Q1 Financial Reports: Acushnet and Callaway

Lost in this week’s big TaylorMade news is the fact that golf’s two other top dogs have released remarkably strong Q1 financial reports. Both Callaway and Acushnet blew away 2020’s COVID-infected Q1 results. What makes it interesting is both companies outperformed their pre-COVID 2019 numbers.   And not by a little, either.    Acushnet is reporting . That’s up 42 percent from 2020 and 34 percent from 2019. Callaway, meanwhile, says it hit $652 million in Q1. That’s a new Q1 company reco...

SUPERSPEED MEMBER TESTING: FINAL RESULTS

Whether the relationship is correlative or causal, increased distance and lower scores are inextricably linked. And whether the topic is biomechanics, flexibility, sequencing or anything else, the common denominator is speed. As in swing speed. Though the market now features a variety of relatively similar products, it’s fair to suggest SuperSpeed created the mousetrap upon which others are trying to improve. What is SuperSpeed? A quick refresher. SuperSpeed Golf believes its OverSpeed trainin...

Golfer’s Choice Survey Results

A few weeks ago, we asked you about the clubs in your bag. We called it the Golfer’s Choice Survey because we wanted to know which brands you chose to add to your bag most recently. The idea was to give us a sense of how brands are performing with our readers and to gauge what impact COVID has had on equipment replacement cycles. It’s well-accepted that the typical replacement cycle (how frequently golfers replace their clubs) is three to six years, depending on the club category and how avid th...

Four Testers Wanted – Inesis Spikeless Shoe

The Inesis spikeless shoe is arguably one of the most comfortable pairs of golf kicks we’ve ever tested. In fact, the phrase, “walking on newborn kittens” is as apt a descriptor as any. With that said, we’d like to get some feedback from MyGolfSpy readers. TESTERS WANTED We’re looking for four MyGolfSpy readers to tes...

Penfold Golf: History’s Great “What If?”

Chances are “Penfold Golf” doesn’t mean much to you. There is, however, compelling evidence to suggest it might be golf history’s great “what if?”. Today, Penfold is a fledgling lifestyle brand using nostalgia as its hook. But there was a time when Penfold was poised to be a golf ball powerhouse on both sides of the Atlantic. Based on what we’ve learned through some research, there’s a better-than-even chance Penfold could have become what Titleist is today. That is to say, the No. 1 ball in gol...

Four Testers Wanted – Sub70 949X Pro Hybrid

If you’re into following equipment trends, “better-player” hybrids are making a bit of a resurgence in 2021. The Distance Debate – How Age and Handicap Affect Distance

The story of distance at the amateur level is, surprise, surprise…for all intents and purposes unchanged since forever – or at least since people started caring about it. That fundamental fact is the rallying cry for amateur golfers every time the USGA, R&A, and anyone mentions anything about a distance rollback. Amateurs don’t hit the ball too far. They never have…and if you’re into death and taxes sort of guarantees, you can probably add “average golfers obsoleting anything longer than a pitch...

Four Testers Wanted – Nippon Regio Formula Driver Shafts

Raise your hand if you play Nippon Modus iron shafts. If that’s you, keep your hand in the air and consider that for golfers who find optimal performance with one of Nippon’s Modus Tour iron shafts, it also offers a commensurate driver (or fairway) shaft. For example, if you play the Modus Tour 105 or 125 series shafts, Nippon would suggest you look at the Regio Formula MB+. At face value, it’s a concept that seems to almost make too much sense. With that said, we’d like to get some feedback fro...

Four Testers Wanted – Motocaddy Electric Golf Cart

Inesis Golf and The Concept of “Fair” Pricing

Key Takeaways Inesis—the golf brand of sporting goods giant Decathlon—wants to define “fair” pricing for the golfer. The company says its Tour 900 urethane golf ball costs the same to produce as the ProV1, TP5 and others. At $29.99 per dozen, the price difference comes from streamlined production and eliminating “useless” costs. Inesis Golf isn’t the first company to offer the concept of “fair” pricing and it won’t be the last. But it is one of the few companies in golf that will tell you exa...

Best Driver To Fight A Hook 2021

A hook is often considered the “better player” miss but that is small consolation if you are watching the ball sail OB. While swing mechanics are always going to play the biggest role, modern driver designs can help keep the ball in play and in the fairway more often. Prescriptions for Fighting a Hook Unlike some of the drivers featured in the Best Driver For A Slice 2021 article, very few clubs these days are built with a fade bias locked in. Instead, the prescription for keeping the ball...

The Acushnet 2020 financial report is out and, in true Rocky Balboa fashion, the former champ has regained its crown. Acushnet is once again the king of golf. Acushnet is reporting 2020 net sales of $1.612 billion. While that’s down just more than four percent from 2019, it noses out Callaway’s 2020 net sales of $1.589 billion. That’s more of a split decision than a TKO but, hey, a win is a win. More importantly, Acushnet posted a $96-million net profit for 2020. That’s down nearly 21 percent fr...
