Leica Fable

Oh my lolz. So, Leica's ad agency in Brazil made a short video commercial touting Leica's past (its *distant* past) as the photojournalist's camera of choice*.Said commercial featured photogs running around in sweaty Banana Republic safari apparel, snapping those Decisive Moment shots. The final scene has a photojournalist poking the lens of his Leica R6 at a gap in some hotel room drapes in 1989 Beijing, and the camera zooms in to show the famous Tank Man photo reflected in the business end of h...

THROWBACK THURSDAY - THE LADDER DIARIES

With destination fly fishing and media, it seems that there are cycles where all you'll hear, read and see highlights a particular place and then it goes fairly quiet only to refresh sometime later with everyone going back to that place and again talking about it again.  After several years of only it only being a blip on the radar every now and again, Pyramid Lake with it's Lahontan Cutthroat are suddenly all over my social media feeds along with it showing up on various blogs and in videos.Cou...

Nikon Z6 first impressions

This was originally written and published for Photofocus. The article is republished here with search engines blocked and canonical set to the original published article. It is here for archival purposes and so my community can find it too. Before picking up the Nikon Z6, I had some doubts about the new Z system Nikon created. First and foremost is the elephant so obviously in the room. The single card slot that only accepts an XQD card, and soon a CFexpress card. Fortunately, CFexpress wi...

The Nikon Z6 Filmmaker’s Kit is the first camera rig to shoot 12-Bit RAW full frame video over HDMI

At least, it’ll shoot full frame 12-Bit RAW video when the new firmware comes out in a few weeks. The Z6 (and Z7, and a few of Nikon’s DSLRs) will also support CFexpress when the new firmware update comes, too. Not surprisingly, Nikon was showing off the new Z6 Filmmaker’s Kit at NAB 2019, so […] The post The Nikon Z6 Filmmaker’s Kit is the first camera rig to shoot 12-Bit RAW full frame video over HDMI appeared first on DIY Photography.

Panoramas, Memories, and a Young Person

A perfect spring day and just right for a little walk.   Still with the little camera. And I've just been told that a part is on order and it may be another three or four weeks before I get the Nikon back. But I'm discovering things about the little camera I hadn't known (I was on pain meds back when I first got the camera and couldn't really concentrate. Plus, if there was an owner's manual, I don't know where it is nor, indeed, if I ever saw it. A lot is hazy about ...

The Little Camera is Okay

The lens on my Nikon has some sort of problem and it (and the Nikon) are in for repair and cleaning. I looked for the little Sony CyberShot I had two plus years ago when I was in the slammer recovering from the catastrophe. I found it but, alas, the battery was dead and wouldn't charge. Oh no! And at the best time of year for pictures. My phone (only semi-smart) doesn't take very good pictures and I (not smart at all) don't know how to get them from the phone to my computer.  ...

Felicities of the Smartphone (Guest Post)

Words and pictures by Mark Power The TOP post from the other day, "The Most Amazing Thing About Photography Circa 2019," is a wonderful reflection on the growing acceptability of the cellphone camera. Mike's experiences with analog photography bought back a lot of memories because they exactly parallel my own experiences back in the day. Some time ago, I realized that everything I learned from doing analog photography has mostly disappeared from my conscious memory. A while ago, a student who h...

The Most Amazing Thing About Photography Circa 2019

Bob Gary was right in saying that the "Complexification" post the other day "hit a nerve." I think so too. The best thing I got out of the discussion was the "aside" in the Featured Comment by Dennis, who wrote: I know plenty of people who have turned away from entry level cameras (ILC or fixed lens) in favor of their phones, but I think that's due to the ease of sharing photos taken with a phone. As an aside, I truly believe that many people do not think that their phone is a 'good enough' cam...
