It’s a bad deal if you have to compromise yourself

Before I was aware of my people-pleasing ways, I would always find a reason to justify compromising myself. It was a “great opportunity” or it seemed “urgent”. Maybe this person could be the “love of my life”. It’s best not to burn bridges, eh? Future Nat will deal with any issues. Maybe they’ve changed? Doesn’t everyone deserve a second (or hundredth) chance? If I don’t do this, I’ll wind up living in a cardboard box by the weekend. It’s not great and I feel icky about it, but it will do for no...

Looks delicious! Would it taste nice as an un-iced loaf cake, like banana bread (son not keen on frosting)? Thanks.

3 places where Tater Tots rule in the San Fernando Valley

My family had a strange relationship with Tater Tots. My mother never read the directions on packages, and she didn’t realize that they were supposed to be baked, and served crispy. Instead, she steamed them in a sort of weird frat house casserole. She’d take a heavy pot, pour a layer of Tater Tots on the bottom, drop a frozen hamburger patty on top of that, and then pour ketchup all over the concoction. Then, she’d put it on the oven, turn the heat on low, and go out to visit friends. Sometimes...

Court Tosses Devin Nunes' Silly SLAPP Lawsuit Against CNN (techdirt)

As you may recall, Rep. Devin Nunes has spent the last few years suing all sorts of critics and journalists, in a vexatious bout of abusing the courts to try to stifle criticism. Most famously, Nunes sued a satirical cow on Twitter (that case is still ongoing). But in December of 2019 he sued CNN. As we noted at the time -- despite a weird column by a media critic at the Washington Post saying that this case was "halfway decent" -- the case seemed like the dumbest Nunes' suit we'd seen so far. ...

Best hot and spicy food for takeout and delivery in the San Fernando Valley

Takeout orders often come with little plastic packets of hot sauce, sometimes brand names, sometimes generic, but always discarded by me because I have a shelf packed with hot sauces. If it were at all appropriate, I would probably put hot sauce on my oatmeal first thing in the morning. Some like it hot, and I’m definitely one of those for whom a meal without a scorched palate is a meal wasted. Some are addicted to heroin, others to crack, still others to strong drink. My addiction is to a subst...

Best comfort foods in the San Fernando Valley: Nat’s Early Bite Coffee Shop

Is 2020 done? Really? You sure? … Let’s recheck our calendars, where we find that, yes, the number at the top actually is 2021. A new year — and hopefully a much better year. Though after 2020, the competition for betterness isn’t especially tough. Before I start looking for metaphors and similes to define what we’ve gone through — and continue to go through — let me cut to the chase, and get down to what’s needed most to return to a semblance of normalcy, of ease, of not waking up at 4 in the m...

Comment on confetti cookies by Nat

I make these cookies every 3-4 months. Kids love the dough but once baked with generic jimmy sprinkles they always had a bit of a bitter flavor (it’s the purple jimmies, I’m convinced). I recently discovered using all-confectioner sugar jimmies makes a HUGE difference. The cookies went from “good” to “HOLY CRAP I ATE THE WHOLE PAN AND MY FACE IS ON FIRE BECAUSE I HOOVERED THEM DOWN DIRECTLY OUT OF THE OVEN.” So, in short, level up these cookies and make sure you spring for the all-sugar sprinkl...

Comment on tall, fluffy buttermilk pancakes by Nat

These are amazing, made them for Xmas morning with the family and they were a hit. Great tip on finishing them off in the oven. Loved the fluffy height on them. Recently discovered maple syrup should be served warm too, made all the difference. Thanks for another excellent recipe, will be making again.

Comment on unfussy sugar cookies by Nat

Made these with three kids around, v simple and minimal mess thanks to rolling method. They were tasty enough to leave half un-iced and eat plain (might have contained extra vanilla as used vanilla bean paste). Instructions to look for done-ness by colour of cookies v useful as we have an unreliable gas oven. Keeping half the dough in the freezer for another time, handy to have an activity half ready. Thanks Deb for helping make our Christmas Eve festive!

5 best restaurants for exotic sushi rolls in the San Fernando Valley

The first “exotic” sushi roll I encountered was the iconic California Roll — technically a makisushi containing cucumber, crab (real or otherwise) and avocado, sesame seeds and flying fish roe, often rolled inside out. It stands in contrast to the more traditional nigiri sushi — the lozenge of rice with a slice of fresh fish layered on top, held in place with a strip of seaweed. The California Roll first appeared on the burgeoning sushi scene back in the late 1970s. And it’s probably from Califo...

Nat & Dan’s Elegant Canberra Lakeside Wedding

Nat & Dan We talk a lot about how important family is around these parts, and for Nat and Dan, it was a centrepiece of their day. They included their baby boy throughout the day, used a family member to officiate their vows, even asked the bride’s grandparents to bear witness to the marriage certificate. And as All Grown Up Weddings captured so beautifully, it resulted in a day that with its classic style and stunning location by the water (in Canberra) was warm, welcoming and so very much about...

Trump’s Nat’l Security Adviser Says Biden Sure Does Look Like The Pres-Elect

Donald Trump’s national security adviser gestured toward reality Monday, acknowledging that Joe Biden would likely be the President in 2021.  Still, days after every major news network projected Biden would be the winner of the 2020 contest, and despite repeated losses in court for President Donald Trump’s legal effort to throw out thousands of votes, National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien only partially acknowledged Biden’s victory.  “Look, if the Biden-Harris ticket is determined to ...

Comment on broccoli cheddar soup by Nat

This soup is very good. I am doing keto/low carb so I left out the flour and carrots. I used a sharp shredded cheddar and you can taste the depth in every bite. I’m going back to the farmers market tomorrow to buy more broccoli and make another batch to freeze.
