Awaken Our Souls this Lent

By: Jason M. Schreder The days of Lent recall Jesus’ time in the desert (Matthew 4:1-11) where he fasted, prayed and was “tested” in preparation for his mission as the Messiah to heal the broken wounds of Israel, to bring the Kingdom of God into the world, and to defeat the enemies of Israel through a self-emptying love on the Cross (CCC 538-540). It is meant for us to go into our own “desert” to reflect on our own humanity and see through the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and alms giving...

Why Do Some People Wish the Attack on Smollett Happened?

The reactions of many on the left to the case of Jussie Smollett prove two important things: 1. There is little racism in America. 2. The Left -- white and black -- is morally and psychologically impaired. There is no doubt that most Americans on the left, including black Americans, are distraught over the fact that Smollett faked the “racist” attack on him. Apparently leftists, Democratic leaders, and, most depressingly, many of his fellow blacks wish Smollett had been attacked by white racist...

"I doubted Jussie Smollett. It breaks my heart that I might be right."

Writes Nana Efua Mumford, "the executive assistant to The [Washington] Post’s editorial board."I can't understand why anyone would want to admit that they're happier to know that a racist, homophobic violent attack took place than that one person told a big lie.I wanted to believe Smollett. I really did. I know that there is a deep, dark racist history in Chicago and, if proved true, this would be just one more point on the list. I wanted to believe him with every fiber of my being, most of all ...

Indie Labels On The State Of The Music Union: If Content Is King, How Does It Feel To Be A Prince?

Over the past couple of decades, changes to the music ecosystem in relation to the fall and rise of major labels is frequently rehashed at music industry events, but the fate of the indies is often neglected. Here Neil Turkewitz his experience at a recent panel discussing precisely this issue. _________________________ Guest post by Neil Turkewitz of Medium This past weekend I participated on a panel at the Oregon Sports and Entertainment Law conference at the University of Oregon L...

Maggie Rogers Wants To Be Your Valentine & She Brought Music

Maggie Rogers is a lot of things: she's a witch feminist rockstar, a modern hippie pop star, and everyone's current musical crush. (Look for her at next year's Grammys — she'll sweep.)But while we were all playing I Heard It In A Past Life on repeat, Rogers was busy working on another piece of musical artistry — a playlist about crushes. After Rogers' visit to Refinery29, where she mused about the evolution of her career and performances, we asked her (nicely!) to craft a Valentine's Day playli...

How a woman born with malformed hands overcame the odds to become a nurse

The letter arrived like a slap in the face. She was being informed, in so many words, that she needed to choose another major or find another university. Her chosen course of study – nursing – was done for her at Cal State San Bernardino. “I was in tears,” said Kimberly Reichardt, now 25, of the 2015 letter that could have derailed her career. “I was upset and angry. That was my dream, my goal. I felt like nursing was my calling.” No was a word she heard too often as she tried to make it as a nu...

Concert Review: Mumford & Sons Ride ‘Delta’ During U.S. Tour Opener in Philly

Mumford & Sons have come a long way from their raw and rustic roots to have happily come no way at all.  Even though the British quartet smoothed and softened elements of the rough, intimate folk of their 2007 origin story to include flickering arena-rock guitars (on 2015’s “Wilder Mind”) and windy synths (2018’s “Delta”), […]

Beck connects with his home town in Hollywood Bowl show

Beck Hansen is definitely a proud Angeleno. That was clear from his warm — and often humorous — reflections about growing up in the area during an excellent Hollywood Bowl concert. “We’re here to celebrate a homecoming,” said the singer/guitarist, who mentioned friends, family and neighbors in attendance. “There’s no better place to be on a Friday night.” Beck’s first headlining gig at the venue since ’08 came amid more than a year of touring for latest album “Colors.” The solid batch of exubera...
