2 for the second time in franchise history, joining a 2011 team that finished 73-89. Trailing 3-0 in the fifth, the Giants thought they tied it on a three-run homer by Steven Duggar that hit off the top of the wall. A crew chief review overturned the cal...

It’s official: Shohei Ohtani won’t pitch again for the Angels this season, but he can still hit

Joe Maddon officially declared what the calendar had made likely a day earlier about Shohei Ohtani. “I’m not anticipating him pitching at all this year,” the Angels manager said Tuesday afternoon, officially putting an end to Ohtani as a two-way player in 2020. Ohtani will still be able to serve as a nearly full-time DH, although Maddon didn’t put him in the lineup on Tuesday because he said he’s still “a little bit sore.” Ohtani was diagnosed on Monday with a grade 1-2 strain of the flexor pron...
