Alleged Hospital Bombing Plotter Who Died During Arrest Attempt Was Target Of FBI Sting

A Missouri man who allegedly believed he was picking up an IED to bomb a hospital died when the FBI attempted to arrest him, the bureau said Wednesday. Timothy Wilson, 36, had been the subject of a months-long terrorism investigation “which revealed him to be a potentially violent extremist, motivated by racial, religious, and anti government animus,” the FBI said in a statement. He was allegedly planning a bombing and had considered several targets, according to the statement. Though the FBI...

Black man from Moreno Valley who controlled Neo-Nazi group to dismantle it dies at 55

By MICHAEL KUNZELMAN A black activist who took control of one of the nation’s largest neo-Nazi groups — and vowed to dismantle it — has died amid a legal fight over who would lead the group. James Stern died Oct. 11 after getting hospice care for cancer, according to one of his attorneys, Bob Ross, and a friend, Arne Edward List. Stern, 55, died at home in Moreno Valley, California, List said. “James was a very unconventional crusader,” Ross said Monday, praising his client’s “quiet confidence.”...

Judge: Black Activist Can’t Represent Neo-Nazi Group In Charlottesville Suit

The black civil rights activist who claims to have taken over a decades-old U.S. neo-Nazi group was barred from representing the group in a lawsuit, the Associated Press reported Thursday. U.S. Magistrate Judge Joel Hoppe had previously ordered the activist, James Hart Stern, to retain a lawyer on the National Socialist Movement’s behalf since he was not one himself. The NSM and its former leader were named in a federal lawsuit brought on behalf of 11 people injured during the white nationali...

The ‘Unbelievable’ Story Of How One Of The Oldest US Nazi Groups Imploded

It’s not uncommon for white nationalist groups to fizzle out or self-destruct in a blaze of infighting. Relinquishing control of their own organization to a black civil rights activist is a new one, though. So goes the bizarre tale of the National Socialist Movement (NSM), a decades-old group that has roots in the American Nazi Party and was recently turned over by longtime commander Jeff Schoep to a black California minister named James Hart Stern. Far-right extremists and those who study th...

Neo-Nazi Group Vows To Wrest Control Back From Black Activist

The head of one of the nation’s longest-running neo-Nazi groups recently turned control of the organization over to an African-American ordained minister who wants to dismantle the group from the inside. But the story gets much weirder than that. Each side is now accusing the other of fraud, with the former leadership of the National Socialist Movement (NSM) and California activist James Hart Stern each threatening legal action over control of the organization. In a Wednesday interview with T...

Improbably, a Black activist is now the owner and leader of the "National Socialist Movement," which he is turning into an anti-racist group

The National Socialist Movement is one of America's oldest and most influential Holocaust denial/neo-Nazi movements, proprietors of one of the world's most prominent Holocaust denial websites and defendants in a case over members who participated in racist violence at the Charlottesville "Unite the Right" rally. James Hart Stern is a Black civil rights activist who has previously -- through very unlikely circumstance -- become head of a prominent KKK organization, which he took over in orde...

Neo-Nazi group’s leader is Southern California black man who vows to dissolve it

By Michael Kunzelman, Associated Press One of the nation’s largest neo-Nazi groups appears to have an unlikely new leader: a black activist who has vowed to dismantle it. Court documents filed Thursday suggest James Hart Stern wants to use his new position as director and president of the National Socialist Movement to undermine the Detroit-based group’s defense against a lawsuit. The NSM is one of several extremist groups sued over bloodshed at a 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville,...

A year after Charlottesville, hate marches on

It’s been a year since hundreds of white nationalists, carrying everything from semi-automatic rifles and Nazi symbols to Confederate flags and tiki torches, marched on the grounds of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, chanting “Jews will not replace us” and threatening people of color. The rally, which started on the night of Aug. 11 and continued through the next day, culminated in tragedy — as a self-proclaimed white supremacist drove his car into a crowd of counter protesters, in...

Specter Of Violence Looms Ahead Of Tennessee ‘White Lives Matter’ Rallies

When a coalition of virulently anti-Semitic and white supremacist groups descend on two middle Tennessee towns Saturday for a day of “White Lives Matter” rallies, they say they will do so unarmed and with the intention of publicizing their views rather than clashing with counter-protesters. But given the rash of violent incidents at recent white nationalist events and the rhetoric of some of the leading participants, civil rights groups and city leadership in Murfreesboro and Shelbyville are pre...

3 Dead, Dozens Injured, Amid Violent White Nationalist Rally

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — A car rammed into a crowd of protesters and a state police helicopter crashed into the woods Saturday as tension boiled over at a white supremacist rally.
