How the Iwo Jima flag raising became a symbol of American dreams

Seventy-five years ago this week, the U.S. Marine Corps began the invasion of Iwo Jima. The tiny island in the Pacific Ocean was considered Japanese soil and fiercely guarded. The battle is said to have been the bloodiest in the war, and Iwo Jima had a monumental impact on the Marine Corps. Bloodiest of battles Iwo Jima is a tiny, 8-square mile island, about one-tenth the size of Catalina Island. Iwo Jima means “sulfer island” in Japanese and is 660 miles south of Tokyo. The Imperial Japanese Ar...

One idea, two cool things: desalinated water and renewable energy

The contraption, reminiscent of Rube Goldberg, would produce two of Southern California’s most precious and essential resources: water and electricity. The electricity would be renewable. And the drought-proof, desalinated ocean water could prove more environmentally friendly — and cheaper — than the water produced from three other desalters proposed for Southern California. The idea, developed by Silicon Valley-based Neal Aronson and his Oceanus Power & Water venture, caught the attention of th...

The tale of this Marine in the ‘other’ Iwo Jima photo can, at last, be told

Bill Seltzer is the fourth Marine on the right in the photo above, the one with his foot on the stump in front of the American flag flying over Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima, 75 years ago this Sunday, Feb. 23. We’ve all seen the iconic picture AP Photographer Joe Rosenthal took of the flag being raised, but not many have seen this one he took of a platoon of Marines who made it to the top, smiling and celebrating in front of the flag. Those smiles would soon fade as they made the treacherous journey...

Analysis: More of Trump's chaos vs. Sanders' radical change?

The latest in President Donald Trump's chaos: The New York Times reported Thursday that Trump edged out his acting Director of National Intelligence, Joseph Maguire, because Maguire briefed lawmakers on Capitol Hill about Russian meddling in the 2020 election. Reminder: Maguire took over the intelligence post last summer, just as the Ukraine scandal was erupting. At the time Trump called the longtime Navy SEAL an "excellent" choice. Now he's been replaced by Trump's ambassador to Germany, Richar...

Trump Uses Pardons To Reward His Friends And Justify His Own Actions

The President’s latest wave of pardons on Tuesday — primarily benefiting, as usual, his political allies — was a little more on the nose than normal. Why? Because of Paul Pogue. The construction company owner served three years of probation for tax fraud, having underpaid the government $473,000. Just months ago, Pogue’s family did something they’d never done before: Donate huge sums to the President’s reelection effort. Pogue’s son and daughter-in-law donated more than $200,000 to the Trump ...

Professional Military Education: Programs Are Accredited, but Additional Information is Needed to Assess Effectiveness

What GAO Found All of the military services' intermediate- and senior-level officer Professional Military Education (PME) programs have met civilian and met or partially met Joint PME (JPME) accreditation requirements. However, not all of the military services' PME programs met the JPME seminar student mix requirement of at least one student from the nonhost military department. From ‘Junk Bond King’ To Abramoff Pal, Trump’s Pardon List Dredges Swamp

Blago’s not the only one off the hook Tuesday. In addition to former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s commutation, President Donald Trump used his pardon power on several less-than-savory characters, including an infamous ‘80s investor known as the “junk bond king.” The king, Michael Milken, was convicted decades ago of securities fraud, and his allies have tried ever since to secure a presidential pardon. Milken was fined $600 million and spent 22 months in prison for what Bloomberg News call...
