Deep impact: the underwater photographers bringing the ocean’s silent struggle to life

Kerim Sabuncuoğlu – just one winner in this year’s Ocean photography awards – tells the story behind his picture of a moray eel that also shows the wider perils of ‘ghost fishing’In July, off the Turkish port city of Bodrum, Kerim Sabuncuoğlu stepped from the edge of a boat into the azure Aegean Sea and began to descend. A scuba diver with more than 30 years’ experience, he took up underwater photography in 2002 and has since devoted considerable amounts of time and money to his “out-of-control ...

Apple brings macro, low light and cinema-focused updates to the iPhone 13 Pro camera

Apple continues its tradition of improving the photography capabilities of consumer devices with today’s announcement of the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro, available on September 24. Last year’s iPhone 12 had two rear camera lenses, while the iPhone 12 Pro had three; the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro follow suit. The iPhone 13 features a wide (f/1.6 aperture) and an ultra wide (f/2.4 aperture) lens, which are the same specs as the iPhone 12. But the iPhone 13 Pro unveils an entirely new camera system. Comp...

A ride to Strasburg to catch "Big Boy"

Sunday, September 6After lunch at Bob W's home, four of us got on our respective motorcycles/scooter to ride over to the vicinity of Strasburg and Byers, CO to see the Union Pacific's 4014 Steam Locomotive pass by on its way to Wyoming. Yep, it was Brigitta's turn for exercise (1987 R80 BMW) More info here on Big Boy: LINK, it's apparently one of very few remaining locomotives of it's era and size....1.2 million pounds in weight, impressive. After seeing the traffic debacle near Deer Trail, C...

Rangefinders

Unfortunately the Nikon S in the middle needs repairs, and the Minolta-35 in the background is probably uneconomically repairable. The camera in the foreground, though... The Zorki-6 seems to be in good working order. It uses the Leica 39mm thread mount, but it's unclear how well my Leitz 5cm Elmar will interface with the rangefinder cam on this crappy commie camera. When I have a couple bucks to spare, I'll get myself a Jupiter or something, I guess... . [Author: Tam]

Megadap’s new ETZ-11 autofocus adapter lets you put Sony E lenses on Nikon Z bodies

Give me steam!

If it weren't for the padawan's Oakleys and the telephone pole in the background, this shot could totally have been from the late 19th or early 20th Centuries. Except it was shot with a Nikon D3 and a 24-120mm f/4 VR lens rather than a period correct camera. I'm fascinated by this enormous twenty-eight horsepower behemoth... This was an attempt at giving a sort of "vintage color" feel to the scene... ...and here's my usual color and exposure calibration on the RAW file from the camera. ...

A weird potato-fish wins the 2021 Potato Photographer of the Year

When photographers call something “a potato,” that usually means it’s bad. Some would say it’s just Nikon, but I beg to differ. So when it comes to potato photography, is it something bad? Definitely not! The Potato Photographer of the Year confirms it and shares with us the best photos of its 2021 contest. Visual Reference

Here's a page with some cool animated gifs that illustrate very well the effect of various lighting sources on portraits, and the effect different focal lengths have on portraits. Nikon's page also has a neat tool... they call it a "lens simulator" ...for seeing how different focal lengths interact with differing sensor sizes. [Author: Tam]

Automotif CCXXXIX...

Yesterday morning, waiting to make the left turn off Crawfordsville Road to get into Marion County Fish & Game, I saw this thing coming toward toward me, cresting the bridge over Eagle Creek in the eastbound lanes. I had the top down on the Zed and a Nikon D200 wearing an old 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 AF sitting in the passenger seat. I managed to scoop it up and get it into action fast enough to get one good shot. I'm not any sort of knowledgeable on Chevy trucks in general, let alone early post...

