Predators Were Quiet at the Deadline, and That’s Okay

What you see is what you have. The NHL Trade Deadline has come and gone, with general manager David Poile and the Nashville Predators mainly staying quiet. However, there is one name leaving the Music City – Matt Irwin, but his playing time has been largely nonexistent for the past few months – and the return, Korbinian Holzer – who has six goals and 23 assists in 203 regular-season games – is not exactly the splash that many were hoping for. The Predators’ up and down season led to Poile cha...

Ducks defenseman Matt Irwin eager to take on new role with new team

IRVINE — Veteran defenseman Matt Irwin was on the ice for 21:23 on Tuesday at Honda Center. He was credited with two shots on goal, two others that were blocked and a team-leading seven hits. He also blocked three shots, which also led his team. Instead of bracing for heavy hits on the forecheck from Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf, instead of trying to protect the puck from sly right wing Jakob Silfverberg, Irwin was happy to be lined up with them instead of against them for the first time. His debu...

Grading the Ducks’ Active Deadline

The Anaheim Ducks had a busy trade deadline. First, they traded Ondrej Kase to the Boston Bruins in return for a first-round pick, Axel Andersson and David Backes. Monday morning, they traded Derek Grant to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for center Kyle Criscuolo and a conditional fourth-round pick and sent Nick Ritchie to the Bruins for Danton Heinen. Related: NHL’s 600-Goal Club When all was said and done, the Ducks traded away six NHL players and two minor leaguers including Danie...

Jets Lacking Urgency at Pivotal Point in Season

At at time the Winnipeg Jets should be playing more desperately than ever to snag a Western Conference wild card spot and a chance to hoist Lord Stanley’s mug, they’re playing more like a team interested in hitting the links. Jets Not Exactly “Fuelled With Passion” Right Now The Jets — over their past three losses in particular — have not played nearly well enough to stay afloat in a playoff run. It’s not just a few guys guilty of looking uninterested; from top line down, they have exhib...

Predators’ David Farrance Becoming Premier Offensive-Defenseman

It’s no secret that hockey is an ever-changing game at the professional level. Attributes deemed as “NHL worthy” 20 to 30 years ago don’t necessarily make the cut anymore. In regards to defensemen, blueliners that only demonstrate strengths in their own zone are few and far between. In today’s NHL, every skater needs to be able to contribute offensively, even the guys with “defense” at the front of their title. The Nashville Predators are an organization very familiar with quality offensive-...

Penguins, Zucker Enjoy Honeymoon Phase

When Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford made yet another splash before this season’s trade deadline, sending the team’s 2020 first round pick, forward Alex Galchenyuk and top prospect Calen Addison to the Minnesota Wild for winger Jason Zucker, the buzz in local media circles and among Penguins fans was nearly unanimously positive. Yes, losing Addison hurts the club, but a late first-rounder is hardly a Mercedes. Related: 20 Biggest NHL Trades in the Past Year Meanwhile, t...

DeBrincat scores twice, rallies Blackhawks past Preds in OT

Alex DeBrincat scored in the third period and overtime to rally the Chicago Blackhawks past the Nashville Predators 2-1 on Friday night. DeBrincat skated in alone from center ice, then snapped off a shot with 57.8 seconds left in the extra period that beat Pekka Rinne high on the glove side for his 16th goal. DeBrincat tied the game at 1-1 with a power-play goal midway through the third period.

Biggest Canucks’ Trade Deadline Moves of the Decade

As the 2020 NHL Trade Deadline approaches, it is an appropriate time to look back at the impactful deals the Vancouver Canucks made in the last decade. These trades aren’t limited to just transactions made on the day of the deadline but the days leading up to it as well. The Canucks have acquired players who’ve impacted their roster but have traded away fan favorites as well. Adding Lapierre and Higgins Prior to making their Stanley Cup Final run in 2010-11, the Canucks traded for Maxim...

Predators’ Trade Deadline Targets

The Nashville Predators are the perfect team to break fans’ hearts. High expectations heading into the season were followed by lackluster efforts that had the team on the wrong side of results on many nights. The Predators are still outside the playoffs, but just barely. With games in hand, they are set up nicely to control their destiny. A dominant 5-0 shutout win over the New York Islanders on Feb. 13, followed by a huge weekend sweep of the St. Louis Blues gave fans hope that maybe, just ...

Coyotes Weekly: Gearing Up for the Trade Deadline

The 2019-20 NHL trade deadline is right around the corner, and, with the Arizona Coyotes’ playoff hopes being very much up in the air at the current point in time, general manager John Chayka may be considering adding to his roster this year after a relatively quiet deadline in 2019. Ottawa Senators Legend – Chris Phillips

There’s something special about a player who spends his entire career with one team. Whereas it used to be a common occurrence – think Mario Lemieux, Jean Beliveau, or Joe Sakic – the salary cap era has made the feat somewhat rarer. Now, franchise players often finish their careers in other markets. It’s led to the departure of Daniel Alfredsson from the Ottawa Senators, to Jarome Iginla getting traded from the Calgary Flames, or to Martin Brodeur making a brief appearance with the St. Louis Blu...

Islanders Scoring Woes Hits 3 Games

In Andy Greene’s debut with the New York Islanders, it was evident that the defensive structure head coach Barry Trotz implemented was back on track. And while it’s great that one of the on-ice issues seems to be trending in the right direction, the long-existing issue with scoring remains a problem. Over the past three games, the Isles have had a hard time filling the net, only lighting the lamp once in nine periods. Before Anthony Beauvillier beat Arizona Coyotes goaltender, Antti Raanta, ...

