Ann, Nancy and Quincy

In The Wall Street Journal this week, I interviewed Heart for my "Anatomy of a Song" column on their 1977 hit, Barracuda (go here). I spoke with Ann and Nancy Wilson, Roger and Mike Fisher and Mike Derosier about the sexist ad and remark that led Ann Wilson to write the lyrics to the song. [Photo above of Ann Wilson, left, and Nancy Wilson courtesy of Facebook] Here's the band performing Barracuda in 1977... Also in the WSJ, I interviewed Moby for my "House Call" column in the Mansion...

Are You Related To Nancy Wilson?

Nancy Lamoureaux Wilson was born on March 16, 1954, in San Francisco, California. She is the youngest of three sisters (Lynn, Ann, and Nancy), who grew up in southern California and Taiwan before their US Marine Corps father retired to the Seattle suburb of Bellevue. On February 9, 1964, when Wilson and her sister Ann watched The Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan Show, they both instantly wanted to be like the band. In an interview she said, “The lightning bolt came out of the heavens and struc...

Heart Announce First Tour In Three Years After “Nightmare” That Almost Ended The Band

The last we heard from Heart was in 2017, when sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson hadn't spoken to each other in almost seven months after Ann Wilson's husband was arrested for assaulting Nancy Wilson's twin sons backstage at a show after they didn't close the tour bus doors behind them. Even … More »

NAMM 2019: Peter Frampton honored at the 34th annual TEC Awards on Saturday

The trophy had barely been handed to Peter Frampton when the guitarist and singer announced at National Association of Music Merchants Show in Anaheim on Saturday night that instead of talking about his acclaimed career he wanted to talk about Les Paul, the man for whom this lifetime achievement award is named. “For a guitarist, for any serious musician, really, any association with Les Paul is a privilege and an honor,” Frampton told the audience of music industry professionals gathered for the...

NAMM 2019: Four who worked with Prince talk about what made him a legend

Morris Hayes was Prince’s musical director and New Power Generation keyboardist for years, but it took a little time to figure out the mercurial musical genius at first, he said Saturday during a panel at the NAMM Show on Prince and what made who and what he was. “I’ll put it to you like this,” Hayes said in response to a question about how Prince ran his rehearsals. “What I figured out was that there were five of them, five Princes. Rehearsal depends on which one showed up today. “The day befor...

For the second day of the National Association of Music Merchants show, or NAMM, at the Anaheim Convention Center, fans were treated to the annual Yamaha All-Star concert with Sarah McLachlan, Jonathan Butler and more. NAMM 2019: Phil Collen of Def Leppard draws a big crowd of fans old and new

The line of maybe 300 fans stretched a walkway where security guards barked orders to keep moving as soon as you got your autograph and a photo, but Phil Collen, guitarist for the hard rock band Def Leppard, seemed intent to give everyone at least a quick moment of his time. They’re the reason, after all, that his band was voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, said Collen, a longtime resident of Laguna Hills, standing next to a Jackson Guitars display of the new Phil Collen signat...

NAMM 2019: She Rocks Awards honor Lisa Loeb, Terri Nunn, the late Janis Joplin and many more women Friday

Thirty years ago when Dale Krevens co-founded Tech 21 she remembers coming to the National Association of Music Merchants show and being mistaken for a booth model, a pretty face to attract the mostly male attendees into the amplifier company’s space on the exhibition hall floor. “Obviously it’s more widely accepted now,” she said on the red carpet of the She Rocks Awards at the House of Blues in Anaheim on Friday. “People don’t raise their eyebrows like, ‘Oh, what’s she doing here?’ “They talk ...

NAMM 2019: Heart’s Nancy Wilson, songwriter Cam talk ‘tone’ in She Shreds panel

Women are definitely a minority at NAMM, in the audience and on the panels, so it was nice to see She Shreds magazine take over the stage inside the Gibson room for a talk by five women guitarists on the topic of tone. Joining She Shreds founder and editor Fabi Reyna on Friday were well-known artists such as Nancy Wilson of Heart, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and Cam, a singer-songwriter whose songs have been recorded by the likes of Sam Smith and Miley Cyrus, as well as emerging perfo...

The disgraced actor was arraigned on a charge of felony indecent assault and battery during a hearing at Nantucket District Court. The judge set another hearing for March 4. Soul Serenade: Nancy Wilson, “Face It Girl, It’s Over”

Happy New Year! During the holidays I decided to determine once and for all how long I’ve been writing this column. I searched the Popdose archives for that first column which I knew featured the King Curtis song that gave the column its name. And there it was, published on April 15, 2010. Soul Serenade is approaching its ninth birthday. In that whole time I’ve only taken a few weeks off (alright, one of them was last week) so simple math tells me that there have been well over 400 entries in th...

President Barack Obama released his annual list of favorite books, movies, and songs on his Facebook page yesterday. From Facebook: As 2018 draws to a close, I’m continuing a favorite tradition of mine and sharing my year-end lists. It gives me a moment to pause and reflect on the year through the books, movies, and music that I found most thought-provoking, inspiri...

Read it and weep, music fans and presidential historians. Martha Davis and The Motels check in with Southern California dates

Martha Davis’ distinctive voice and cinematic lyrics separated The Motels from the other New Wave bands that emerged from the came out of the 1980s. “It was time of extreme creativity in terms of the whole of the music business,” Davis said in a phone interview from her ranch outside Portland, Oregon. “That was really exciting. Shortly after that you started to get this homogenization that we see a lot of now.” Songs such as “Only the Lonely,” “Take the L,” “Suddenly Last Summer” and “Remember t...

Donald Glover gives Childish Gambino an epic send-off with his final two shows at The Forum

Throughout his This Is America Tour, singer-songwriter, actor, writer, director, producer and stand-up comedian Donald Glover told audiences that they had purchased tickets to the last-ever Childish Gambino tour. In a series of interviews with various media outlets, Glover said his reason for giving up his long-running musical alter-ego was that he felt it had run its course and he wants to focus on other things including his award-winning TV series, “Atlanta.” That doesn’t mean the 35-year-old ...

9 Nancy Wilson Video Clips

The late Nancy Wilson worked tirelessly during her long singing and acting career. Days off were rare. Weekends meant work and holidays meant work. If she wasn't touring to support one of her Capitol albums she was appearing at one of the country's top supper clubs. Or she was in Las Vegas or on television variety shows. Or she was acting in dramas. People forget that Nancy was quite a good actress. When she announced her retirement from touring in 2011, I spoke with her by phone. She said, "H...

Jazz Singer And Actress Nancy Wilson Dead At 81

“Ms. Wilson resisted the label of ‘jazz singer’ for much of her career, although jazz was the form to which she returned time and again and in which she had her greatest critical and popular success. She considered herself above all ‘a song stylist,’ she once told The Washington Post. ‘That’s my essence,’ she said, ‘to weave words, to be dramatic.'” — The Washington Post

Nancy Wilson: 1937-2018

Nancy Wilson, a sassy and sultry jazz-pop singer with extraordinary vocal and visual performing talents who emerged in 1959 just as the pop charts were starting to be dominated by soft Brazilian voices, vocal harmonies by beach bands, British invaders and back-beat soul from Detroit and Memphis, died yesterday. She was 81. Nancy was first and foremost a superb story-singer who let songs run through her and whose face and voice perfectly expressed the elation or pained determination detailed in...
