Mondo Releasing Vinyl Soundtrack Series Devoted to the Movies of Cameron Crowe, Starting With ‘Say Anything’

Cameron Crowe knows a thing or two about music. He got his start as a 16-year-old music journalist for Rolling Stone – an experience he expanded into a feature film with Almost Famous. Now, Mondo is releasing a series of vinyl soundtracks devoted to Crowe’s films, starting off with his angsty teen dramedy Say Anything. Later this year, Mondo will continue the series with expanded soundtracks for Singles and Jerry Maguire. Over the course of 2021, Mondo plans to release several Cameron Crowe ...

How Stray Cats’ Lee Rocker found inspiration in a pandemic-era cross-country road trip

After hunkering down in their Laguna Beach home for five months during the coronavirus global pandemic, Stray Cats bassist Lee Rocker and his wife Deborah decided to embark on a nearly 6,000 mile-roundtrip journey across America in their Airstream trailer — which seemed like a safer option than flying since they could keep mostly to themselves — through 20 states to check in on Rocker’s parents in Long Island, New York. The jaunt ultimately inspired Rocker’s latest solo album, “Gather Round,” wh...

How to watch ‘The Evil Dead’ live with leading man Bruce Campbell

Filmed on a shoestring budget in the woods, “The Evil Dead” has become a cult horror classic. The 1981 film, about five college students who take off to a remote cabin for a weekend and uncover an evil force, sparked two sequels, a TV series, video games and comic books. The movie made stars out of director Sam Raimi, who went on to direct films such as the Spider-Man trilogy and the upcoming Dr. Strange sequel. It also made the career of leading man and producer Bruce Campbell, who starred as A...

How to experience some of California’s biggest music festivals — from your car

Festival Pass is a newsletter that lands in your inbox weekly. But during prime festival season you get bonus editions, too! Subscribe now. The big news in the live music industry this week is that Dr. Anthony Fauci says we may see concerts return in the fall if things go well and 70-85% of the population gets the COVID-19 vaccine. (Fingers crossed and sleeves rolled up for that to happen.) We’re already seeing some festivals elsewhere in the country move dates into the fall, such as Governors ...

She Rocks Awards go virtual (and free) in 2021 with The Go-Go’s, Nancy Wilson and more

Last year’s She Rocks Awards ended on a high note with honoree Gloria Gaynor singing her inspiring hit “I Will Survive.” Little did anyone know what the rest of 2020 had in store: a global pandemic that continues to keep the live entertainment industry largely shut down. However, the show will go on. The 2021 She Rocks Awards, which is typically held at House of Blues Anaheim in conjunction with the NAMM Show at the Anaheim Convention Center, has pivoted to a virtual experience due to the contin...

Heart Biopic: ‘Portlandia’ Star Carrie Brownstein Directing Film About the Female-Led Rock Band

Heart, the rock band that rose to popularity in the 1970s and ’80s thanks to its shredding guitar riffs and powerful vocals from sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, is getting the biopic treatment. Carrie Brownstein, the Peabody Award-winning writer and actress who starred alongside Fred Armisen in the comedy series Portlandia, is set to direct the Heart biopic for Amazon Studios. In a recent interview with SiriusXM’s Lyndsey Parker (via THR), Heart co-founder, lead singer, and guitarist Ann Wilson...

Connie Fredericks Malone: A Great Online Concert

I met Connie Fredericks Malone in 2013 when she wanted to share with me about her sister Carole Fredericks, who moved to Paris from Boston in 1979. Carole went on to have a super successful singing career with the group Fredericks, Goldman, Jones, which sold over a million records and she also put out three successful solo albums. Unfortunately, Carole died unexpectedly in 2001 at the age of 49 while on a fundraising tour of Dakar. The family was shocked, and grief stricken, and Connie wanted...

It’s All Happening: ‘Almost Famous’ 20th Anniversary Reunion Podcast Is Coming in July

In the time of coronavirus, we’ve enjoyed plenty of reunions, albeit virtually thanks to the magic of the internet. But we’re about to have a cinematic reunion that rings true to the act of “getting the band back together” more than any other. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Cameron Crowe‘s semi-autobiographical film Almost Famous, and Cadence13’s Origins podcast series brought in the filmmaker, as well as cast members like Billy Crudup, Patrick Fugit and Kate Hudson, to take a look bac...

