Revisiting David Poile’s Drafts – 1998

The Nashville Predators have been an NHL franchise since the 1998-99 season after the city was granted an expansion team in June 1997. In their 20 seasons of existence, there has been one constant: general manager David Poile, who’s served that role since the franchise’s inception. Therefore, he’s been the architect of every team that’s suited up, from the inaugural roster through the 2018-19 rendition. That means he’s been the decision-maker in a lot of drafts and has made a lot of picks, 178 t...

Is My Girlfriend Related to Me Now?

From Newfoundland: My mother’s mother died so my grandfather married a new women and that new women Is my girlfriend’s grandmother’s sister… so do that mean me and my girlfriend are related? The simple answer is “no”. You are not biologically related and an intimate relationship with her would not be incestuous. If you are interested in each other and the real question is whether it is okay for you to date, I think it’s fine. Depending on how your family defines family membership, the two of you...

The climbing popularity of scaling frozen waterfalls in Newfoundland

The Flatrock waterfall climb has been dubbed High Anxiety, but Terry Day is anything but anxious when hauling the gear he needs from his Jeep to the 40 metres of solid ice. In some ways, ice climbing is easier than rock climbing, Day said, as you don't have to look for a place to grab onto. "Guaranteed for ice climbing you're gonna break stuff off, you're gonna see it falling off while I climb," he said. "That's what the rope and harness is for.

The Mini-Split Heat Pump Experiment – Will it Save You Money?

Way back in 2008, we completed a custom home that we still live in today.  In that same year, I wrote a post about my regrets of not going with a heat pump to save money on energy bills.  I’m not sure if you use electric heat where you are from, but if you do, you’ll know that winter heating costs can really add up. What is a Heat Pump? A heat pump is a heating/cooling system for a home that works very similarly to your refrigerator.  When it’s cold outside, it can efficiently extract the wa...

Sharpe could laugh about 'brain-dead moment' after getting first win at Scotties

Second-ranked Kerri Einarson shot just 56 per cent in a wild-card game loss to open the competition at Centre 200. Fifth-ranked Manitoba skip Tracy Fleury dropped her first two games and curling minnow Nunavut recorded its first-ever main draw victory. Newfoundland and Labrador's Kelli Sharpe got people talking Sunday afternoon with a shot she'd like to have back. Sharpe decided to draw for four instead and missed to settle for three.

Oil’s Well Does End Well for Alberta Environmental Regulator

In August 2017, I reported that the SCC would hear an appeal from the Court of Appeal for Alberta (Orphan Well Association v Grant Thornton Limited, 2017 ABCA 124). The case related to the jurisdiction of a regulatory body, not in terms of its governing statute, but in terms of a classical constitutional law question and division of powers. The conflict – or apparent conflict – was between a provincial regulator’s authority on environmental matters and the federal government’s jurisdiction over ...

When Did Your Breed Show Up at Westminster?

American Kennel Club registrations have declined 75 percent over the last 30 years, even as the population of the U.S. has increased and the number of dogs (both total and per capita) have also increased.  The AKC has added dozens of new breeds in an attempt to pad out its sagging membership numbers, but these breeds tend to be rare, and so things are not much improved.Bull Terrier (Colored) 1877 Bull Terrier (White) 1877 Dandie Dinmont Terrier 1877 Fox Terrier (Smooth) 1877 Manchester Terrier (...

winter hike: beaver lake and port alice

We've had so many gloriously cold and sunny days! I don't know if that's unusual for January and February or if I was oversold on the rain, but I love it. The temperature will range from around -3C to +4C (mid-20s to about 40 F), which barely qualifies as cold, and combined with bright sunshine, is some of my favourite weather.Last weekend, we hiked in the Beaver Lake Recreation Trail -- the first time I've ever hiked in winter. There was a dusting of snow and it was cold enough to wear a parka....

Tarmac delay laws in the US

For the claustrophobic , it’s the most anxiety-inducing experience imaginable. For everyone else, it’s a cold version of hell. You’re sitting on a trans-Pacific flight, settling in with your noise cancelling headphones and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and the next thing you know the captain comes on saying there’s a medical emergency and you’re landing somewhere in remote, ice-covered Canada. “Well ok,” you think. “We don’t want anyone dying.
