Relist Watch

John Elwood reviews Monday’s relists. Congress is fighting with the executive branch to try to obtain information this week. But here at Relist Watch, we’re just giving the stuff away. A lot of throughput this week, as the Supreme Court disposed of five relists. Most puzzling is City of Newport Beach, California v. Vos, 18-672, which asked whether the Americans with Disabilities Act requires law-enforcement officers to provide accommodations to armed, violent and mentally ill suspects as they br...

Laverne Cox’s graduation speech at Pitzer reveals a recent revelation Twitter gave her

Jacquelyn Aguilera, senior class speaker for Pitzer College’s 55th commencement, said she was there Saturday for the same reason as many of her fellow graduates — to take a photo with Laverne Cox. However, the actress and activist left the class with far more than selfies with a celebrity. Cox acknowledged agonizing over the right words to send off the graduates. She started her speech quoting author and social activist Bell Hooks’ book, “Yearning.” “‘Language is a place of struggle. The oppress...

These cyclists rode in complete silence Wednesday, here’s why

Retired Pasadena firefighter Armando Salazar was sitting on his bicycle, waiting for the start of the Ride of Silence on Wednesday at the Rose Bowl, when an organizer fitted him with a black armband. The gesture meant he would ride in memory of a cyclist killed on a public street. “He is known only to God,” Salazar said, when asked from whom he was riding. Though they met, he never did learn the victim’s name that day, one day after Christmas in 1982 on Summit Avenue in Northwest Pasadena. An 8-...

Thunderstorms and heavy downpours possible as rain hits Southern California

LOS ANGELES — A weather system out of the Pacific will generate widespread rainfall in the Southland Thursday, and there’s a slight chance of thunderstorms accompanied by brief but intense downpours and small hail, National Weather Service forecasters said. The storm could produce roadway flooding, flooding near small streams, downed tree limbs and power lines, a rough morning commute and hazardous conditions at sea, they said. But it will trigger no major flooding, mud slides or debris flows, s...

USC graduation: Newport Beach’s Hawken Miller defies odds, rare disease to get degree, Washington Post internship

He prayed. He endured years of pain. He fought hard against a body that too often betrayed him. He ate his vegetables and took the best pills his parents could find for him. Hawken Miller stayed alive. If you look back at the life of one 22-year-old man from Newport Beach who graduates from USC on Friday, May 10, you can find statistics that suggest he should have died a long time ago. His mother, Debra, will tell you those numbers are merely historical data points, and have no bearing on Hawken...

Sharks as big as a bus seen off Southern California coast after 30-year hiatus

Imagine a bus with a tail attached to it. That’s how shark expert Chris Lowe describes the basking shark, the second-largest shark species — smaller only than the whale shark — that has been causing a buzz off the Southern California coast the past month after being rarely seen for three decades. Six Cities Run (in the rain)

Six Cities Run It wasn't until mile 3 or 4 when decided what I was doing. And even then I really didn't know. It was starting to rain and the trails near my house were turning to mud, so I decided to hit the roads for a longer run. As I started to run, I kept thinking, how can I make this interesting? After all, outside of avoiding life threatening vehicular traffic, running on the roads for more than a couple of hours can be quite humdrum, even (sorry road runners) boring.  So I tri...

Ask the Lawyer: Who gets the pets in a divorce?

Q: We are married 11 years. No kids, two dogs. We are both attached to the dogs. We are going our separate ways. In the divorce, who will be awarded the dogs? -S.T., Lomita Ron Sokol A: Prior to January of this year, pets in a divorce in California were treated as inanimate objects, similar to a car or furniture. So, a key question was, “Who is the owner?” (Who paid for the pet, in whose name is the title?) Now a new law allows the divorce court to take into consideration factors such as who...

UCI professor shows how plastics have become a killing machine for coral reefs

With her bare hands, UCI Professor Joleah Lamb on Monday fished out pieces of plastic waste she had collected that morning from Newport Beach: a sports drink bottle, a trash bag, child’s sand toy, crumpled foam cup and some straws. “Oh, wait,” she said, letting go of a particularly grimy piece. “I am going to use these gloves,” and she slipped on the latex protectors before picking up the degraded water bottle again. “There are a million bacteria on it.” Students from the UCI School of Biolo...

Coachella 2019: Shalom, Kanye! Festival goers celebrated Passover with Matzahchella seder

If Kanye West is going to do his Easter Sunday service, then Rami Matan Even-Esh knew he had to bring Passover to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Again. Three years ago Shabbat Tent, an all-volunteer group brought what it called Matzahchella, a series of 10-minute seders at the start of Passover, to the festival. “When Kanye announced his Easter service then I knew we had to do it,” Even-Esh said. “I’m going to do Passover wherever I am but I just think there needs to be equal repr...

Southern California’s French Catholics lead fundraising efforts to rebuild burned Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris

Bernard Prat was born in 1946, a little over a year after the bells of the Notre Dame Cathedral tolled for the last time — marking the Liberation of Paris during World War II. Prat’s parents were witnesses to that historic event. “The bells were so loud and powerful that they shattered some of the cathedral’s windows,” he said. “When I saw the roof collapse, I was so sad. It took 1,300 trees — an entire forest — to build that wooden roof.” Prat, 73, of Newport Beach, was among millions around th...

Endangered wetlands offer vital wildlife habitat and, often, a reason to fight about coastal development

Between Southern California’s popular beaches and much-traversed mountain trails lies an unsung natural landscape, teeming with its own special wildlife. As you head outdoors to celebrate Earth Day weekend — or to simply connect with nature and leave behind the anxieties of urban life — one option is our area’s often overlooked coastal wetlands. In Orange and Los Angeles counties, more than 90 percent of the estuaries, lagoons and other coastal waters that existed in the 19th century have been l...

Relist Watch: The Muller Report

John Elwood reviews Monday’s relists. I normally try to have Relist Watch written up by Wednesday after the court issues its order list. Here it is late Thursday and I’m just getting it out. It’s not just that I’m lazy, though I am. It’s that I’ve been mulling over the five new relists, and what I think their prospects are for Supreme Court review. In fact, I’ve been mulling these cases so deeply that you could call today’s installment the “Muller Report.” I like the ring of it. I’ve also spent ...

Lost sea creatures wash up in California as melting ice caps ‘open door’ for mass northern migration, scientists believe

The Pacific Ocean off the California coast is mixed up, and so are many of the animals that live there. The violet, thumbnail-size snails washing up here in Horseshoe Cove have never been seen this far north.By-the-wind sailors, a tiny relative of warm-water jellyfish, sprinkle the tideline by the dozen. And in the tide pools along the cove’s rocky arms, as harbour seals about to pup look languidly on, a slow-motion battle is underway between native Giant Green and Starburst anemones, a species co...