NAMM 2020: She Rocks Awards deliver powerful performances from Gloria Gaynor, Suzi Quatro and more

The speeches were as powerful as the performances at the 8th Annual She Rocks Awards at House of Blues Anaheim Friday night. The event, which is part of the 2020 NAMM Show happening at the adjacent Anaheim Convention Center, celebrated the careers of women in the music and audio industries. Put together each year by the Women’s International Music Network founder Laura B. Whitmore, the 2020 She Rocks Awards was hosted by Yahoo Entertainment music editor Lyndsey Parker and saxophonist-vocalist Mi...

How the three-day Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival will showcase the best of San Diego

Pulling together a multi-day music festival with numerous stages, a wide variety of talent and stretching it throughout the Port of San Diego — from Broadway Port Pier to the Hilton Bayfront Park, which is about a mile and a half of festival territory — is certainly no easy undertaking. However, partners Paul Thornton and Ernie Hahn of Wonderlust Events, LLC have gone all in with their Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival. The inaugural festival will take place Friday, Nov. 22 through Sunday, Nov. ...

Ann, Nancy and Quincy

In The Wall Street Journal this week, I interviewed Heart for my "Anatomy of a Song" column on their 1977 hit, Barracuda (go here). I spoke with Ann and Nancy Wilson, Roger and Mike Fisher and Mike Derosier about the sexist ad and remark that led Ann Wilson to write the lyrics to the song. Are You Related To Nancy Wilson?

Nancy Lamoureaux Wilson was born on March 16, 1954, in San Francisco, California. She is the youngest of three sisters (Lynn, Ann, and Nancy), who grew up in southern California and Taiwan before their US Marine Corps father retired to the Seattle suburb of Bellevue. On February 9, 1964, when Wilson and her sister Ann watched The Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan Show, they both instantly wanted to be like the band. In an interview she said, “The lightning bolt came out of the heavens and struc...

NAMM 2019: Peter Frampton honored at the 34th annual TEC Awards on Saturday

The trophy had barely been handed to Peter Frampton when the guitarist and singer announced at National Association of Music Merchants Show in Anaheim on Saturday night that instead of talking about his acclaimed career he wanted to talk about Les Paul, the man for whom this lifetime achievement award is named. “For a guitarist, for any serious musician, really, any association with Les Paul is a privilege and an honor,” Frampton told the audience of music industry professionals gathered for the...

NAMM 2019: Four who worked with Prince talk about what made him a legend

Morris Hayes was Prince’s musical director and New Power Generation keyboardist for years, but it took a little time to figure out the mercurial musical genius at first, he said Saturday during a panel at the NAMM Show on Prince and what made who and what he was. “I’ll put it to you like this,” Hayes said in response to a question about how Prince ran his rehearsals. “What I figured out was that there were five of them, five Princes. Rehearsal depends on which one showed up today. “The day befor...

NAMM 2019: Phil Collen of Def Leppard draws a big crowd of fans old and new

The line of maybe 300 fans stretched a walkway where security guards barked orders to keep moving as soon as you got your autograph and a photo, but Phil Collen, guitarist for the hard rock band Def Leppard, seemed intent to give everyone at least a quick moment of his time. They’re the reason, after all, that his band was voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, said Collen, a longtime resident of Laguna Hills, standing next to a Jackson Guitars display of the new Phil Collen signat...

Women are definitely a minority at NAMM, in the audience and on the panels, so it was nice to see She Shreds magazine take over the stage inside the Gibson room for a talk by five women guitarists on the topic of tone. The disgraced actor was arraigned on a charge of felony indecent assault and battery during a hearing at Nantucket District Court. The judge set another hearing for March 4. Soul Serenade: Nancy Wilson, “Face It Girl, It’s Over”

Happy New Year! During the holidays I decided to determine once and for all how long I’ve been writing this column. I searched the Popdose archives for that first column which I knew featured the King Curtis song that gave the column its name. And there it was, published on April 15, 2010. Soul Serenade is approaching its ninth birthday. In that whole time I’ve only taken a few weeks off (alright, one of them was last week) so simple math tells me that there have been well over 400 entries in th...
