Boomer-ang

When I got back into film photography back at the end of 2013, it was mostly by accident; the result of buying a Leica R4 on a lark just because it was so cheap that I could afford what was once an unattainable object of desire just to put on my desk as a fidget spinner. Seriously, it was something like ninety bucks at KEH, a tenth of what it had cost new in the Eighties. Film cameras... even Leicas, other than the rarer variants of the classic M-series... had fallen into the Trough of No...

Size Matters

I was having lunch yesterday when the 1953 Chevrolet 210 two-door sedan rolled by again... I say "again", because I snagged a picture of this same car last November... Now, it's really not fair comparing the two photos directly. They were taken at about the same time of day and with similar lighting conditions, yes, but the older one was taken from further away and cropped out of a shot taken with the long kit zoom on a Nikon 1 J4 at an equivalent focal length of about 270mm. The n...

Midwest Industries Marlin 1895 Picatinny Scope Rail Review

Although known for their more modern firearm accessories, Midwest Industries also makes mounts for older guns like this Marlin 1895. IMG Jim Grant U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- Last year I was inspired to ditch my AR-15 for a Marlin 1895. See, I shot a mid-sized doe with an AR-15 firing a supersonic 300blk round designed specifically for that purpose; Problem is, even with a broadside angle on the deer and shot placement behind the shoulders, the doe still managed to run 60 yards before expiring. To...

Southern California students’ coronavirus artwork packs many emotions

They say art can express emotions, promote healing or offer a “window into the soul.” That also can be said of Southern California students who have illustrated the stress and constant changes of these pandemic times in their artwork. In February, Daniel Richter, a fourth-grade teacher in Wildomar in Riverside County, asked his students to express how they felt through digital art. Richter, who teaches at Sycamore Academy of Science and Cultural Arts — a charter arts school with campuses in Wild...

Analog v. Digital

No, I'm not talking about analog versus digital the way you think. In the Eighties, digital dashboards were all the rage in cars. In a Cadillac Allanté or Aston Martin Lagonda, the digital dash let you know it was sophisticated and modern. In a Chevy Corvette or Dodge Daytona Turbo Z, the digital dash let you know it was on the technological cutting edge and performance-oriented. In a Toyota Cressida or Subaru XT, the digital dash let you know it was Japanese. It was about this time that Mi...

Because I can't resist a dumb joke...

I ran both battery packs for the D1X through the full "refresh" cycle on the charger and took it down to the canal in Broad Ripple proper yesterday morning. It's pretty cool that it still runs like a top, since digital cameras are a lot more ephemeral by nature than a purely mechanical old film camera. The D1X debuted twenty years ago with serial number 5100000, and the serial on mine is just inside the first five hundred made, so it's probably seen some stuff in its day.The old 80-400mm f/4.5-5...

Vintage...

I had some issues today, trying to accept a challenge from longtime blog friend Gewehr98. He'd mentioned that an old Nikon D1X still took great photos, and wouldn't it be cool to take one out for a spin with a good fast zoom? Okay, the old Nikkor AF 35-70mm f/2.8 D is a fast zoom, and is about a 52-105mm equivalent on the crop sensor D1X, which is right in the range where I do most of my shooting. I mounted it on the D1X, popped a Peak Design Slide strap on it, and pedaled off to lunch... ...
