Adding Up What The Government Shutdown Cost Museums

“In that time, the Smithsonian — 19 museums including the Cooper Hewitt design museum in New York and the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) and National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC, along with the National Zoo — lost an estimated 1 million visitors. … Although national museums (except the Cooper Hewitt) offer free entry, the Smithsonian lost an estimated $3.4m in gross revenue from its gift shops, concessions and IMAX film screenings.” – The Art Newspaper

The shutdown today: Government closure is now longest ever

By The Associated Press Here’s what’s up with the partial government shutdown on Day 22. WHAT’S NEW TODAY The shutdown officially is the longest in U.S. history, eclipsing a 21-day closure that ended Jan. 6, 1996, during President Bill Clinton’s administration. The House and Senate adjourned for the weekend, with lawmakers scattering to their states and districts before snow blankets the nation’s capital. With no negotiations expected during the weekend, the shutdown will enter its fourth week n...

Ensuring access to the people’s lands

Outdoors people — those who enjoy their nature live and in situ rather than televised — are second to none in their appreciation for what rangers and other government workers do to keep our nation’s wildlands pristine. That doesn’t mean they mistake the feds, or the state employees, or the county, or the city, with the wonders of the natural world itself. It’s not theirs. It’s ours. The fields and streams were there for millennia before the government worker in a uniform. Smokey Bear’s ancestors...

How The U.S. Government Shutdown Affects Traveling Americans And Visitors From Abroad

The United States Federal Government has been partially closed since December 22nd, indefinitely, until the Congress with the president’s approval can pass a budget to allocate funds for several major agencies. Since government shutdowns like the one in Washington DC are exceedingly rare elsewhere in the developed world, the procedures and cutbacks pertaining to services, travel or otherwise can be unclear. Many are ad-hoc to an extent; based in part on how long the showshutdown will last. For ...

How the shutdown is affecting travel

The government has been shut down for about two weeks, and travelers are really feeling its negative effects. While the shutdown isn’t making travel impossible, it’s thrown a wrench into many aspects of the travel industry that have resulted in delays, inconveniences, and even safety concerns for travelers. The longer the shutdown lasts, the more issues are likely to arise. While TSA agents remain working, an increasing number are taking “sick days” due to being forced to work without pay, ca...

Donald Trump warns US government shutdown could last more than a year

Donald Trump has warned that the government shutdown could last for more than a year as he doubled down on a pledge to block any deal that does not include US-Mexico border wall funding.  The US president confirmed during a press conference after closed doors White House talks with leading Democrats on Friday that he had made the threat.  “I did. Absolutely I said that. I don’t think it will [last that long] but I’m prepared,” Mr Trump said. However he added that he hoped the shutdown would end ...

Trump calls meeting with lawmakers, ‘let’s make a deal’ on government shutdown

President Donald Trump invited the top congressional leaders from both parties to a White House briefing on border security Wednesday and suggested he wants to “make a deal” to end the government shutdown. It’s the first sign of a possible opening for negotiations to break the stalemate that’s had parts of the government shut for 11 days. Congressional aides said the offer was extended to the eight top leaders from both parties in the new House and Senate that convenes on Thursday and will inclu...

Shutdown Enters Second Week as Furloughs, Closings to Expand

There’s been no sign of progress toward ending President Donald Trump’s standoff with Democrats over funding for a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border. The Smithsonian said all museums, research centers and the National Zoo will close starting Jan. 2 unless the shutdown ends. Closings would include the popular National Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of African American History & Culture on the National Mall in Washington, and the Cooper Hewitt design museum in New York.

Trump's shutdown will close Smithsonian Museums, National Zoo, and more

If the government shutdown extends beyond New Year's Day, Donald Trump's political tantrum will close the Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo in Washington, DC, among many other sites important to Americans. After January 1, the museum network will be forced to close all its doors along the National Mall and at the National Zoo. The closures would go into effect on January 2, and continue until lawmakers reach a deal to fund the government. This is just one of many ways people are feeli...

Trump threatens to seal off US-Mexico border 'entirely' if Congress does not agree funding for a wall

Donald Trump, the US president, on Friday threatened to seal off the entire US-Mexico border if Congress does not approve funding for a border wall. His comments came as the federal government shutdown entered its seventh day, with Mr Trump failing to come to a budget agreement with his Democratic opponents. The continued standoff means around a quarter of the US government will likely remain closed well into 2019, when the Democrats will take control of the House of Representatives. The shutdow...

Wolf Food in a Bag Developed by Real Wolf Experts

It's a kibbled food described as:• Tested in red, Mexican and gray wolves.• Formulated for the exotic canine.• Complete nutrition - No supplementation required.• High protein and high energy - Promotes good body condition and a shiny...

Smokey Bear's world is on fire. But the old mascot won't die.

The real Smokey Bear narrowly avoided death in the pine-filled Capitan Mountains of New Mexico, nearly 70 years ago.  Just west of the town of Roswell, firefighters found the bear cub clutching to the upper reaches of a tree, with singed paws and legs. The stranded black bear would almost certainly have perished amid the ashy land, but foresters saved him, and ultimately brought the tiny omnivore to the National Zoo in Washington D.C.  Here, the newly named "Smokey Bear" lived out his domesticat...

Relist Watch

John Elwood reviews Tuesday’s relists, er, relist. For the longest time, to be called “national,” a thing had to be either really good or really bad. A trip through the alphabet reminds us of such noteworthy things as the national anthem, the National Book Award, National Car Rental, a national disgrace, the National Enquirer, the National Football League, National Geographic, a national holiday, the NIH, the National Journal, the National Mall, national news, NPR, the National Review, national ...

This is Not a Wolf

I took this photo of a Maned Wolf at the National Zoo earlier this week.  Native to Brazil, these animals have incredibly long legs and a hunched gait.  They are actually not a wolf or a fox, but their own genus called “Chrysocyon,” which means Golden Dog.Maned wolves hunt solo, and about half their diet is plant (a lot of it is wolf apples), and about half is snakes, frogs, rabbits, birds and other small game. Koala Genome Sequenced

By Kevin E. Noonan -- Many people of a certain age will remember their first awareness of the koala coming from a television commercial in the 1960's for an Australian airline ("I hate Qantas"). Thereafter, of course, zoos, like the San Diego Zoo and National Zoo in Washington, D.C., developed breeding programs for these marsupials (unrelated to bears despite their earlier moniker). Today, these animals face a variety of ecological challenges and provide a biochemical conundrum with regard to th...

Someone tried to smuggle a snake onto a plane by hiding it in a hard drive

Snakes on a plane? Not today.  TSA agents in Miami intercepted an attempt at smuggling a live python onto a plane on Sunday. In an pun-filled Instagram post, the TSA detailed how a passenger tried to get a ball python from Miami to Barbados by tucking it into an external hard drive.  Snakes on Barbados are actually quite rare, so an invasive species such as a ball python could cause serious damage to the local ecosystem.  The python didn't manage to Slytherin to the plane.  SEE ALSO: We nee...

Why pandas are the most overrated animals on the planet

Pandas are very cute, but they don't do much for their ecosystem, and they take away a lot of resources from other endangered plants and animals that support multitudes. Following is a transcript of the video. Here's a hot take — pandas are OVERRATED. Sure, they're cute. SO cute that they show up in our logos, movies, and even on our feet. We're obsessed! But every obsession has a dark side, and this one starts in China. The Chinese government owns nearly all the giant pandas on earth. And Ameri...
