How a woman born with malformed hands overcame the odds to become a nurse

The letter arrived like a slap in the face. She was being informed, in so many words, that she needed to choose another major or find another university. Her chosen course of study – nursing – was done for her at Cal State San Bernardino. “I was in tears,” said Kimberly Reichardt, now 25, of the 2015 letter that could have derailed her career. “I was upset and angry. That was my dream, my goal. I felt like nursing was my calling.” No was a word she heard too often as she tried to make it as a nu...

Concert Review: Mumford & Sons Ride ‘Delta’ During U.S. Tour Opener in Philly

Mumford & Sons have come a long way from their raw and rustic roots to have happily come no way at all.  Even though the British quartet smoothed and softened elements of the rough, intimate folk of their 2007 origin story to include flickering arena-rock guitars (on 2015’s “Wilder Mind”) and windy synths (2018’s “Delta”), […]

Oh Boy, I Guess We All Have To Watch Mumford & Sons Covering Ariana Grande

Hey, remember when the 1975 were covering Ariana Grande in the BBC Live Lounge? That was a time, right? That was three days ago. That was the long-lost era when a real British rock band would cover Ariana Grande in the BBC Live Lounge. That time is gone. Now we have to deal … More »

Beck connects with his home town in Hollywood Bowl show

Beck Hansen is definitely a proud Angeleno. That was clear from his warm — and often humorous — reflections about growing up in the area during an excellent Hollywood Bowl concert. “We’re here to celebrate a homecoming,” said the singer/guitarist, who mentioned friends, family and neighbors in attendance. “There’s no better place to be on a Friday night.” Beck’s first headlining gig at the venue since ’08 came amid more than a year of touring for latest album “Colors.” The solid batch of exubera...

Mumford & Sons beware! An AI can now write indie music

A fascinating project called Amadeus Code promises to out-Tay-Tay Tay Tay and out-Bon Bon Iver. The AI-based system uses data from previous musical hits to create entirely new compositions on the fly — and darn if these crazy robot-songs aren’t pretty good. The app, which is available from the iTunes Store but doesn’t seem to be working properly, creates song sketches in minutes, freeing you up to create beautiful lyrics and a bit of accordion accompaniment. The video above is a MIDI version of ...

Fourth of July traditions in the US

At some point in 1776 , Thomas Jefferson probably turned to John Hancock and said, “You know, John, someday people will spend entire days drinking light beer, packing themselves into public parks, then trying to figure out how to use the bathroom once the fireworks start to celebrate this declaration!” This is pretty close to what happens when you attend one of the big, famous Independence Day fireworks shows in this great nation of ours. Although seeing fireworks over the National Mall in DC...

Arroyo Seco Weekend announces dates for 2018 return

If you were up early to catch the 129th annual Tournament of Roses parade, you might have seen an ad with the save the date for the return of a music festival to Pasadena. And unlike Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon’s Cord & Tish commentary on Amazon Prime, this wasn’t a joke. Arroyo Seco Weekend, which made its debut on the grounds surrounding the Rose Bowl in 2017, will return June 23 and 24 for its second year. The festival, put on by Goldenvoice, which also helms events such as the Coachella V...
