Leonard Bernstein Awkwardly Turns the Screws on Tenor Jose Carreras While Recording West Side Story (1984)

What have we here? Evidence that the Maestro is a monster? Or a behind the scenes reminder that Arrested Development’s wannabe actor Tobias Fünke is not too far off base when he says that to make it in “this business of show, you have to have the heart of an angel and the hide... of an elephant.” Both? Neither? Any way you slice it, the recording session above is not for your typical cast album. West Side Story, with a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, and lyrics b...

Dennis McCarthy: A cruise down Van Nuys Blvd.’s memory lane

Tom Whitebirch pulled his 2015 GMC Acadia to the curb in front of Keyes Motors on Van Nuys Boulevard last week, and saw in his mind’s eye a short, fat kid wearing red and white checkered overalls holding up a hamburger on a plate, smiling at him. He’s not 82 now, he’s 16 – driving his 1941 Mercury Coupe with a powder blue paint job he paid $200 bucks for in 1953. Not the paint job, the whole car. A Bob’s Big Boy Restaurant used to be right here. It’s where all his pals in the Jesters, Hi Hats, a...

Hoover killed JFK, RFK & MLK, Brad Pitt’s private hell, and Mick Jagger’s mental disorder, in this week’s dubious tabloids

Reality packed its bags, cancelled the mail, put its dog in a kennel and boarded a plane to take a long flight as far away as possible from this week’s tabloids. Former FBI chief "Hoover Ordered Kennedys & MLK Murdered!” screams the National Enquirer front page, promising “Explosive PROOF That Will Change History.” Don’t rewrite the history books yet. Their “proof” is a memo from FBI archives in which J. Edgar Hoover wrote of his dislike for civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Hardly a sm...

Robert De Niro: ‘Trump is a real racist, a white supremacist’

The notoriously reticent star has become one of the most vocal critics of Donald Trump. He talks about how the man in the White House makes mobsters look bad, the damage being done to America – and how he fears for his mixed-race childrenHere, with Orson Welles and Spike Lee on the walls, and James Dean and Natalie Wood on the doors to the toilets, is where Robert De Niro might have died. In October, a pipe bomb addressed to the actor was sent to the New York warehouse where his film production ...

Adam and Eve were aliens, soul transplants, and an exploding squirrel in this week’s dubious tabloids

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, let’s be grateful for the short memories of the tabloids, which gleefully forget what they’ve previously written the moment it’s inconvenient for them. Prince Harry’s wife “Meghan Meets Diana’s Secret Daughter!” screams the cover of this week’s Globe, describing how Sarah, allegedly “conceived in a bizarre fertility test before Prince Charles and Diana wed,” met with the latest addition to the Royal Family on the last day of her recent visit to New Zealand. Yes, th...

Steven Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story’ Remake Casts ‘Baby Driver’ Star Ansel Elgort

Ansel Elgort is leaping from a crime movie that might as well be a musical to a full-on musical set in a world of crime. The Baby Driver star has signed on to star in Steven Spielberg‘s upcoming remake of West Side Story, anchoring one half of the story’s star-crossed duo. The Hollywood Reporter has the news and they report that Elgort was selected after a lengthy casting process, one that dragged on for so long that insiders were concerned no one would be found. After all, West Side Story r...

Alien attack imminent, Buckingham Palace is a drug den, and the Queen is a criminal mastermind, in this week’s fact-challenged tabloids.

You know we’re in for a fun week with the tabloids when the National Enquirer cover on “America’s Worst Sex Abuse Churches,” along with its handy guide – “Is Your Priest a Pervert?” – is topped by the banner: “Flip Over The Cover For 5 More Exclusives!” You turn the page with eager anticipation, and find . . . an ad for a walk-in bathtub. Perhaps the deception is designed to make you feel dirty, boosting sales for the tub? It’s a bait-and-switch tactic that seems to embody this week’s tabloid of...

Tabloids turn on Trump, Brad and Jen reunite, and Natalie Wood’s death mystery solved, in this week’s dubious tabloids

The tabloid worm has turned. After three years of deifying Donald Trump and lauding his every utterance, there is no clearer indication of the tabloids turning against Trump than the Globe magazine’s cover tribute to “American hero” John McCain. Trump famously said in 2015 that the Arizona senator was “not a war hero,” and the Globe dutifully obliged with the headline: “Trump Is Right: McCain is NOT a War Hero.” They followed up with the story of a dying McCain “sending tender goodbyes to his s...

Prince Harry’s love child, Trump’s revenge, and Teri Hatcher homeless, in this week’s highly dubious tabloids

Truth bears little relation to this week’s big tabloid exclusives, which give fake news a bad name. “Surrounded by traitors!” screams the National Enquirer cover. “Donald & Melania Fight Back!” No, they don’t. The official magazine of the Oval Office complains at length about the “backstabbers” attacking Trump, but then offers no instance of Trump or Melania hitting back. It’s just a paranoid rant that sounds like it could have been dictated by Trump himself. “Prince Harry’s love child wrecks ...

Decapitating Kim Kardashian, Paul McCartney drives his daughter insane, and cat litter beauty treatments, in this week’s tabloids

What do Jesus Christ, Herman Munster, TinkerBell and Elvis Presley have in common? Readers of this week’s Globe magazine can choose between life-like statuettes of all four, and I can’t help wondering which will be the biggest seller, and what that might tell us about those tabloid lovers. The bronze Jesus lights up as a “radiant testimony to faith,” while Elvis sings, Herman Munster plays his TV show’s theme song, and TinkerBell . . . well, she just stands there looking cute, inviting you to “...
