Days of Thunder

The one thing I can’t really tell is whether the racing here is realistic or not, since I don’t understand much about NASCAR racing — but the way the cars bump and grind in this movie does feel farfetched. But hey, it’s still a pretty fun and silly ride, reeks of late 80s-style moviemaking (the machismo, the heavy Tony Scott color saturation), and all in all, I can’t say I disliked revisiting it — and I’m pretty sure it’s the first time I watched it since its original release.

Jerry Falwell Jr. says his wife had an affair with the Florida 'pool boy,' claims they were being blackmailed

Suspended Liberty University leader Jerry Falwell Jr. confirmed to Washington Examiner columnist Paul Bedard late Sunday that his wife, Becki Falwell, had an affair with a young man they befriended and went into business with in Florida eight years ago. In a long statement, Falwell said he and his wife "forgave each other" — he suggested he had also "important smaller things" to atone for, quoting a Bible verse about visual adultery — and had decided to come forward because his wife's former...

Takuma Sato wins his second Indianapolis 500 at empty track

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — At an eerily empty Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Takuma Sato snatched a second Indianapolis 500 victory in an odd and unsatisfying finish to “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” Sato held off Scott Dixon and won under caution after teammate Spencer Pigot crashed with five laps remaining in Sunday’s race, held in front of empty grandstands for the first time in 104 runnings because of the pandemic. Pigot needed medical attention on the track, the crash scene was a massive debris...

Trailer for 'Hitting the Apex' Documentary About Motorcycle Racers

"This is what you have to do - brake as late as possible." 1091 Pictures has released an official US trailer for a documentary titled Hitting the Apex, which is finally getting an official release in the US this year. The film originally opened in the UK back in 2015, but considering it's about motorcycle racing, which isn't that popular in the US (at least compared to NASCAR), it never opened. Until now. Hitting the Apex, narrated by Brad Pitt (who also produced the doc film), is the story ...

How to name your baby using machine learning

When I was young, I always hated being named Dale. This is mostly because my primary image of what Dales looked like was shaped by Dale Gribble from King of the Hill, and also Dale Earnhardt Jr., the NASCAR driver. Neither of these Dales fit my aspirational self-image. On the contrary, I wanted to be named Sailor Moon. I did not like that my name was “androgynous” — 14 male Dales are born for every one female Dale. When I asked my parents about this, their rationale was: A. Women with androgynou...
