Walker Zimmerman scores game-winning goal as LAFC defeats Real Salt Lake

The Los Angeles Football Club knew what was in store for them as Real Salt Lake, the team that bounced them from the MLS Cup playoffs last year, returned to the Banc of California Stadium on Saturday. For 90 plus minutes RSL again managed to frustrate a home team. Then a flash of brilliance from an unlikely source, defender Walker Zimmerman alleviated the angst that accumulated amongst the 22,023 people in attendance when he hammered a stoppage-time game-winner from outside the box, putting LAFC...

For LAFC, beating Real Salt Lake wouldn’t be ‘payback’ as much as soothing playoff wounds

LOS ANGELES — Three goals. Two shots on target. One brutal end to the season. For the first time since yanking the rug out from underneath the Los Angeles Football Club in the knockout round of the 2018 MLS Cup playoffs, Real Salt Lake returns to Banc of California Stadium. “Silencing any away crowd is always a good feeling,” RSL starting defender Aaron Herrera said. LAFC embraced the upset loss as the club prepared this week. “It’s payback time,” said Latif Blessing, LAFC’s excitable Ghanian wh...

Berhalter starts 3-0 as US beats Ecuador 1-0 on fluke goal

Gregg Berhalter's vision for the U.S. national team started to unfold as the Americans passed the ball from side to side, played diagonal balls long and short. Gyasi Zardes's shot from about 25 yards deflected off a defender, looped over a 6-foot-5 goalkeeper and ricocheted in off the crossbar in the 81st minute, giving the U.S. a 1-0 exhibition win over Ecuador on Thursday night. Failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup was followed by a year of debuts and drift under interim coach D...

Oh dear...

I keep over all the possible reasons this sort of specific mistake could be made multiple times, and none of them are a good color. Nobody else in @MLS is shocked by this?!#IMFC fans ordered jerseys on the official website, but they received @WhitecapsFC jerseys... Right names, wrong team. Incredible. I've received messages from 5 different fans claiming the same thing had happened to them. [Author: Greg Seltzer]

Way Out West

Surprise, surprise, I'm late upon late with this. Don't take it as a lack of interest. I am very much looking forward to two races in the Western Conference - the one for the top three spots and the one for the last three playoff berths. Both should be highly entertainingSeattleJust so you know, this pick is not a reaction to their start - I had this order of finish worked out back on opening day [Author: Greg Seltzer]

LAFC plays New York to another 2-2 draw at Yankee Stadium

Playing in Los Angeles or New York, it makes no difference. Twice the Los Angeles Football Club and the New York City Football Club have met, and twice the results have been the same. The teams clashed at Yankee Stadium on Sunday and, as they had last May at Banc of California Stadium, the 90-minute contest delivered a high-octane 2-2 draw. On the back of LAFC’s captain Carlos Vela’s two goals, the Black & Gold wiped away two New York leads off of goals from Alexandru Mitrita and Alexander Ring....

Another work in progress... still.

It's been a busy week around here, but now the soccer weekend has arrived. That means I'm going to finally complete the current Clipboard (now) and my MLS season predictions (West tomorrow and awards on Monday). So... the fullback slots. The place where my hope constantly lives, because, let's get real, it's most needed there. The guys at these positions really need to come up and come through. [Author: Greg Seltzer]

Red Bulls rally past Quakes, 4-1

The New York Red Bulls rallied from a scoreless first half to rout the visiting San Jose Earthquakes 4-1 on Saturday afternoon. LAFC ready to play ball vs. NYCFC at Yankee Stadium

The New York City Football Club took a well-earned point last year in their debut at Los Angeles’ newly minted cathedral of soccer. Ahead of its first away match of 2019, the Los Angeles Football Club appear primed to do better than a draw inside NYCFC’s sporting house of worship. Despite repeated calls for a soccer-only facility to be constructed somewhere within New York City’s five boroughs, a club dubbed the Pigeons has nested on the grounds of the new Yankee Stadium since 2015. Having watch...

Galaxy, minus Zlatan Ibrahimovic, try to pick up the slack on offense

The depth of the forward position has long been a concern for the Galaxy. Things were magnified when Ola Kamara was sold to Shenzhen in the Chinese Super League, posing the all-important question of what happens if Zlatan Ibrahimovic is forced out of action. Well, that moment is now and the Galaxy is searching for answers. Ibrahimovic, who missed last week’s 2-0 loss to FC Dallas due to an issue with his Achilles, will also be out for Saturday’s meeting with Minnesota United FC (7:30 p.m.; Spect...

Mexico’s Liga MX still rules in rivalry with MLS

ATLANTA (AP) — When the final whistle blew, Atlanta United half-heatedly celebrated a moral victory. That’s all they had. Jordan Henderson spotted breaking a Jurgen Klopp superstition

Footage of Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson touching the famous ‘This is Anfield’ sign at the Reds’ home ground has been garnering plenty of attention online. Henderson’s stint 28-year-old midfielder Henderson is Liverpool’s longest-serving player. The English international has been on the books of the Reds since 2011, when he made the move to Anfield from Sunderland. And, despite splitting opinion among the club’s fanbase, Henderson has nevertheless gone on to establish himself as a key per...

Vela, LAFC too much for visiting Portland Timbers

Last-minute heroics were not needed Sunday night at Banc of California Stadium. Instead, the Los Angeles Football Club throttled their rivals from the Pacific Northwest, the Portland Timbers, 4-1, securing two wins in as many tries at home in a perfect start to the 2019 campaign. A pair of goals in each half came by way of LAFC’s execution and energy. LAFC controlled the first quarter hour before an entertaining opening half gave way to action on both ends of the pitch. Shorthanded Galaxy falls 2-0 to FC Dallas

FRISCO, Texas — Playing without Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romain Alessandrini, the Galaxy lacked the firepower to hang with host FC Dallas in a 2-0 loss Saturday. The Galaxy (1-1-0) traveled without their two star Designated Players, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic is nursing an Achilles injury and Alessandrini has an injured right hamstring. Reto Ziegler opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, beating goalkeeper David Bingham with a penalty kick into the left corner. The Galaxy’s Diego Polenta conceded the p...

Adama Diomande ready for more as LAFC hosts Portland

As far as Adama Diomande in concerned, putting his laces to a ball and seeing it rocket toward the back of the net is simply a normal part of being a striker. “I know my qualities,” the 29-year-old Norwegian center forward said this week after his laser, the latest goal in Banc of California Stadium history, lifted the Los Angeles Football Club to a dramatic season-opening 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City. Joining LAFC three months into the club’s inaugural year following a transfer from Hull C...

Best spring break trips in the US

You don’t have to do five-story beer bongs off a beachfront balcony to have a great spring break. Though let’s be honest, it’s a better story if you do. The annual respite from school and work that runs from the beginning of March to mid-April is one of the great American traditions, where college kids create memories they won’t remember, and families finally have time for some peace and quiet. Even if you can’t afford a week of debauchery in Mexico or a family jaunt to Europe, each state has...

Joe Corona joins Galaxy as injury concerns mount ahead of game at FC Dallas

The Galaxy is only in Week 2 of the new season, but the team’s depth is already being tested. Midfielder Romain Alessandrini will be sidelined for Saturday’s game at FC Dallas and for the next couple of weeks as he deals with a hamstring injury that he suffered last week. Zlatan Ibrahimovic said Sunday that he felt something in his Achilles. Whatever it was, it kept him off of the training field this week and will keep him out of the lineup, at least for Saturday’s game. The news isn’t all bad, ...