Nikon P-223 3×32 Scope – A Budget ACOG? ~ VIDEO

U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- In life, you can never be too good looking, too rich or have too much ammunition – but you can definitely have too much magnification. Which seems counter-intuitive; how could making your target clearer and larger be bad? Ask any deer hunter how hard it is to find a target in a 12 power scope from a stand that’s starting to move. It’s like playing Where’s Waldo with your face six inches from the page – you might get lucky, but you’re more likely to get lost. The ...

Peer into the eyes of Cyberdog

When someone mentioned to me that Xiaomi was launching its own “robot dog,” my mind immediately went to Sony’s Aibo. And honestly, it would have been difficult to be more wrong. Now that the news has been out for a few days, the company’s heard all of your bad Black Mirror jokes, don’t worry. And, honestly, the Chinese hardware maker didn’t do itself any favors with the design here. Boston Dynamics has done a lot to imbue its quadrupedal robots with personality, through design language and viral...

Automotif CCXXXVII...

The Rolls Royce Wraith is a hard car to miss. It's two and a half tons of metal, leather, wilton wool, wood veneer, and twin-turbo V12. Over seventeen feet long, with a roofline most of five feet high, it's a coupe of near SUV-proportions. I was tooling down 54th to shoot the new Kimber test gun at Indy Arms Co. when I noticed this in the parking lot at the American Legion hall, so I swung in to get photos with the little Nikon D3000 in the passenger seat. A Look at the Latest Updates to Shooting Tethered: Part 2

This week I wrap up my look at what’s new in shooting tethered in Lightroom Classic, as well as some alternatives to consider depending on your needs and camera bodies. Be sure to check out last week’s post if you missed it. Shooting Tethered With the camera connected and the session started, its time to make some photographs. Clearly the main benefits of shooting tethered, whether you have live view or not, is to be able to see the photos on your much larger computer screen right after ...

360 Product Photography and 3D Photography: What’s the Difference?

Both 360 and 3D photography are meant to give an impression of a rotating object. In 360 photography, multiple pictures of the object are taken from different angles on a 360 photo turntable. A software program that comes with the equipment controls both the turntable and camera. In 3D photography, a product is pictured 360 degrees on multiple planes. In other words, the camera moves up and over the merchandise to capture a more comprehensive 360-degree view. This is helpful when you want to gi...

A Look at the Latest Updates to Shooting Tethered: Part 1

The June 2021 update to Lightroom Classic brought two changes to its tethering function, so I wanted to take a closer look at how those changes can impact a tethering workflow. In addition, I’ll share how you could utilize third-party solutions for tethering if the native functionality isn’t giving you what you want. [Editor’s note: This article originally appeared in the July issue of Photoshop User Magazine.] One thing I’ve found to be true across all areas of photography is that every d...

Returning From My Backpacking Trip

I’m happy to say that I survived my two-week trip to New Mexico’s backcountry at Philmont Scout Ranch. The boys did great, and I was so lucky to have an awesome team of adult advisors that worked well together and balanced each other’s strengths. As adults on this trip, we’re primarily there for the scout’s safety and to let them have the experience of completing the trek together. This is a lot harder than it seems as a parent, but it was good medicine for us as we learn how to let our kids go ...

Turbo Kitties!

A good camera and lens really makes a huge difference at the zoo. Even the "2x zoom" on most cell cameras is only about the equivalent of a 50mm lens on a full frame camera. The old style 80-400mm Nikon zoom I was using is available on the used market pretty cheaply for what it is, because it won't autofocus on D3xxx or D5xxx cameras that don't have internal focus motors. But that 400mm focal length will get you right in there with the critters. I thought about using a crop sensor body, ...

Difficult Shot

Shooting nickeled guns is hard. I mean firing them isn't any harder than blued guns, and the cleanup's easier, but shooting them with a camera is a pain. Here's the first try with the Model 59, from back when I first got it in October of 2019. I was using the EOS 40D with the EF 50mm f/1.4, shooting wide open like an idiot. That caused its own problem because the depth of field is so shallow with an aperture that big, even on an APS-C sensor. Notice how the hammer spur is out of focus?...
