UCLA baseball eliminated from Lubbock Regional

LUBBOCK, Texas – For two games, UCLA did just about everything right to fight back from a first-round loss at the Lubbock Regional. With another chance to push the season to a decisive Monday showdown, though, the Bruins couldn’t sustain their success against host Texas Tech. UCLA’s bats went dormant, and the Red Raiders rattled two of the Bruins’ best relief pitchers in the first five innings on the way to an 8-2 victory at Dan Law Field. The loss ends the season for UCLA (37-20), which plowed ...

UCLA’s budget mess: Blame Dan Guerrero all you want, but there’s nuance to the shortfall

Dan Guerrero has been UCLA’s athletic director for 6,496 days. For the first 6,483, there were no cracks — no publicly visible cracks, at least — in the Bruins’ fiscal armor. Then, two weeks ago, came the revelation of a plunge into the red: An $18.9 million budget shortfall in the 2019 fiscal year that would be covered by an interest-bearing loan from campus and a projected $17 million shortfall in the 2020 fiscal year. Guerrero, who’s retiring this spring after 18 years in charge, is under hea...

UCLA athletics reported a whopping $18.9 million deficit for the 2019 fiscal year, according to a statement of revenues and expenses submitted to the NCAA and obtained by the Hotline. The Bruins generated $108.4 million in revenue against $127.3 million in expenses for the 12-month per...
