9/11 parade tribute a bit much, say locals

This float at the 40th annual Popcorn Festival in Valparaiso, Indiana, will never be forgotten. The New York Post affects outrage at the "grotesque display" but writes that it is being "torched" by online critics, because it's hard to keep it up the act for even one whole sentence in the face of such an epic production. — Read the rest

NEVER FORGET – 9/11/2001 Twenty Years Later

It hardly seems possible – 20 years have passed since September 11, 2001. The imagery, the anger, the sadness, the loss, the feeling that everything would be different, still lingers to this day. As painful as it is, those memories are an important part of American history. Never forget how we lived before, during, and […] Read More … The post NEVER FORGET – 9/11/2001 Twenty Years Later appeared first on The Firearm Blog.

Twitter account memorializes Holocaust victims turned away from America in 1939

The powerful Twitter account St. Louis Manifest (@Stl_Manifest) spent Holocaust Remembrance Day documenting the names and images of passengers on the German transatlantic liner St. Louis. The ship sailed from Germany in 1939 with 937 passengers, most of whom were Jews fleeing the Third Reich. The St. Louis headed to Cuba where many of its passengers hoped to disembark before heading to the United States. Instead Cuba admitted only 28 of the passengers. Although the U.S. media covered the event w...

Sixteen symbolic acres: the rebuilding of Ground Zero

The following is an excerpt from Power at Ground Zero: Politics, Money, and the Remaking of Lower Manhattan On September 21, 2006, Governor George E. Pataki of New York and Governor Jon S. Corzine of New Jersey with New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg gathered at Ground Zero for a hastily-called celebratory news conference to announce that the Board of Directors of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey had approved a series of agreements expected to “expedite the redevelopment proce...

Battle Damaged M16 At Home In New Zealand

Captain Peter Williams was carrying this rifle on February 14, 1967 in Vietnam when he was killed by an enemy landmine. The devastating forces involved with the anti-personnel booby trap that took Capt. Williams life is apparent in his damaged long arm that was also peppered with shrapnel. Captain Williams was scheduled to return home after […] Read More … The post Battle Damaged M16 At Home In New Zealand appeared first on The Firearm Blog.

September 11, 2001: 15 Years Later – Never Forget

About 4 or 5 years ago on the anniversary of this date, September 11th, and the planes flying into both the Twin Towers in NYC and the Pentagon, and of course the plane that went down in Pennsylvania, some guy on Facebook (who I didn’t know well and have never spoken to again) commented on a post I put up and asked “Why do people keep bringing this up? Can’t we move away from it?” Instead, I moved away from him because I was irked at him for even daring to say something like that, especially on ...

Texas Mattress Store Jokes About 9/11 for Some Reason

There are many ways of observing and commemorating the 15th year since 9/11. Here in New York City for example, we’re shining two giant beams of light in the sky, as we always do, and generally avoiding the visitors constantly flocking to the 9/11 Memorial as if it’s a tourist attraction. This far removed, and over a decade deep into 9/11 thinkpieces, it can feel as though no discourse surrounding 9/11 can offend us. Today, though, that notion was proven wrong by, um, a Texas mattress company?Re...

Memorial day: Remembering Those Who Gave Everything

Memorial Day is a US holiday that I struggle with every year as it is a rather emotional one for me. It seems that all too often people lose sight of why we enjoy the day off to BBQ with friends and family among other Memorial Day traditions. We do our best to honor those […] Read More … The post Memorial day: Remembering Those Who Gave Everything appeared first on The Firearm Blog.

World Premiere Video: Repeater ‘Never Forget’

To kick off 2016 in high style, POPDOSE proudly premieres the latest video from one of our favorite bands. Ideal listening for fans of New Order, Echo & The Bunnymen and The Postal Service. There are plenty of original new wave acts (typically with at least one original member and loads of spare parts) riding nostalgia circuit. Beyond New Order, a handful, like Duran Duran, OMD and Blancmange, have found a way to recapture their magic with compelling new music (see my Unintentionally Retro Top ...

The Only Good Celebrity Website Is Dead

I am experiencing my own nightmare before Christmas right now because Jim Carrey has taken down his aggressively weird personal website. Now, instead of the hellish and surreal digital refraction of a famous man’s clearly deranged mind, the landing page simply says “Please come back later.”Read more...