There are many ways for a general manager to improve his team, be it free agency, the waiver wire and of course the trade market. It’s a dance that is done not only at the trade deadline but throughout the season and offseason as well. Some come together quickly and painlessly, while others take several months of painstaking negotiations between two opposing GMs. Over the past year, we have seen a couple of blockbuster trades get completed that have changed the entire landscape of the NHL. Maple Leafs: Muzzin Extension Could Make Rielly or Dermott Expendable

Amid the buzz of the playoff hunt and impending trade deadline, the Toronto Maple Leafs are making moves behind the scenes. Most notably, they’re reportedly inching towards a long-term contract extension with defenceman Jake Muzzin. Jake Muzzin’s rumoured contract extension may force moves elsewhere. Islanders’ Beauvillier Critical for Stretch Run

As the New York Islanders enter the home stretch of the season in contention for a playoff spot, Anthony Beauvillier has really established himself as one of the team’s best players. Other than Brock Nelson, who leads the team in goals, Beauvillier might be the team MVP and is going to be the X-factor the rest of the season.  2019-20 Season The highlight of Beauvillier’s season will be his two overtime goals. He scored his first one in December against that Buffalo Sabres and then anothe...

Predators’ Concern Over Shea Weber’s Health

Shea Weber brought so much joy to Nashville Predators fans over many seasons, but now he might bring so much pain. The long-time captain was one of Nashville’s first legit superstars and he will always have a special place in the hearts of the Smashville faithful, which is why the recent news of his injury hurts on two levels. Weber is expected to miss the next four-to-six weeks with a left ankle sprain. The announcement of the injury led to speculation that the defenseman’s season is over, w...

Blues bid to get back on track against Predators

The St. Louis Blues will try to regain their focus on Saturday afternoon when they host the Nashville Predators in the opener of a home-and-home series. The Blues lost 6-5 in overtime in Las Vegas against the Golden Knights on Thursday night in their first game since defenseman Jay Bouwmeester suffered a life-threatening cardiac event. Medical personnel revived Bouwmeester after he collapsed on the bench Tuesday night during a game against the Anaheim Ducks.

THW’s Goalie News: Shesterkin’s Promotion, Saros, Talbot Shutouts

The Buzzer: Lightning win ninth straight; Smith’s hat trick powers Predators

Sanford gave the Blues a one-goal lead with 8:15 remaining in the final period, but the Golden Knights found a way to tie the game and notch the overtime winner. It was St. Louis' first game since Jay Bouwmeester's medical incident on Tuesday. Smith's first career hat trick helped Nashville snap a two-game losing streak.

Oilers Can Withstand McDavid Injury

Connor McDavid is, without a doubt, the best player in the NHL right now. One aspect of his game that makes him such a great player is his speed. The trade-off of being one of the fastest players in the world is you raise your risk of injury. I don’t think anybody would say that McDavid is exactly “injury prone” but his playing style does make him prone to getting into accidents. Saturday night against the Nashville Predators, defender Dante Fabbro and the Edmonton Oilers star forward came to...

Capitals Have Scoring Options at the Trade Deadline

Between players like Alexander Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, T.J. Oshie, John Carlson and Evgeny Kuznetsov, the Washington Capitals have offensive firepower. Carlson is in the midst of a career year and is likely to be the Norris Trophy favorite; Ovechkin is filling the net as usual and is on his way to becoming the greatest goalscorer to ever play, and young forward Jakub Vrana is emerging as one of the NHL’s elite offensive players. While these key players give the Capitals one of the most fear...

Islanders’ Lamoriello Not Living up to the Hype

The New York Islanders have had their share of bad general managers. From 1995-2006, Mike Milbury was in charge of the team. Then, after a short run with Neil Smith, the Islanders turned to former backup goaltender, Garth Snow. Fans chanted and begged for him to leave, and when he did, it seemed like the organization would be saved by Lou Lamoriello.  Lamoriello’s tenure as general manager of the Islanders has started off far different from his time with the New Jersey Devils with whom he won...

Blackhawks on the Road, Look to Get Back on Track

A week-long road trip north of the border will hopefully help the Chicago Blackhawks find that momentum they had going into the All-Star break. The Hawks need to refocus after a third-period collapse on Sunday night during the trip’s opener against the Winnipeg Jets, as their early lead became a 5-2 loss. The night was not without its highlights, with captain Jonathan Toews picking up his 800th career point with a secondary assist on Dominik Kubalik’s goal just 15 seconds into the game. The g...

What is Team Identity: 3 Interpretations

Nearly two years ago, I wrote a piece regarding the Calgary Flames and their alleged lack of “character”. The conclusion I drew back then: conversations about a team’s character are essentially meaningless because there’s no consensus among fans, reporters, players and team executives on what the word “character” actually means. I still stand by that conclusion, and it has been proven right many times since.  Following the Flames’ loss on Feb. 6 to the Nashville Predators, their third cons...

Predators’ Reasons for Optimism

It’s been tough for Nashville Predators fans to read team news this season. It wouldn’t be at all surprising if many fans have just resorted to switching off their team notifications from any sports apps they have. After all, positive outlooks for the team are extremely scarce and for good reason. There is no shortage of content reporting negative projections and trends that the Predators are ultimately facing, and again if the shoe fits… For a team that was thought to be a cup contender this...
