Master of the Revels

In the English royal household, the Master of the Revels was responsible for overseeing royal festivities (aka revels) and stage censorship. An important role in the time of William Shakespeare, which turns out to be a key DTAP (Destination Time And Place) in Nicole Galland’s follow-up to The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O., aptly titled Master of the Revels. Galland had collaborated with Neal Stephenson on the first book, but took this sequel on by herself. I’m always curious about how authors collab...

The Next ‘Spider-Man’ Movie Reveals Three New Images and Trio of Fake Titles

Typically, we know the titles of upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movies years in advance, letting Marvel Studios tease us and taunt with their increasingly intricate grand design. I love it. I also hate it. But the upcoming third Spider-Man movie, and the sixth MCU movie to feature Tom Holland‘s take on Peter Parker, began filming without a title. Blame the fact that Marvel has to share its Spidey productions with Sony. Blame a filming schedule hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Blame Agatha...

Kate Winslet: ‘I’ve been asked so many times about the intimate scenes’

Kate Winslet on facing down misogyny in film, strange lockdown habits and the unexpected joys of fossil huntingA man is adjusting the angle of his laptop. “Hello!” he waves. Is that a dishwasher behind him? A little wooden knick-knack, painted with “Let’s Dance” in a jaunty font, balances on an Aga. I have landed in a cheery overlit garage, somewhere on the south coast. And then the nice man moves to the side and bloody hell there’s Kate Winslet. Movie-star Kate Winslet – “Hiya!” – in a smart bl...

Chase Elliott wins his first NASCAR Cup title as 7-time champ Jimmie Johnson makes his exit

AVONDALE, Ariz. — The new face of NASCAR circled Phoenix Raceway for a celebratory lap of his finest achievement. Chase Elliott, NASCAR’s most popular driver, was now a Cup champion, too. He came upon teammate Jimmie Johnson, who banged doors with Elliott. Then the seven-time champion, in his final race, gave Elliott a fist bump. The torch has officially been passed. Elliott did what Dale Earnhardt Jr. could not and parlayed the popularity gleamed off his Hall of Fame father into a NASCAR champi...

(Harvard University Press, 2020), and Jesse Wegman, Let the People Pick the President: The Case for Abolishing the Electoral College (St. Martin's Press, 2020). Emmy Awards show could go off the rails — and make for fun TV

Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, Sunday’s socially distanced Emmy Awards telecast won’t look anything like it usually does. And that could be a good thing. Late-night funny guy Jimmy Kimmel will host the event from Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, but there will be no audience or traditional red-carpet festivities. Instead, nominees will be stationed in their homes (or other locales) with special camera-and-mic rigs. Organizers say they will be able to tap into live feeds from 130 loca...

Disney+’s comedy ‘Earth To Ned’ mixes celebrity talk show with alien abduction

When Eliza Skinner interviewed for a writing job on “Earth to Ned,” a new Disney+ series in which a celebrity-obsessed alien decides he’d rather host a late-night talk show than destroy planet Earth, the comedian and writer says it seemed too good to be true. “I was a little skeptical because it was too perfect for me,” Skinner says. “I love sci-fi. I love late night. I love puppets. “Literally, one of the reasons that I moved to New York City when I was just out of college was I thought I was g...

‘Earth to Ned’ Review: Disney+ Has a Delightfully Quirky and Funny Talk Show Hosted By an Alien Puppet

When The Muppets returned to Disney+ a few weeks ago with the new series Muppets Now, I found myself disappointed. While it was somewhat fun to see all of Jim Henson’s beloved characters in a new project, they don’t work as well when they’re mostly separated from each other in their own YouTube-style web shows, and something felt off about the comedy. Thankfully, another Jim Henson production is coming to Disney+ starting later this week, and this feels more in line with the kind of laughs that...
