WeWork paid over $2 million to a woman who threatened to expose claims of sex, illegal drugs and discrimination in a horrifying 50-page document

In the spring of 2018, a woman who once worked in WeWork's real estate business sent the company a 50-page document alleging drug use, sexual harassment and pay discrimination. The document, which set out the terms of a threatened lawsuit, was obtained by Business Insider. The allegations risked disrupting WeWork's meteoric rise and a planned fundraising, and sparked a flurry of activity as senior leaders sought to verify which, if any, of the claims were true.  With at least one external law ...

Richard Turner — The Magical Phenom Who Will Blow Your Mind (#411)

“Practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.” — Richard Turner I am very, very excited to introduce this interview, as I’ve been wanting to meet today’s guest, Richard Turner, for almost two years now. I first came across Richard Turner (richardturner52.com, youtube.com/richardturner52) in the documentary Dealt, directed by Luke Korem. I can’t remember the last time I finished a documentary, only to want to watch it again immediately afterward. I also can’t remember a do...

Exploring the Many Hurdles That Pixar’s ‘Monsters Inc.’ Faced on the Road to the Big Screen

(Infinity and Beyond  is a regular bi-weekly column documenting the 25-year filmography of Pixar Animation Studios, film by film. In today’s column, writer Josh Spiegel highlights Monsters, Inc .) Thursday, November 1, 2001 ought to have been a very exciting day for Pete Docter. The stalwart Pixar animator, writer, and director was just hours away from a true milestone: the first feature film bearing his name as director was going to be released in theaters nationwide. It would be the fourth...

Comment on grapefruit yogurt cake by Molly

I made this recipe today because it sounded amazing, but the texture turned out all wrong. It was very spongy and rubbery but I’m not quite sure why. I followed it to a tee except I used whole fat Greek yogurt in place of regular. Anyone have idea on why it turned out that way, or is the cake texture suppose to be kinda spongy (compared to a pound cake or sweet bread)? It was honestly very unpleasant I can’t imagine it was correct. I live at a very high altitude buts it’s never been an issue w...

Ryan Holiday — Turning the Tables (#410)

Welcome to The Tim Ferriss Show! It is — usually — my job to sit down with world-class performers of all different types to tease out the habits, routines, favorite books, and so on that you can apply and test in your own life. This time we have a “turning the tables” episode. What does that mean? Well, I will not be the one doing the interviewing. Instead, I will be the one being interviewed by my friend, Ryan Holiday. So who is this Ryan fella? Ryan Holiday (TW/IG: @RyanHoliday) is one of ...

Comment on broccoli melts by Molly

WOW. This is so good! I made a few changes to simplify this because I am just the laziest – chopped the broccoli (& some mushrooms because I had them) in a food processor until they were pretty finely chopped but not minced, then cooked the whole thing by heating up olive oil, adding garlic until golden, adding a big pinch of red pepper flakes for 15 seconds or so then adding in the mushrooms until soft, then the broccoli. I put in a bit of water to steam it in the pan, but this way it’s one le...

‘The Roads Not Taken’ Trailer: Elle Fanning Tries to Connect With Her Ailing Father, Javier Bardem

“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,” writes Robert Frost in his famous poem. “And sorry I could not travel both.” Frost’s beloved poem ponders the ideas of choice and self-determination with a devastatingly simple metaphor. The upcoming feature film starring Javier Bardem and Elle Fanning grapples with those same concepts, in a slightly more complicated way. The Roads Not Taken is a film directed by British auteur Sally Potter that follows a daughter (Fanning) who takes her ailing father (Bar...

Comment on blueberry crumb cake by Molly

It’s that time of winter when I realize several days have gone by and I’ve not eaten a single piece of fruit. And the Costco-size bags of frozen berries leftover from summer smoothies definitely aren’t getting any fresher. And my expired-in-January buttermilk ought to be used or trashed. And I want dessert. I got pretty annoyed at how difficult this was to stir once I added 3 cups of frozen berries and the whole thing basically turned the consistency of hard-frozen ice cream. But I managed ...

11 Reasons Not to Become Famous (or “A Few Lessons Learned Since 2007”)

November of 2008. I had more hair, a flip phone, and absolutely no idea what was coming. “Let the cymbals of popularity tinkle still. Let the butterflies of fame glitter with their wings. I shall envy neither their music nor their colors.” – John AdamsLetters of John Adams: Addressed to His Wife “If I’m not famous by 30, I might as well put a bullet in my head.” That’s an actual sentence I spoke to one of my closest friends. Almost famous: Bullied young Irvine rocker and his band get breaks that could launch them to stardom

On a recent Tuesday, in the middle of science class at Irvine High, a student interrupted an otherwise normal lesson by shouting a triumphant profanity. “Holy (expletive),” the kid said. He had received a text message from his dad that made him leap from his desk and jump around the classroom in celebration. His teacher, obviously stunned, confronted the disruptor. A trip to detention was about to be handed out. Here’s what was going on: A rock ‘n’ roll moment was about to happen. “They’re going...

Molly Joyce: Strength in Vulnerabilty

One of the hallmarks of many different kinds of music performance—whether it’s a classical piano recital, a jazz combo in a club, or an arena rock show—is the demonstration of extraordinary physical feats on musical instruments. A cult of virtuosity has perpetuated the belief that the harder something is to play, and hence the fewer people who are able to play it, the better the music, and that the rare specimens of humanity who are able to play such music have special superhuman powers. At the ...
